Gagliardi column: UW men’s hoops should have big crowd Saturday

Fifth, and what should be the most important reason, UW is good. This is a team competing for an MW title and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since the 2001-02 season. It has the best player in the league in senior forward Larry Nance Jr., and it has a nice mix of experience and youth.

Let me get this straight, not that long ago, people like Beav wanted Sellers to go because they thought he was a waste of a scholly. Now, when he does decide to go, he gets criticized for it? The fuck do you want from him? To go to the local bar, knock someone to the ground, and kick their face in to get kicked off the team?
The problem is that the scholarship is and has been unavailable for the year. If he was going to quit, would have been much better to do so over the summer so we could have used the scholarship. Now it sits wasted.

I didnt want him gone. I thought he could contribute and give DC and Nance breaks. Even if i did want him gone I would have wanted it before the season so we could have had a replacement. Not with 12 games left of your senior year.

Talk about a real waste of a scholly.
And you're assuming he had nothing else going on in his personal life that would have come up recently.
I am not assuming anything of the sort. Just pointing out the difference in quitting last summer versus now.

Wyoming hoops looks to defeat New Mexico, snap streak

“Me, Riley [Grabau], Jack [Bentz], Josh [Adams], DC [Derek Cooke Jr.] -- the older guys all know what we’ve gone through with New Mexico," senior forward Larry Nance Jr. said. "Last year, two overtime games, and they just beat us by a couple points both times. Credit to them. They’re a good team.

"But this is definitely something that we really want to get. I think this year is our best chance to do it with a veteran group.”

"They went from having one 20-point scorer to having four or five 10-point scorers. They’re just more of a team now," Nance said. "Neal has done a good job of ingraining that in them, that, ‘Hey, we don’t have any superstars this year, but we’re going to make sure we still keep our winning culture.’”

TOSS UP: Is Larry Nance Jr. the Mountain West Player of the Year?

Larry Nance Jr. is averaging 16.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and has the Cowboys at the top of the league standings. Sports director Ross Jacobson and beat writer Mike Vorel discuss whether Nance is the Mountain West Player of the Year at this point in the season.

Stevens: Lobos Need To Be Defensive At Wyoming (GoLobos.com)

“It’s a tough place to play,” said Lobo Coach Craig Neal, probably referring both to the Arena-Auditorium and also to Laramie. The Lobos had to play a late game Wednesday night in Las Vegas and then Saturday’s game at Wyoming was moved from the evening into a 2 p.m., start.

“It’s always a challenge when you go to Laramie,” said Neal. “It’s always a fight because his (Coach Shyatt) teams play great defense and they value possessions. We’ll have to go up there and play our best basketball. They limit possessions by the pace they play on offense and how they guard you.

Cowboys look to snap losing skid against Lobos today (WyoSports.net)

“It’s definitely been talked about,” UW senior forward Larry Nance Jr. said of the team’s losing streak to New Mexico. “That’s motivation behind this game.”

“They are managing who they have, they are playing 11 guys, they focused more early on defense and now it’s really paid dividends,” UW coach Larry Shyatt said. “They are the finest defensive team, they and San Diego State, in this league.”

“When we’ve played them in the past, we were more worried about a couple of different guys, but now this is a more complete team,” Nance said. “There may not be any superstars, but they’re more rounded.

Albuquerque Journal: Lobos seek road win, but pressure is all on favored Cowboys today in Wyoming (Geoff Grammer)

The Cowboys (16-3, 5-1 MWC) are out to prove they aren’t paper tigers and legitimate championship contenders. And a win today would go a long way in keeping them in that discussion.

There is plenty of reason for the buzz around this program. However, there is also no denying its nonconference schedule was weak (but they were hardly the only ones in the league with such issues).

Wyoming staves off knockout blows to defeat New Mexico in overtime

"It's not over 'till it's over," Nance said afterwards with a disbelieving grin.

"It doesn't get written about, and it never gets put on ESPN. Made free throws," Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said. "These guys have made big free throws all year, and Josh did it again. That's not easy when there's a lot of people watching."

"Any other group I've been with in 40 years, you could see it in their body language or their face [when they're trailing]," Shyatt said. "Not these guys."
