Sports Illustrated: 10 best games of the 2016 college football season

Every college football season has its moments. The ones that leave fans glued to the television screen and shake up everything we thought we knew. The ones that we’ll remember long after the season has ended. The ones that will help get us through the long off-season.

Sometimes the stakes are high. Other times, it’s just an incredible back-and-forth game with a wild finish. And occasionally both come together for a truly memorable performance. After 16 weeks of drama, here are the games that have stuck with us the most. We looked back over the entire season to pick the 10 greatest games of the year.

Kevin's Commentary: Wyoming's History with BYU (gowyo.com)

Like everyone I have my favorite BYU-Wyoming games. Most of the old-timers would say the Pokes 1981 victory in a War Memorial Stadium blizzard was their most memorable. Or the first night game in War Memorial history to start the ’88 season. Both were tremendously memorable, I agree. The Pokes rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat BYU and two-time All-American quarterback Jim McMahon, 33-20 in the ’81 snowstorm. And the ’88 team steamrolled the Cougars under the lights, 24-14.

Wyoming football reaps national recognition after division-championship season (trib.com)

"It’s very exciting," Roullier said. "I got a lot of people reaching out and talking to me and stuff, so it’s fun kind of reconnecting with some of those people that I haven’t talked to in a while. It’s exciting for me and my family and all my coaches I’ve had in the past as well. That’s a testament to those guys. So it’s very exciting.

"I think they’re very deserving," offensive coordinator Brent Vigen said. "When you get national honors out of a Group of Five school, you deserve it. Those honors aren’t just free flowing to Group of Five schools. Chase, I think, has put together a real great season but moreover a body of work over the last three seasons, probably last two in particular, to take notice.

Wyoming’s 34–33 survival combined the palpitations of the two-minute drill, the unease of a long replay review and a predictably freezing night in Big Sky country. It was also the night that probably knocked San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey—the second-leading career rusher in NCAA history—out of the Heisman Trophy running as he only mustered 76 yards on 17 carries.

Are you effing kidding me. God damn east coast writers. Big Sky is Montana you moron.

Q. You saw San Diego State a couple times. Any similarities between their tact and preparing for BYU. You played San Diego State a couple times and you find a bowl game in San Diego?

COACH BOHL: I can tell you this, there is no better spot to play a bowl game than San Diego. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I had an opportunity to be here in San Diego at a bowl game when I was a younger coach. Coach Long and I are great friends. They play, I don't want to say traditional football, but it looks like football. When you look at BYU, we certainly see a lot of similarities. BYU is very disciplined as I said, but they're very pointed, very focused. Everything that they have within their arsenal, there is a reason for it.

Brendan Turelli: A pizza party and practice (WyoSports.net)

Even with the busy schedule, a few of us took some time out to honor a self-proclaimed weapon to the team, Drew Van Maanen. Dec. 14 is his birthday, he wanted to celebrate as only a fullback would; we had a pizza party. This pizza party featured guest appearances from offensive tackle Ryan Cummings (who wanted fans to know he will be ready to go for next year after a season-ending foot injury), impact defensive lineman Conner Cain, jump-ball threat and wide receiver Jake Maulhardt, receiving fullback Jordan Ellis, All-Mountain West tight end Jake Hollister, the human bulldozer — fullback Matt List — and of course Drew and myself.

Maluia made most of 1st career start, looks forward to 2nd for Cowboys (WyoSports.net)

“The Cowboy Walk was when I definitely was the most nervous,” Maluia said.

“But once I got out there and got my feet wet a little bit, I was in the game,” Maluia added.

“On a big stage like that, it wasn’t like he was intimidated,” third-year coach Craig Bohl said. “He made some plays. He was assignment sound. He’s a strong, physical guy, and we’re really pleased with him being able to go out and play that well.”

COLLEGE PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS WEEK

Wyoming QB Josh Allen (vs. BYU, Poinsettia Bowl, Wednesday, ESPN, 9 p.m. ET): Plenty of people have wondered, since North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz went second overall last spring, where to look for the next under-the-radar quarterback prospect. So it’s at least interesting that the place might be one that the man who recruited Wentz to Fargo—Wyoming coach Craig Bohl—calls home.

“He’s a big ol’ kid with a big arm, and he’s pretty athletic too,” said one AFC exec. “We gotta learn more about him, but the tools are there.” Allen is still seen as fairly raw, and the finish to his season was far from perfect, but he’s working in a pro-style offense and, as a redshirt sophomore, has plenty of time to grow.

UW fullbacks all about fun — and improvement (WyoSports.net)

“Winning changes everything,” Ellis said. “Losing the Mountain West Championship Game (27-24 at home to San Diego State on Dec. 3) was very disappointing. We didn’t play to our potential — at least that’s the way some of us looked at it.

“But we still have something left. We’re not just going to show up to the bowl game. We’re coming to play.”

Tough schedule

According to the NCAA, UW played the 18th-toughest schedule in the country this season. It also was the toughest in the MW, and for any Group of 5 team.

Turelli ‘s take: ‘If you want to go to heaven first you have to die’ (WyoSports.net)

I would like to crown a practice Most Valuable Player. Ever since the very clear All-Conference snub, sophomore safety Marcus Epps has been playing with his hair on fire waiting for this game. In Thursday’s practice, Epps had three interceptions and countless sacks, tackles for loss and tackles — further proving that more than just his wonderful baby boy should be calling him Dad. :thumb:

Injured Wyoming seniors Chase Appleby and D.J. May share sideline view together (trib.com)

“Me and D.J. are close,” Appleby said. “I think D.J. being around is nice, instead of me standing there alone. I hate to see what happened to D.J. happen, but it makes it kind of easier to have a guy who’s a great football player as well kind of be with you. It’ll be cool. It’ll definitely keep the time rolling while we’re down there.

“With D.J., you never know what we’re going to get into.”

BYU in no hurry to return to Mountain West (WyoSports.net)

Wyoming hasn’t played BYU or Utah since the split in any of the three sports.

That appears to be fine with Wyoming fans.

A current WyoSports poll asks if fans would like to see Wyoming return to playing BYU and Utah on a regular nonconference basis.

Of the 772 votes cast, 300 voted for “absolutely not.”

TURELLI'S TAKE: Time to head to San Diego (WyoSports.net)

Redshirt freshman linebacker Logan Wilson, a Wyoming kid from Casper, continued to show why he has earned the nickname “The Governor.” He brings the same intensity to practice as he does to games. A kid we are lucky to have who is showing some leadership traits at a young age.
