Kevin's Commentary: Arena-Auditorium Memories

"I remember Fennis Dembo sitting on the rim after Wyoming's victory over Clemson that sent the team to New York for the NIT Final Four. I smile when I think of Marcus Bailey hitting two free throws to beat Utah for the Western Athletic Conference title in front of the largest crowd ever to see a game in the building (over 16,000). Who could forget Justyna Podziemska banking in a shot against Kansas State to send the game into overtime and an eventual victory in the semifinal game of the Women's NIT, which Wyoming won. That tournament would arguably be the greatest stretch of games in the building's history."

Gagliardi analysis: Plenty to watch as Cowboys basketball opens season today

Basketball season is here, and the University of Wyoming men get it started at 2 p.m. today against Northern Colorado at the newly renovated Arena-Auditorium.

Since the end of last season, fans have wanted to know two things: what the new A-A looks like and how senior forward Larry Nance Jr. will play after having the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee surgically repaired back in early March.

Brandenburg returns for opening of renovated Arena-Auditorium (WyoSports.net)

Today, the University of Wyoming unveils its newly renovated basketball facility — the Arena-Auditorium.

So, it’s fitting the school brought back the man who played a big role in getting that arena built, and who coached the Cowboys in that first game Feb. 20, 1982.

Jim Brandenburg, who turns 79 Dec. 10, will be on the bench with current coach Larry Shyatt and the Cowboys when they host Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. today.

Brandenburg coached the Cowboys from 1979-87, when he went 176-97. UW won three Western Athletic Conference regular-season titles with Brandenburg, and one WAC Tournament title. Brandenburg led UW to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 1987. His 1985-86 squad finished runner-up in the NIT.

“It’s going to be extremely physical and games with this team always are tough,” coach Larry Shyatt said. “They have some older guys, they are fearless and this will be a good opening test by a good opponent.”

“It’s very overdue,” Nance said of this season-opener. “This has a very different feel than any other opener I’ve played in. It’s been more than eight months since my last game. I can’t wait. I feel great, the knee feels great.”

Wyoming hopes defensive effort yields victory against Northern Colorado

"At least at this point against Utah and Metro [State], I thought our defensive rebounding and grabs on the defensive end were improved," Shyatt said. "I felt very comfortable with how we played defense throughout both scrimmages."

Shyatt went as far as to call Wyoming a "solid" defensive team, which is high praise coming from a coach that eats, breathes and consumes defensive basketball.

Solid.

Wyoming's Nance enjoys triumphant return in season-opening win

Larry Nance Jr. was done waiting.

After 270 days away from the game, Wyoming's 6-foot-8 senior forward missed his first three shots in Wyoming's 78-70 victory over Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon. In the refurbished Arena-Auditorium's debut, the Cowboys were losing. Unbridled enthusiasm had given way to an anxious silence.

But with 7 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the first half, Nance took a pass in the post, turned and released a virtually unguardable sky hook. The shot arced over the rim, hung in the air for a second, then dropped soundlessly through the cylinder.

Yes. Finally.

Wyoming christens renovated Arena-Auditorium with a win

On Sunday afternoon, 5,876 people experienced something for the first time.

When the Wyoming Cowboys huddled near their bench for the pregame introductions inside the renovated Arena-Auditorium, the lights dimmed and the crowd reacted.

"Welcome to the Dome of Doom," a gravelly voice boomed.

The pregame pump-up video streamed on two massive video boards, and the sound of thunderous alley oops were pumped through the arena out of brand-new speakers.

But while highlight reels are typical, no one expected the fire.

Nulph column: A start Nance, Cowboys can work with

The surgeons and doctors assured Larry Nance Jr. nine months ago that surgery to repair his right anterior cruciate ligament would return the Cowboys senior to full health.

But when an elite athlete suffers a major injury like an ACL tear, it’s not the physical part that’s the toughest to overcome. It’s the mental aspect of the return to the floor that can sometimes haunt a player.

Were the nine months of work and sweat and tears and doubt enough?

Can I still do the things I did before the injury?

What happens after that first awkward fall?

Cowboys basketball plays two games in three days

Larry Shyatt had a reason for having two games over a three-day stretch four times during the nonconference portion of the schedule.

The University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach said if his team wants to achieve one of its top goals — playing in the NCAA Tournament — it will have to play two games in three days (assuming his team won that first game).

The first of those four times is tonight as the Cowboys (1-0) host Division II Western State Colorado University (1-1) at 7 at the Arena-Auditorium. UW won its season-opener 78-70 over Northern Colorado in Laramie on Sunday.
