Love of football kept Wyoming’s Brian Hill off mean streets (LV Review Journal)

Wyoming running back Brian Hill grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, which has long ranked among the world’s most dangerous cities with the highest murder rate in the United States at 101 per 100,000 residents.

To help keep her son out of trouble, Hill’s mother, Tamara Lewis, essentially paid him to play youth football, giving him five dollars for every touchdown and sack he produced.

“I was more focused on playing video games at that point in my life than going out and doing stuff, so she had to bribe me,” Hill said.

I hope that doesn't run afoul of the NCAA. Seems stupid, but you never know with them.

5 questions entering Saturday’s UNLV-Wyoming game (LV Review-Journal)

3. Will the Rebels be able to run the ball?

UNLV is 0-4 this season when it rushes for less than 200 yards and is facing a Wyoming team ranked 37th in the nation in rushing defense, allowing 138.4 yards per game. The Rebels are 19th in the country in rushing offense, averaging 236.2 ypg with 20 touchdowns. UNLV leading rusher Lexington Thomas (632 yards, eight touchdowns) has recovered from a high ankle sprain suffered against San Jose State and is slated to start, with capable true freshman Charles Williams (601 yards) backing him up. Fleet-footed Rebels quarterback Kurt Palandech also is always a threat to run.

UW must wait for bowl, but planning in works (WyoSports.net)

The only thing set in stone is the Las Vegas Bowl gets first pick of a MW team. Through the years, that team has been the conference champion if that team wasn’t selected for bigger bowl.

From there, the MW and ESPN Regional, which operates all of the MW bowls but the Arizona Bowl, gets together with MW Commissioner Craig Thompson to discuss who goes where.

“They go over what’s in the best interest of the Mountain West first, and attendance second,” Burman said. “Fans are relevant, but that’s only part of the discussion.”

Wyoming at UNLV football Q&A with Todd Dewey of the Las Vegas Review-Journal (WyoSports.net)

How do you see Saturday's game unfolding? What are you top keys and who wins?

UNLV might do a decent job of slowing Brian Hill, but it hasn't been able to defend the deep ball all season and I don't expect that to suddenly change on Saturday. Josh Allen should feast on the Rebels secondary, which is tied for last in the country in interceptions, with three, and is 92nd in passing yards allowed (253.6 ypg). Palandech could prove to be the X-factor in his first start, but with limited options at receiver, he won't do enough to pull off an upset. Wyoming wins by 17.

Behind Enemy Lines:

To build a winner at UNLV, Tony Sanchez can’t spit the bit (LV Review-Journal)

Bohl speaks the same sort of philosophy, about having a clear vision and that those coaches who compromise it because of outside pressures are only creating a recipe for disaster. He talks about having ducks in line and applying one’s resources to a timeline, and that you better have more than a handshake agreement from those above because there will be difficult times.

“I have a lot of friends that when it came to crunch time, they had to spit the bit and couldn’t do it,” Bohl said.

Kurt Palandech gets his chance at QB for UNLV (LV Review-Journal)

“I had my chances last year, occasionally, but I feel like this week is big,” Palandech said. “I’m excited to show I’m a much better player than last year and as a team we’re much better.

“I’ve got my chance now. This is what I’ve been waiting for, and I’m going to try to make the most of it.”

“Having the extra week will be huge going into this game,” he said. “I really feel 100 percent prepared going into this week.”

I haven't had my coffee yet this morning, and the way he failed to more easily say "broken tackles" makes me want to punch him in the face :coffee:

Maybe because a "juke" isn't a broken tackle but counts as a missed tackle forced??

Those are the types of stats you love to see from a linebacker. Guy's got the hands of a receiver too.

UNLV hosts hot Wyoming, a school with a plan that Rebels envy (LV Review-Journal)

“They just kept pounding away at the little things and following the plan. It’s the same thing here,” Sanchez said. “It’s pulling up your pants every single day and doing things the right way over and over and over. With that comes success.”

Sanchez also attributes the Cowboys’ breakthrough season to a hard-nosed mindset that “takes a minute” to develop. Bohl credits Wyoming’s physical play for forcing 19 turnovers (13 interceptions, six fumble recoveries), the 17th-highest total in the country.

“The offense is not just going to give it away. You need to have the attitude to take it away,” Bohl said. “That’s had a huge impact and is one of the reasons we are where we’re at, because of that (turnover) margin.”

UNLV vs. Wyoming: position-by-position breakdown (LV Review-Journal)

HANDICAPPER’S TAKE

Bruce Marshall (goldsheet.com): Wyoming 33 - UNLV 17 — After five straight wins and pointspread covers, do not expect any Wyoming letdown, as Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl knows a bit about keeping teams focused after his FCS power North Dakota State was 43-2 straight up between 2011-13. Much-improved quarterback play from Josh Allen is a major difference from Bohl’s first two Laramie editions. UNLV’s ambush chances are diminished, as Mountain West foes are figuring out the limitations of redshirt freshman Dalton Sneed and forced Tony Sanchez to make another quarterback switch to Kurt Palandech, not the sort of move a team usually makes in November unless things are going sideways.
