Compared to last year's UNLV matchup, only 10 who started last year are projected to start this week.

Offense (5): Hill, Maulhardt, Hollister, Roullier, Wallace
Defense (5): Wacha, May, Priester, Wingard, Epps

Allen said the 46-yard touchdown pass he threw to Gentry late in the first half of the Cowboys’ 52-28 win over Utah State moved to the top of his list. Allen scrambled to his left, and the right-hander threw a dart to Gentry who was able to drag his feet in bounds.

“That was a tough throw to make. Maybe nine times out of 10 I don’t make it, but it only needed to be made once,” Allen said.

Wyoming freshman Austin Conway getting more comfortable as traditional wide receiver (trib.com)

"Last Saturday was great, just another step for me," said Conway, who also returns punts for Wyoming. "I definitely proved that I could play receiver a little bit more, so like I said, as I continue to grow, I think I’ll continue to get more opportunities."

"I think the art of being a receiver is deception," Conway said. "You don’t ever want to be predictable. So making things look like, for instance, if I’m running a route, I definitely want to use my speed, so I want the defender to think I’m running them off or running a fly and then stopping right quick on a dime and running a different route. That’s as simple as creativity, using my assets that I have."

SORTING OUT COACH OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES

The Dash has reduced the field to a dandy dozen coaches who are doing the best work out there. The list, in alphabetical order:

Craig Bohl (13), Wyoming. The case for Bohl: After dominating the FCS level at North Dakota State, Bohl took over a program that was declining in the final years under Dave Christensen but hadn’t yet bottomed out. Rock bottom hit last year, when the Cowboys went 2-10 with losses to North Dakota, Eastern Michigan and Appalachian State. This year, Wyoming is 7-2, 5-0 in the Mountain West and in the Mountain Division driver’s seat after taking down Boise State. Last time Wyoming won more than eight games in a year was 20 years ago, when the coach was Joe Tiller.

Wyoming's Epps became a dad prior to Saturday’s game (WyoSports.net)

“Friday and Saturday, I was bouncing around from the hospital and (football meetings),” Epps said Monday. “It was definitely nerve-racking and exciting, but it was a great experience. There’s nothing like being a father.”

Nulph Column: Wyoming football won’t look ahead, but I will (WyoSports.net)

A UW win would set up an old-fashioned Western showdown between the Cowboys and Aztecs the following week in Laramie.

I just don’t see any way San Diego State loses this Saturday at Nevada, meaning both teams could walk into War Memorial Stadium 6-0 in MW play and possibly both be ranked as well.

It would be the next biggest home game in UW program history.

A win against the Aztecs would clinch the Mountain Division title for the Cowboys, as long as New Mexico loses at either Utah State or Colorado State.

Behind Enemy Lines:

5 players to watch in Saturday’s UNLV-Wyoming game (LV Review-Journal)

3. Kurt Palandech, QB, UNLV:

The junior almost helped the Rebels erase a 30-10 second-half deficit in their 30-24 loss Oct. 29 at San Jose State. He threw for a score and ran for a score in relief of ineffective starter Dalton Sneed before throwing an interception from the Spartans’ 44-yard line in the final minute. Palandech is 10-for-23 (43.5 percent) for 161 yards, a touchdown and an interception this season after completing 49.3 percent of his passes (75 of 152) for nine touchdowns and five interceptions last season. The fleet-footed Palandech ran for 293 yards and four scores last season.

Chavez Pownell and Tim Kamana step up for Wyoming defense in D.J. May's absence (trib.com)

"It was a humbling experience," Pownell said. "It was an experience to show everyone you never know. You never know when you’re going to (have to) do it. So, during the week, I never really practiced nickel like that, but at the end of the day, you have to be a football player, and you can’t let your team down."

"I was proud of the guys, the way they showed some growth and maturity and dealing with some adversity," Stanard said. "That shows us that we’re moving in the right direction."

In the Cowboys’ first six games they were 28 of 81 on third down, or 34.6 percent. In their last three games they were 28 of 45, 62.2 percent.

“Some of it is we’ve not been in as many un-makeable situations, and (redshirt sophomore quarterback) Josh Allen has made some plays,” third-year UW coach Craig Bohl said. We’ve protected him, and our receivers have made a ton of plays.”

UW’s Pownell demonstrates ‘next man up’ philosophy (WyoSports.net)

“Chavez is anxious to help the team any way he can,” Mallory said. “His opportunity came, he was excited and took advantage of it. He hustled around and made some plays.

“He’s had a great attitude all season. He hasn’t been hanging his head because he hasn’t been playing (on the defense). He’s trying to learn the defense better, and I’m proud of how he’s approached things. He’s accepted his role on special teams, and he comes to practice every day to get better. The Utah State game was a prime example of that.”

Behind Enemy Lines:

Wyoming’s breakthrough in coach’s third season gives UNLV hope (Las Vegas Sun)

“(Wyoming) just kept pounding away at the little things and following the plan, and that’s the same thing we’re doing here,” Sanchez said. “Getting the mindset of coming to work everyday in the weight room and coming to spring ball. It’s literally changing a culture and it takes a lot. Even if everyone has bought in it still takes time and this team coming in here is a great reflection of that.”

Love of football kept Wyoming’s Brian Hill off mean streets (LV Review Journal)

Wyoming running back Brian Hill grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, which has long ranked among the world’s most dangerous cities with the highest murder rate in the United States at 101 per 100,000 residents.

To help keep her son out of trouble, Hill’s mother, Tamara Lewis, essentially paid him to play youth football, giving him five dollars for every touchdown and sack he produced.

“I was more focused on playing video games at that point in my life than going out and doing stuff, so she had to bribe me,” Hill said.

COLUMN: Throwing on the run not new for Allen (WyoSports.net)

“I’m definitely comfortable doing that, if need be,” Allen said. “I want to win no matter what, and I try to put team in the best situation possible. If that means making a crazy throw and trusting a teammate to make a play, so be it.”

“I’ve learned what throws to make and what throws not to make, and when to take risks and when not to,” Allen said. “That’s part of getting game reps and trusting receivers to make a play.”
