Wyoming displays physical toughness in victory over Nevada

“Herndon gave us some special minutes," Shyatt said. "This morning at 9 a.m., we found out he had strep throat. Thank God we got him to a doctor, we got him some antibiotics in him, and they said by four o’clock he wouldn’t be contagious. Let’s hope they’re right.”

“I think this was Derek [Cooke]’s best game as a Cowboy from start to finish at both ends of the floor. The only disappointment is he made four out of five free throws, so I know I’m going to hear about that tomorrow,” Shyatt said, referencing'

“When we can have these guys knocking in a few shots and pull those guards back, it frees us up in the post to move around more,” Nance said. “It’s awesome to see them hit some shots. Hopefully, they can keep it up.”

“We’re in a good spot,” Grabau said. “Not too high and not too low is the biggest thing for us as a team. Play each game as if it’s your last. Play hard, play smart and play together.”

Cowboys show toughness, intellect in win over Nevada

“We’ve played a lot of close games,” (Shyatt) said. (UW is 9-2 this season in games decided by single digits.) “We’ve made good decisions, and I’ve seen some of the bad ones we’ve made. But I think a cerebral team, a mentally tough team, a team that knows how to get the ball to the right people at the right times counts, too. A level of tough intellect will defeat talent anytime talent doesn’t show.”

CSU, Wyoming have a lot on line in Border War

This isn’t just any game, as third-year coach Larry Eustachy acknowledged before the two teams met for the first time this season.

“There’s a real rivalry among the Wyomingian and the Coloradoan, and it doesn’t have anything to do with basketball,” Eustachy said “… It’s kind of a culture divide in some people’s minds, so it makes it fun when you compete at anything.”

CSU brings in second-best rebounding team in MW (WyoSports.net)

They really go get it,” UW coach Larry Shyatt said. “It doesn’t matter what game, what time of what game, they go get the ball.”

Junior guard Josh Adams said, “It is nice coming off a good rebounding game against Nevada, which was a good offensive rebounding team. Hopefully we can carry over that mental focus Wednesday.”

“The only difference is Colorado State crashed (the boards) hard from the guard spot,” he said. “So all five of us will have to be on edge — not just the guys down low.”

College Basketball Talk: D’Angelo Russell, Jahlil Okafor among the nation’s ten most entertaining players (Rob Dauster)

7. Larry Nance Jr., Wyoming: The son of a dunk champion, it should come as no surprise that Nance is a high-flier. But he’s more than just the dunks, as he has three-point range and is one of the best defensive power forwards in the country. He’s one of the biggest reasons that Wyoming is calling themselves the new Dunk City.

HOME GROWN
Torrington native Jason McManamen fulfills dream at Wyoming

Jason McManamen is right where he belongs.

It's 2:31 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, and McManamen -- a 6-foot-5, 195-pound redshirt sophomore with short blond hair -- stands in front of a basket inside the Arena-Auditorium, firing mid-range jumpers. He wears a white tank top, white shorts, high white socks and bright gold shoes.

No Mountain West team has ever won the league when suffering two home losses in a season and the Cowboys already have one. Can CSU give them their second?

Robert Gagliardi, Sports Editor of WyoSports.net and the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, chatted with me today to get my thoughts in a Q&A. Here’s what I had to say.

Q: How do you see this game unfolding, and who ultimately wins?

I picked CSU last time because the game was at Moby Arena and how did that turn out? Given this game is up at the Arena-Auditorium, I have to give the edge to Wyoming (don’t worry, CSU fans, I’m always wrong on these things).

Granted, CSU had a cold-shooting night back on Jan. 7 and will likely have more of a hot hand Wednesday, I feel the Cowboys are the best team the Rams have played on the road this season, even if RPI favors Boise State. It’s going to be a hostile environment. If CSU can escape with a win, it will be a season-defining performance.

Handling the environment, better shooting keys for CSU basketball at Wyoming

First, the Rams have to successfully handle the adversity at what's sure to be a raucous 'Dome of Doom.' Calls won't go their way, and the crowd will try its best to get under the Rams' skin. Whether they let that affect their play, Eustachy said, will go a long way in determining the outcome.

"We know stuff's not going to go our way," he said. "That's just what it's going to be. The noise, the things being said, that's going to be the key, to handle the hostile environment."
