We have a new President

PokeOLoco

Well-known member
Laurie Nichols VP of academic affairs at SD State.

Not terrible for athletics, they have invested a lot of money in a new football stadium and have pumped money into a pretty good basketball program. Plus it's way colder in that shithole of a town (Brookings) than Laramie so she won't mind that.

Honestly, I don't know much about her or her philosophies. I have some reading to do.

Here's wishing her nothing but success!!!

Yeah don't know much about her beyond what I mentioned. Hopefully she'll be the stabilizing leader we need who can make be proactive.

Funny, but I cannot find anything about this women's family anywhere....odd.

UPDATE: Yes I can, it's contained here: http://www.statealum.com/s/1108/index.aspx?sid=1108&gid=1&pgid=1327&cid=1647&ecid=1647&ciid=3137&crid=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On paper, looks like a solid hire. She will have her work cut out for her over the next few years in a time of decreased mineral revenues and decreased budgets. Best of luck to her!

Pretty big jump: From a VICE president of ONE part of a LESSER (IMHO) school than Wyoming.

As the VP, she was the head of her department. She was also the Provost, making her #2 in the hierarchy at SDSU.

Maybe she won't stach her family in Ft. Collins and commute to work twice a week like Strenberg. I just pray that she likes athletics

Well if you are looking at this hire from an athletic standpoint I don't think it is a very good one but of course they don't hire presidents at Universities because of athletics. Guess we should never judge a book by its cover though and take a wait and see approach. Was hoping for the Texas Tech guy.

Looks like she is mainly concerned with academics. She got her masters from Colorado St. and her PHD from Ohio St. We could hope that because she went to Ohio St. she might understand the importance of athletics but then again my sister is a graduate of The Ohio St. University and she doesn't give a crap about athletics so this lady might be the same way.

Hope and pray that isn't the case but we may have to rely on the coaches and AD we have right now for athletics which in most areas might not sound like a good idea. Please let her care about athletics.

Good god, I hope so.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much. All university presidents care about athletics in two ways, and in this order: 1) they want it run cleanly, with no NCAA rule-type or other kinds of scandals; and 2) acceptable success by the teams.

Leaving aside that the first is just the right way to run things, when both exist, a president has just one less distraction from her actual job, which is managing, creating and setting a course to ensure a healthy, good university.

After Sternberg, looks like a Stenberg....wow. Looks to me like a pure Academic rooting, I wonder what this lady will bring to the table in terms of Poke Athletics. I'm not initially encouraged, however political motivations will be revealed in time, and we'll see how the BOT and this selection plays out in the near term. I guess we have to give her a shot. Shit.

She said she's a Ram through and through. See 04:39 on her interview video...

What the hell is up with that? Who is in charge of hiring for this position and who does this lady think she is that she can think it is okay to say she is a Ram through and through at her Wyoming speech?

Is anyone else okay with this?

Does she really have any brains if she says something like that?

Why? Why would anyone in their right mind even THINK of saying that in their interview? Like going to Alabama and saying that they're an Auburn fan through and through! Yeah, we're more civil about it then those yucks, but still! It's stupid!
If there was one way to lose a lot of support in a few words, that would be at or near the top of the list!

I didn't care that she went to CSU, but what the fuck was that? Sternberg without the ambition. FAIL. The BOT is flushing our beloved institution down the toilet.

Could have at least hired someone who had participated in varsity sports. There must be dozens of them.

I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt but after hearing her say that for a Wyoming interview or speech or whatever it was it just blows my mind that someone would do that. Can't believe they would hire someone that would even say that out loud like that into a microphone at a public event.

Well, at best its bad optics on the part of the BOT, at worst, they're simply tone deaf and/ or disengaged and not terribly interested.

I haven't seen the interviews from the other candidates, but she was boat-raced by at least one of the other CV's. Can't say her interview really overcomes her own ho-hum CV.

It will definitely be interesting to see how she meshes with Mead.

Said it before and I'll say it again, until the BOT are accountable, we're mired in mediocrity and lack of real vision.

This is the biggest issue facing a successful UW.
