Gagliardi column: Seniors leave lasting legacy for UW football (WyoSports.net)

“It’s always dangerous to start separating senior classes because there were some guys from the previous senior classes that we’ve had (at UW) which I personally will always be indebted to,” third-year coach Craig Bohl said.

“There’s more of a connection with this class. Those legacies they have left as far as how they prepare, how they encourage, how they demand excellence of themselves will have a long-lasting impact on other players. There’s not very many of them, but they’re dudes, and they’ve had a big impact.”

Behind Enemy Lines:

Aztecs can expect chilly reception in Laramie (SD Union-Tribune)

“Going into the wind you have to throw control passes,” Long said. “Going with the wind, that’s where the bombs come out. But if you’re a quarterback who practices up there all the time, you, obviously, have an advantage over a quarterback that doesn’t practice up there all the time.”

SDSU quarterback Christian Chapman, as well as his teammates, is expected to ignore the elements.

“I’m not even actually allowed to say that word, the ‘W’ word,” Chapman said. “Not even at practice. I can’t say it or I have to do pushups. So it’s not going to be a factor at all.”

Wyoming football faces one of nation's top defenses in San Diego State's 3-3-5 (trib.com)

"(It's) a little bit unique," Wyoming (7-3, 5-1) head coach Craig Bohl said. "In some principles, it’s a three-down (defense), but they’re very aggressive. They bring a lot of different angle pressures that can cause some chaos for an offensive line coach and the rest of the scheme.

"We’re going to need to be on point and beyond just running all that stuff, they have really good players doing it, and they play really fast and very aggressive, so sometimes if a guy’s not exactly in the right spot, he’s going a 100 miles an hour. It becomes very disruptive. I think they’re an excellent defense."

Wyoming vs. San Diego State football Q&A with Kirk Kenney of the San Diego Union-Tribune (WyoSports.net)

What are your keys to Saturday's game at Wyoming, and who wins?

First off, I'm predicting a lower score than Wyoming's game last week against UNLV. These teams mirror each other in that both would prefer to keep the ball on the ground, control the clock and keep the other team's offense off the field. San Diego State has done a good job of containing the other team's running game, aided by the fact that most of its opponents have fallen behind early and needed to throw the ball to get back in the game. Also, the Aztecs led the nation in turnover margin last season and are in the top five again this year in that category. Creating more turnovers than the other team is a pretty good predictor of success. As for a winner, the Aztecs have won 17 straight games against conference opponents. I'll stick with them until someone can prove otherwise.

UW offense to be tested by San Diego State’s unique defensive scheme (WyoSports.net)

Long has run that defense in his 17 years as a college coach, and also in stints as a college defensive coordinator.

“They play relentless, and you can see it’s like there’s blood in the water and they’re the sharks out there,” third-year UW coach Craig Bohl said in describing San Diego State’s defense.

“Their scheme is very organized, and they’re disruptive. It’s a gap-cancelling defense, and they’ve got great athletes out there executing it.”

Behind Enemy Lines:

5 things to watch; SDSU vs. Wyoming (SD Union-Tribune)

1. This is a big one

Sure, it can be said that every conference game is meaningful, but with the Aztecs having wrapped up early a second straight MW West Division title and a spot in the league’s championship game, they now have their sights on bigger things: playing the Dec. 3 title contest at home and possibly securing a New Years Six bowl berth.

Wyoming is just as motivated. The Cowboys are tied atop the Mountain Division with Boise State and New Mexico. They hold the advantage over the Broncos because they beat them, but still have a matchup next week at the Lobos in the regular-season finale.

Wyoming football senior class sees payoff in final season after years of losing (trib.com)

"It’s been awesome," said Gentry, a wide receiver. "We’ve had a lot of tough times, us as seniors. We went through a lot of losses. A lot of struggles. But it’s been fun to succeed this year and get a taste of it."

"I think that the senior day is going to be kind of in the back seat, because this is the biggest game I’ve played in since I’ve been here," said Maulhardt, a wide receiver. "I mean, there’s so many implications that go with this game in trying to get to a Mountain West championship, and this game has more meaning than any game I’ve ever played in.

Seniors Kinder, Martin play key roles in Wyoming's success (WyoSports.net)

“I don’t think I would have changed this for anything,” Martin said. “Everything I’ve been through here at Wyoming has been big in shaping me as a person.”

“It might sound crazy to say, but those guys bring just as much value as a starter,” Cooper said. “They help prepare those starters. It’s important to get that kind of investment from kids — young and old.

“When the young kids, like guys we are redshirting right now, see the kind of work and effort guys like (Kinder and Martin) give, they see why you bust your butt in everything you do and eventually it will pay off.”

Pumphrey, SDSU running game shines as offensive line does ground work (WyoSports.net)

“We know each other well, and the cohesiveness we have is something special,” said senior left tackle Kwayde Miller, who has started 24 games and played in 27 in his career.

“Last year’s group was special because we won a conference title. This one is even more special because four of us are seniors, and we just have a lot of fun with everything we do.”

WYO-SDSU: Three keys to the game (WyoSports.net)

1. OFFENSE IS THE BEST DEFENSE

Wyoming faces one of the nation’s best defenses today. During the past 17 MW games, SDSU has allowed an average of about 10 points per game. Still, the Cowboys must find a way to win the time-of-possession battle, finish drives with points and, most importantly, keep its defense fresh so it’s not on the field for 97 plays like it was last week at UNLV.

Wyoming senior center Chase Roullier prepared to excel in multiple career paths (trib.com)

As a junior, Roullier was graded as the top offensive guard in the country by Pro Football Focus. He was also named to the Mountain West Academic All-Conference team for the third straight year.

"I don’t know how he does it," quarterback Josh Allen said. "He misses some of our team meetings because he’s in labs. Trust me, I couldn’t do it. His class load is insane, and it takes a special guy to do that.

"And he is a special guy."

Wyoming football defeats No. 24 San Diego State on thwarted 2-point conversion attempt (trib.com)

“It shows a lot of resolve and belief, and we talked about that at the pregame meal,” Bohl said. “To believe in one another, believe what the coaches are coaching you to do, trust your teammates and play with confidence.”

“Our confidence starts with the guys up front,” Bohl said. “It also starts with the trigger guy. Josh Allen’s really a guy that can make some good decisive plays in those situations, and we’ve got a good tailback.”

Behind Enemy Lines:

Aztecs lose thriller in Wyoming, 34-33 (SD Union-Tribune)

The impact of the loss is that the Aztecs now have little chance of hosting the MW title game after beating Air Force at Qualcomm Stadium last year.

D.J. Pumphrey, meantime, may have lost a possible seat at the Heisman Trophy ceremony. The nation’s leading rusher, with nine straight 100-yard games going into Wyoming, was held to 76 yards on 17 carries, though he did lead the Aztecs in receiving (five for 52).

“I think we’re all very, very disappointed right now because we didn’t win the game, and we’re kind of used to winning games,” Long said. “But we’re going to play in the championship game, which means we have a chance to win the conference, which is our main goal.
