UW shows improvement after second scrimmage (WyoSports.net)

University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach Larry Shyatt had four words to describe his team’s second scrimmage of fall practice last weekend.

“It was much better,” he said, compared to the first one the week before.

The Cowboys scrimmaged for about 24 minutes, divided into four six-minute periods. He said the focal points were communication, improvement getting out on shooters and drivers, and blocking out on rebounds.

“I thought all three were improved, if not improved dramatically,” Shyatt said. “And we actually shot the ball well. We had something like 24 assists on 30 made baskets.”

That is seriously our strongest looking big man I've seen at UW since Uche! If he plays like Uche I'm going to be extremely excited!

And he's still a pup. Give him a few more years growing in height, working on the weights, and honing his skills and he's going to be a scary sight for the opposing teams.

As mentioned before, just look at the development of Nance from his freshman year to Jr/Sr. -- both physically and fundamentally -- under this staff. A very noticeable transformation. I would hope and expect as much with Barnes (and Williams, too). Barnes is already a physical specimen. When I watched him in the Colorado all-star game, he moved well and looked to already have a nice little jump hook. As he polishes up that little offensive move under the staff, he'll be hard to defend. Here's hoping that both he and Williams can be defensive cornerstones and monsters on the boards for Coach Shy in the near future.

Definitely excited to have legitimate freshman prospects in the front court that can play behind established starters and develop for a year before stepping in and being multi-year contributors. Ideal program development if it works out. Williams listed height is one of the more "optimistic" measurements I have seen in recent years, though. Must have included the hair. ;)

Even though this is a big year for the Pokes, I think you will see 3 true freshman make the rotation. With Washington's injury, it opens up a backcourt opportunity for Lieberman to play right away and I think we will need both Barnes and Williams for depth in the frontcourt. Maybe even Gorski too, although I would think McManamen would be the more likely choice as spot up shooter off the bench this year.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming hoops prepares for Utah scrimmage

Eighteen days.

In less than three weeks, the Wyoming men's basketball team launches the 2014-15 season, unveils the renovated Arena-Auditorium and debuts Larry Nance Jr. 2.0.

Until all of that happens, though, here's a few notes and quotes to whet your appetite.

SCRIMMAGE NO. 2

Wyoming had its second scrimmage of the preseason last weekend, and head coach Larry Shyatt was pleased with the results. The Cowboys played four six-minute quarters, followed by work on underneath out of bounds passes.

Following the first scrimmage, Shyatt was looking for the Cowboys to make strides in their on-court communication, defensive closeouts and blocking out around the rim.

Check. Check. Check.

Wyoming's Cooke hopes improved conditioning leads to stellar senior season

Derek Cooke Jr. was built for the sprint, not the marathon.

Since he arrived in Laramie prior to the 2012-13 season, the wiry 6-foot-9 forward has been explosive -- in spurts. One moment, he'd be the fastest player on the floor -- first to the ball, first to the basket, first to stick his head and gravity-defying puffs of black hair above the rim on a dunk.

The next moment, he'd be exhausted. Done. Cooked.

“When I get tired, my fatigue just kind of gets the best of me," Cooke said. "Coach [Larry] Shyatt always says, ‘The first thing the fatigue hits is your mind.’”

Shyatt compared Cooke to one of his former players at Florida, Joakim Noah, who would exert absolutely everything he had for several minutes at a time, then crash.

Nance at #66 in ESPN's Top 100 College Players:

[tweet]https://twitter.com/MW_MHoops/status/527834906949214208[/tweet]

"Cowboys coach Larry Shyatt largely eschews offensive rebounds by design -- Wyoming ranked dead last in college hoops in offensive rebounding rate last season. In other words, don't blame Nance for the only noteworthy flaw on his scouting report. He's great at everything else."

Calling Nance's rebounding ability a flaw is reasonably dumb - even after they point out that we don't go after offensive rebounds. The fact that 1) we play at a slow pace, and 2) we don't pursue offensive rebounds, tells me that Nance's 8 rebounds/game average is pretty solid.

I also think it's dumb that Winston Shepard is ranked higher than Nance. They point out that he's a frontcourt player that only shoots 42% from 2-point range, yet he's one of the best players in the country. I think his ranking has a lot more to do with the name on the front of his jersey than his actual ability.

That leads me to question how good SDSU is really going to be this year. Who is going to score for them? Thames was their only offensive threat last year, and they would have lost a lot of games if he weren't in the lineup. In fact, SDSU's biggest strength was offensive rebounding, and they needed it. Nobody on that team can hit a shot. I expect Polee to pick up some scoring for them this year, but who else is going to help? Polee is no Thames or Franklin.

SDSU is going to play good defense and they'll hit the glass hard. I'm not saying the team is void of talent, but I honestly think that Wyoming has a better starting lineup than SDSU. I'm certainly biased, but I honestly believe that the best 3 teams in the conference are Wyoming, Boise State, and actually Fresno State. Boise may even drop off with the loss of Ryan Watkins. That kid could rebound, and they'll miss him a lot this year.
