Transfer players allow Mountain West powers to reload, not rebuild

Out with the old.

In with the not-so-new.

Throughout the Mountain West Conference, programs are rapidly reloading, cushioning the loss of proven contributors with the addition of transfer players who will be counted on to provide an immediate punch.

Cowboys basketball begins prep work for Sunday’s season-opener (WyoSports.net)

The defense is solid, but the offense needs to improve.

That’s what University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach Larry Shyatt said Monday as his team prepares to host Northern Colorado in its season-opener at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Cowboys held their second and final closed scrimmage of the preseason last Saturday against Division II Metro State in Laramie. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from talking about the specifics of those scrimmages, and schools are not allowed to release box scores.

Nulph column: New digs, new buzz for UW hoops teams

To say this has been an unusual preseason for the University of Wyoming men’s and women’s basketball programs might be the biggest understatement of the year.

Both teams have had to deal with plenty of question marks and uncertainty on and off the court.

— How will Larry Nance Jr. return from the knee injury he suffered in February?

— Can the Cowboys pick up right where they left off when Nance was injured?

— Can the Cowgirls coaching staff get the team’s young and talented post players ready for the speed and physicality of Division I basketball?

— Can the UW women score enough to make up for potential defensive lapses?

Charles Hankerson Jr. (WyoSports)

Wyoming senior guard Charles Hankerson Jr. talks about coming back this season after being suspended near the end of last season for a violation of team rules.

What a great interview with Hankerson. He seems to have grown up a lot in a short amount of time and has a new perspective on basketball and life a little bit. I have all the respect in the world for him right now. He made a mistake, paid for it and is moving on. Or as he put it, he made his bed, now he has to lay in it. It would be easy to quit after losing a scholarship, but he stuck around and is paying his way because he thinks Wyoming is a special place and that this team could be special. Good for you, junior! I for one am rooting for you to have a great individual season and to help the Pokes have some team success. I am glad he is on this team and think he can really help us in a number of different ways.

Gay team success? Lol

I'm impressed with him as well. Took a lot to swallow his pride, pay his way and still be a huge part of this team. Quite the walk on.

DEDICATION AND THE DUNKS
Wyoming guard Adams out to prove he's more than just an athlete

Inside the walls of a gym in Parker, Colorado, time doesn't exist.

It's a hot, sunny summer day, and Josh Adams has been here for hours. Or days. Or weeks. At this point, who knows?

Wyoming's 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior guard is lost in his routine. He starts 15 feet from the basket, and sinks 20 jumpers from seven different spots. Then he steps back to the three-point line, and sinks 20 more jumpers from seven more spots.

Dribble. Swish. Dribble. Swish.

Around him, people shuffle in and out, partaking in one-on-one games or heaving wild halfcourt shots. He doesn't see them. They don't exist.

Pokes Open Renovated Arena-Auditorium on Sunday Versus Bears
Phase I of the Building's Renovation is Complete

The wait is over. University of Wyoming fans have their first chance to see the renovated Arena-Auditorium on Sunday when the Cowboys open the 2014-15 season by hosting Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. MT.

Affectionately known as the Dome of the Doom, the Arena-Auditorium closed its doors on March 10 and underwent the first phase of a $30 million renovation over the summer and fall. Phase I created new spaces for the Cowboy and Cowgirl locker rooms, as well as new strength and conditioning, sports medicine and visiting locker room areas. The court was reoriented 35 degrees to provide additional practice space and is now the Maury Brown Court thanks to his generous donation. Renovations in fan amenities included all new theater-style seating in the lower bowl, which features padded chair-back seats, and two new video boards.

CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS
Six Wyoming seniors hope to leave legacy of chemistry, wins

It started with three.

When Larry Shyatt returned to Laramie for his second stint as Wyoming's head basketball coach in 2011, the program lay in tatters, marred by two consecutive 10-win seasons that prompted the firing of fourth-year head coach Heath Schroyer.

What kind of recruit would commit to Wyoming, considering the shaky foundation?

Enter Larry Nance Jr., Riley Grabau and Jack Bentz.

“These three guys, they took a chance," Shyatt said. "They took a chance on Wyoming. They took a chance on us three and a half years ago. We were not at a place we were proud to be at that point."

Vorel: Wyoming hoops should aim for conference title in 2014-15

This is it.

For years, the Wyoming Cowboys have been scrappy underdogs, hard-working afterthoughts and the executor of an occasional upset followed by an immediate return to obscurity.

Never a powerhouse. Never a conference favorite.

Until now?

It's not a familiar role for the Cowboys, but Larry Shyatt's team looks poised to play it. Wyoming returns four starters from last season, including 6-foot-8 forward Larry Nance Jr., arguably the most talented player to grace the program in the last decade, and 84 percent of last year's scoring.

HIS FATHER'S SON
After recovery from torn ACL, Wyoming's Nance ready for special senior season

Larry Nance Jr. is his father's son.

On a basketball court, the similarities are eerie. The lanky, gracefully athletic Nances dunk alike, their long arms tomahawking basketballs over helpless defenders. Their post moves are effortless -- ducking through crowds before exploding skyward, hanging in the air and releasing soft, arcing jumpers.

During Nance's freshman season at Wyoming in 2011-12, he would call home to rehash each game with his father, a 13-season NBA alum.

"You looked just like your dad," his mother would tell him.
