Wyoming vs. SDSU

Shepard, Chol, and Spencer are all seniors and all they're good at is being big thugs. Spencer and Chol combined for 2 points last night. Not exactly world beaters. And half of you are acting like Shepard is the second coming of Lebron out there and he's a schmuck. He was the most athletically gifted player on the floor and only dominated on the defensive end against a white kid from Wyoming who had 1 division 1 offer while he was a top 100 national recruit. On the offensive end he had 14 points on 14 shot attempts. As much as he touched the ball he should've dropped 25 or 30 last night. He's a prime example of a guy who has not improved as a basketball player under Steve Fischer. :twocents:

Not sure who you are talking to about Shepard being Lebron. I haven't seen anyone say that. From a couple of your posts now though that I have read you are claiming that Steve Fischer isn't a good coach is that right?

I saw a couple of posts about how Shepard was dominating on both ends of the court. You must have missed that. And I don't think Steve is all he's chalked up to be, especially at this point in his career. Spencer, and Dakari Allen were all top 150 recruits. Chol, Kell, Shepard, Cheatham, and Hemsely were all top 100 recruits. Malik Pope was a top 20 recruits. The only team out West that has this much talent is Arizona and look at their success. What has he ever done with this? This team should be a top 15 team in the nation and they'll be lucky if they get anything higher than a 9 seed. Larry Shyatt won the Mountain West tournament with a bunch of kids nobody wanted. Steve Fischer has a team of all stars and can't get out of the first weekend.

Okay just checking. I personally think Fischer is a good coach and has built a great program. I'm not sure Shyatt would do any better than Fischer. I would like to think he could and I think Shyatt's in game coaching is very good and he is good at adjustments just not sure he would do any better than Fischer has done.

SDSU was terrible before Fischer built that program up and Fischer is responsible for recruiting those kids there so you have to give him credit for that and if they make the NCAA tournament it will be the 7th straight year they have made it. I would love for Wyoming to ever be able to get to that point.

Last time we were even close to that was when Brandy took us to 3 NCAA tournaments in the 80's and it still isn't close to 7 in a row.

I'd also add on that Fischer's teams play D. Pretty much every year we face them its in your face, athletic defense that defines SDSU. They always will hold us to low scores and we have to be able to do the same to them in order to hang. Their athleticism compared to ours this year is probably an 8-10 point gap that we'd have to overcome just on boards, paint ownage, and their ability to lock us down. Fischer's offense hasn't been great really but there is something to be said about getting hardcore athletes to play hardcore defense. He's a good enough coach to establish an identity for a team and an identity is how you win.

It's all about making progress and moving forward and I don't know if he has done that recently. From last night, I don't know how much coaching he really did. Their entire offense was 1vs1 iso with either Shepard or Cheatham and let them use their superior size and athletic ability to either get a basket or let Spencer or Chol move bodies for an offensive board. While that may work against inferior talent of the Mountain West, you see the shortcomings when they get on a national scene.

Cosmic, I will also agree that his defense has always been great, but look who he trotted out as starters last night. Kell, Shepard, Cheatham, Spencer, and Pope. That is a starting lineup that is 6'4", 6'8", 6'9", 6'10", and 6'10". I would hope you could play some killer defense when you have size and length like that.

In all, I do have a decent amount of respect for them as they are a good team with really good talent, but that team has a ceiling that is much higher than its floor and they're playing nowhere close to it. He has built a team that can dominate Mountain West competition but consistently lacks on a national stage.

Well he can recruit too! That's as big a part of the game as any. Granted he gets to recruit to San Diego which is so easy breezy. I think you have a valid point. Yes I do think Shy would do more with that squad and if that was my team I'd be annoyed as shit watching 1 v 1 Mcclain style offense. Flip side to that is Mccain's teams didn't play defense like that consistently for that many years straight and Mcclain's offense was probably worse then SDSU, I'd be happy this year if our D was our identity (which is what we're supposed to pride on). I think we have to give Fischer his due. It's college ball and to be consistently in the top 100 with a team identity is solid coaching in my book. Yes a lot of these coaches do get to coast because of great recruits. I've seen it with even the likes of coach K having better coaching years then others, I've seen Lute Olson teams not utilizing there potential live in the tourney because of lackadaisical in game coaching, etc. Truth is though we'd wish we could be one of those teams that is a perennial tourney team or close. Would we like to be more Izzoish, or like some programs that really have athletes well coached? FUCK YES! Truth is that is really only about 50-75 programs like that in the country, maybe less....

Missed free throws, SDSU shooting well above their average, and turnovers were the story of this game. Which one or two of those would be enough to doom us so the fact that we had all three I am surprised the game was as close as it was.

Really looked like SDSU decided to make sure McM didn't beat them. They knew Josh was going to get his but made sure JMAC didn't have any room to get a shot off. Then once he started getting shots he was rushed and never looked comfortable. Good defensive plan by SDSU.

IMO, this is spot on. I'll give Steve Fisher & staff credit for a well thought out game plan in which he evidently watched film, decided if he shut McManomen down and held Adams somewhat under control, and then practiced that - they could win. I think we could have gotten the win by making half of our missed free throws and only turning the ball over half as much as we did.

Oh one more thing I just thought of after some wine. Steve's SDSU program is probably much dirtier then Shy's UW one. Just seems that way after there was an investigation with them. I think we're lucky we run such a clean program with pretty high quality individuals as players. I know we have lots of struggles but our kids seem intelligent and look like hard workers. Good qualities to have and we don't have big loose money getting thrown at dudes, hookers, investigations or insanely low graduation rates. Those are quality human traits while running a program. Maybe players should get paid something but that's a argument for a different thread.
