Vorel: UW opener introduced fans to new-look Cowboys

The arena wasn't the only unfamiliar thing for Wyoming basketball fans in the Cowboys' season-opening 78-70 victory over Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon.

Glance down Wyoming's roster, and many names are the same.

Nance. Grabau. Cooke. Adams. Hankerson.

But make no mistake, this was a different group of Cowboys.

Cowboys basketball clamps down on defense, spreads wealth offensively (WyoSports.net)

The University of Wyoming basketball team didn’t want to send Division II Western State to the free-throw line because the Mountaineers went to the line nearly 70 times in their first two games.

Mission accomplished, as the Mountaineers got to the line three times.

But that left them with some open 3-point shots.

The Mountaineers made 10 3-pointers in the game, but just seven 2-pointers.

Gagliardi column: Rare opportunity for UW fans Saturday

If you’re a University of Wyoming sports fan, it’s going to be tough to top Saturday.

The men’s basketball and football teams play a day-night doubleheader with the men hosting Colorado at 4 p.m. and football taking on visiting Boise State at 8:15 p.m.

For many fans, who decide whether they come to games based on the opponents UW plays in either sport, there isn’t much debate this time.

This will be the 12th football-basketball twinbill UW has hosted since 2003. Half of the time, the basketball portions have been exhibitions. But when they have been regular season contests, the most marquee team UW brought was Boise State — when it was a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

CU basketball: Buffs' Collier aiming to debut against Wyoming (BuffZone.com)

Taking a break

This is the fourth consecutive year that CU has faced Wyoming, and Saturday's game will complete a four-game series the schools agreed to in 2010. There are no plans in place to play in the future.

"This will be the last game for a while," Boyle said. "That's not to say we'll never play again; we just won't jump right back into it."

Boyle likes to schedule regional matchups, but said, "We need to get a little different flavor.

"We've started playing Northern Colorado now and there's a possibility we could get something started with (Denver). We're not going to play all those schools (in the same season)."

CU and Wyoming first played on Jan. 14, 1908, and the Cowboys lead the all-time series 42-36.

Well crap. Hopefully the rest of the team can pull it off.
They've been doing fine without those two so far. We'll only get better when they can get back on the court.

CU basketball: Buffs face tough test at Wyoming
Cowboys' deliberate pace will challenge CU

During his time in Boulder, Colorado men's basketball coach Tad Boyle has learned that facing Wyoming isn't enjoyable.

"Playing them is like going to the dentist; it's not a lot of fun, you don't look forward to it," Boyle said earlier this week.

On Saturday, Boyle will take his Buffaloes (2-0) to Laramie, Wyo., for a battle with the Cowboys (2-0).

So far, Boyle has had a tough time against coach Larry Shyatt and the Cowboys, going 1-2 against them, including a 76-69 loss at Arena-Auditorium - known as the "Dome of Doom" - two years ago.
