Notes and Quotes: Wyoming hoops enters second preseason scrimmage

STARTER SCRIMMAGE

Though the two teams used much of the scrimmage for situational work, Shyatt said Wyoming and Utah matched its starters and top subs against each other for one 16-minute segment.

And though he couldn't say who won, Shyatt smiled and said he was "extremely pleased" with the Cowboys' performance.

#50. Larry Nance, Jr - Wyoming Cowboys
- 15.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 2.1 bpg

- Nance, who is entering his senior campaign with the Cowboys, will be the key to Wyoming's success this season. If Nance can play at the level he did last season, then Wyoming could surprise some people in the Mountain West this year.

Wyoming: Assuming Larry Nance Jr. is healthy, the Cowboys are a legitimate contender in the Mountain West Conference.

This program doesn't have the cache or brand power of other schools in their league like UNLV, San Diego State or New Mexico but that doesn't mean it's not capable of finishing at the top of the conference standings.

Larry Shyatt's squad was on a complete upward trajectory last year after it beat the Aztecs in Laramie and was 17-9 overall and 8-5 in league play when Nance went down with a torn ACL.

If he returns close to the same form he showed last year -- 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds prior to injury -- and Josh Adams and Riley Grabau continue to blossom as quality secondary options, Wyoming should have all the requisites for a breakthrough season.

Another thing to like about this squad?

Experience. The Cowboys will have seven juniors and seniors on their roster, giving it the type of seasoning it will potentially need against younger in-league competition.

Allen Edwards: "If you can remember from our first year of being here, we were one of the best teams in the country at taking charges." Solid Xs and Os talk here.

He's a physically mature kid for sure. Doesn't look like most of the freshmen we've seen here that need to spend time in the weight room.

Bleacher Report: 20 Players Every College Basketball Fan Must Watch in 2014-15 Season

Larry Nance Jr., Wyoming
hi-res-ae857d292ebdf3666f9f0f3786479fbe_crop_north.jpg

Position: Forward

Year: Senior

Height, weight: 6'8", 235 lbs

When Larry Nance Jr. went down with a knee injury last February, it more or less killed Wyoming's season. The Cowboys lost six of seven after losing Nance, losing in the first round of the Mountain West tournament and the College Basketball Invitational.

Given a clean bill of health in October, Nance has been tabbed as the conference's preseason player of the year. He was a first-team all-Mountain West choice in 2013-14 despite missing the final month because he's been averaging 15.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He was eighth in the country in defense rebounds at 7.27 per game.

First TV appearance: Dec. 5 at SMU; 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

Barnes definitely passes the eye test. I think Williams does, too. Tyrell's body-type kind of reminds me of a young Reginald Slater right now. If Nance/Cooke/Sellers/Herndon could hold the fort at the 4/5 this season with no injuries, I'd love to see Barnes and Williams redshirt. Probably won't happen, but that extra year would do wonders for them (and the program), physically and mentally.

Happy birthday to my bro young Al aka baby Wilt. It's been a pleasure watching this guy grow. I remember telling him it's only a matter of time until he's the face of the program and that time isn't too far away. I can't wait to see what the future holds in store for you, it'll be a blessing for sure. Enjoy your day and I wish you many many more! #twintowers #skinnybutwinning
