Vorel: Wyoming fans would be wise to appreciate Cowboys' current magic

This is a team worth rooting for.

The spectacle, however, won't last forever. Those five seniors -- Nance, Grabau, Cooke, Hankerson and Jack Bentz -- have just five more regular season games inside the Arena-Auditorium.

Then, they're gone forever, never to be seen again in a Wyoming uniform.

"Those seniors aren't going to be around [much longer]," Shyatt said after Saturday's victory over New Mexico. "The sand's coming out of the bottle, and you only get five more looks."

Gagliardi column: Cowboys must keep on shooting (WyoSports.net)

It’s not what the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team is built around, and isn’t what it does best.

But the Cowboys’ 63-62 overtime win over New Mexico on Saturday at the Arena-Auditorium featured a lot of odd twists and turns, there was something they did – at least at times – that will serve them well the rest of the season: Making 3-pointers.

UW-Utah State Q&A with Shawn Harrison of the Logan Herald Journal

With no returning starters and not a lot of proven experience returning from last season, Utah State has proven to be one of the more solid teams in the Mountain West this season. Have you been surprised by the Aggies' play to this point?

The start of the season certainly was a surprise. To not only start 3-0, but be down by double digits in each of those games and then win shocked me. Veteran Aggie teams have not done that. So, I think the way this team started made me think they could come together and play as a team sooner than most thought. When Mountain West play rolled around, the win at Boise State was big. Utah State has been in every game and could just as easy be 7-0. Realistically, youthful mistakes cost them against New Mexico and UNLV.

Experienced Cowboys learn to deal with distractions, outside noise on road

The Crowd

It took a while for Larry Nance Jr. to focus on defeating five players, rather than 15,000.

“Freshman year, I remember walking into every gym -- The Pit, or San Diego State, even CSU -- and just being amazed," Wyoming's senior forward recalled. "I had never played in front of crowds like that. I had never even seen crowds like that."

The more he played, though, the more Nance was able to mute outside distractions. The intimidating glow gradually faded away.

Logan Herald Journal: Little time for Aggies to dwell on loss to UNLV

With the top team in the Mountain West Conference paying Utah State a visit tonight, the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum should be rockin.

Aggie men’s basketball head coach Stew Morrill certainly hopes so. USU can use all the help it can get against Wyoming.

“I hope our crowd understands that this is a team that has been in the Top 25 and has been getting a lot of votes, still at this point, and could very well be in the Top 25,” Morrill said during a press conference Monday. “These are the games that everybody wanted in the Mountain West Conference, so here they are. Let’s rally.

“The home courts you find in this league are exceptional, and when ours is at its best, it’s exceptional. We need it at its best over the remainder of our home games in league play.”

Said Shyatt, “If this was a (UW) ball club that had struggled or played differently on the road than they did at home, then perhaps I would have those types of lingering feelings.

“But I don’t feel that way about this team. They’ve won some good ball games on the road.”

“There’s a different feel, a different pressure,” UW senior guard Riley Grabau said. “There are things you have to do to keep that spot. We have a target on our back, and that’s what we’ve wanted since day one.

“It’s a good pressure, and it really elevates this team to what we can succeed with this season. I love having a target on our back and everyone trying to beat you.”

UW-Nevada men's basketball Q&A with Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette-Journal (WyoSports.net)

At 6-13 overall, 2-5 in the Mountain West and losers of five straight, what has been the biggest issues for Nevada's struggles of late and much of the season?

Offense. This team simply can’t score. Getting to 60 points is a big achievement. The Wolf Pack was ranked last in the nation in 3-point shooting for most of January, but has perked up a little there in recent games. The team struggles with turnovers and has missed a lot of point-blank shots, leaving little margin for error in order to get wins. The defense, a big strength in nonconference action, has slid in a major way in Mountain West play. So, in short, other than rebounding, Nevada doesn’t have a lot of strengths to draw from and usually linger around 35 percent shooting from the floor, which makes it tough to win at any level.

Mike Vorel: Nance, Cowboys prepare for challenge of keeping Nevada's West off the glass (Trib.com)

“Their toughness, their competitiveness and their ability to not only hurt you in transition but hurt you on the glass is big," Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said. "This guy’s [West] got more offensive rebounds than our team. So that’s a startling statistic and one he should be proud of."

But in fairness to the Cowboys, West out-rebounds just about everybody he faces. The 6-foot-9, 235-pound junior has 110 offensive rebounds this season, more than any other player in the country.

Despite five-game skid, Carter confident Wolf Pack will keep fighting

"They're very disciplined," Carter said. "They will not shoot early in the shot clock. They'll take an easy basket early in the shot clock if it's there. But they usually let 25-30 seconds run off. You cannot speed this team up. If you try and press them, you'll get tired and they'll eventually wear you down."

"If we don't execute on offense and we turn the ball over, it's going to be a long night," Carter said. "And we have to rebound the ball. That's something we've been doing really well. That's our strength. We have to continue to do that and we have to be very, very disciplined in defense. They're going to run things over and over and over again and we can't break down."

Cowboys look to bounce back at home against Nevada (WyoSports.net)

“We know what we’re capable of and know what we’ve been doing all year, so there is no reason to make any drastic changes,” said junior guard Josh Adams, who is coming off one of his worst games of the season with two points and six turnovers at Utah State.

“Just like a game has a series of runs, a season does as well, with its share of ups and downs. How you respond to those ups and downs determines what kind of team you are.”
