Wyoming's Nance experiences swing of emotions before finishing on top

LARAMIE -- Before the free throw, the steal or the dunk, Larry Nance Jr. was out of sorts.

Wyoming's senior forward, also the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year, didn't always look like it during the first half of his team's 63-62 victory on Saturday. The long, athletic New Mexico Lobos forced him to the perimeter and out of the paint, where the 6-foot-8 forward prefers to make his living. He twice was called for offensive fouls, barreling over defenders in a determined siege of the rim.

In the opening 20 minutes, Nance attempted just two shots and scored four forgettable points.

Tom Kensler: It's always defense first for Wyoming basketball (Denver Post)

LARAMIE — Larry Nance Jr.'s father was named to the NBA's all-defensive first team in 1989, but Wyoming's standout senior forward jokes that he must not have inherited that strain of genes as he played "little to no" defense in high school.

So imagine Nance's reaction when, before one of his first practices after moving from Akron, Ohio, to Laramie, Cowboys coach Larry Shyatt informed the team that the day's drills would be devoted to defensive fundamentals.

Players would not touch a basketball during the entire two-hour practice.

"That's crazy," Nance recalled. "It was the most bizarre thing us freshmen had ever done. A basketball practice without a basketball? But obviously what Coach Shyatt does works. We have a winning culture here."

Lobos fall at Wyoming in OT

“We told them not to allow a 3 and not to foul on a 3, and we fouled them,” UNM coach Craig Neal said. “They made them all.”

“On that last possession, they were told in the huddle to call a timeout (if Wyoming made the free throw), and they didn’t call it,” Neal said of his team. “And I’m yelling to call it. I don’t get the timeout, but we still get the ball in bounds. We get it to the guy we want to shoot the free throws and for some reason he didn’t hold it to get fouled with five seconds. It’s one of those deals.”

“Yeah, we got a road split, but we’re here to win,” Neal said. “We’re here to win championships. We’re not here for splits. Happiness isn’t splits. I’m not happy about it. … We played well enough to win that game. To just give it to them. … They had two great players who made two great plays. Adams made a heck of a play and Nance made a heck of a play. Our guys didn’t make plays.”

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming 63, New Mexico 62 (OT)

COWBOY CROWD

Wyoming packed 10,167 fans inside the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday, its largest crowd since Feb. 3, 2001. It was the 74th time more than 10,000 fans filled the Arena-Auditorium all-time.

Their presence would not go unnoticed.

"I thought they were great," Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said, pausing for a second to gather his emotions. "I've been hoping for that for a long time. I said last week, 'I really feel hurt, because I love these guys and I love their approach and I love the way they play.'

I wish I knew what I was missing here. Are the attendance numbers wrong on their yearly stat documents? Because they've had about 10 crowds that size since that date.

I'm a big numbers/research guy, so this inaccuracy is bugging the crap out of me!

Is there some confusion between 10k and "near capacity"?

Maybe someone said it's the first time since 2001 we came within 1k of a sellout or something like that when the capacity was bigger

I was wondering that myself, that maybe the tweet was referring to percent capacity.

However, that February 3 game the attendance on the stat sheet is listed as 10,191.

Since that date:
February 10, 2001: 15,456
February 15, 2001: 16,488
January 12, 2002: 13,183
January 26, 2002: 12,254
February 16, 2002: 13,301
January 18, 2003: 11,242
January 20, 2003: 11,029
February 8, 2003: 15,418
February 22, 2003: 15,039
March 1, 2003: 12,863
January 15, 2005: 10,336

Those games should have still been at a higher percent capacity, should they not?

Yeah when they were saying that it was the largest crowd since clear back then I knew it sounded wrong but I just hadn't taken the time to look it up. Good investigative work. Wonder who decided to print that in the newspaper.

UW-New Mexico notebook: Cowboys keep breaking streaks (WyoSports.net)

Free throws

This was the first time since the 2000-01 season that UW has won consecutive overtime games, and also played two overtime games in a row. ... UW's 16 points in the paint Saturday are a season low. ... The game featured 12 ties as five lead changes. ... The Cowboys held the Lobos to 20 points in the first half, which is the 12th time they've done that in a half this season. ... Coaches and staff of both teams wore sneakers as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer's Suits and Sneakers Week. .... Former UW player Bill Garnett (1979-82) was honored at halftime. ... Nance played in his 112th game, which is tied for 18th at UW.

SLAM DUNK FINISH! UW rallies late for OT win over New Mexico (WyoSports.net)

“I saw (Greenwood) looking down court, so I started sneaking up,” said Nance, who had a team-high 23 points. “Luckily, he threw it. I poked (the ball) out, saved it to (senior guard Charles Hankerson Jr.), stood under the basket and Riley found me with an outstanding pass.

“It was such a swing of emotions for me. I went within seconds from missing a game-tying free throw to getting the game-winning steal and game-winning layup. My head was going a thousand different ways. I’m just so glad those guys came up with the ball and found me.”

I sent the Assistant Sports Information Director who is the primary contact for men's basketball. Here was his response:

Thanks for reaching out. You are absolutely correct. Last night’s crowd was the largest since 2005, not 2001. I simply did not research that stat correctly in the heat of the moment. Thanks for helping make sure I’m correct!
