UW vs. Nevada

I'm surprised to see so many posters predicting such a precipitous drop in our conference record after a single loss on the road. This season hasn't really produced any results that I would call surprising. My expectations for this team really haven't changed much at all from the start of the season. I still think we end up winning more games in the conference this year than we did in either of Shyatt's first 2 seasons. I'd predict 8-10 at the moment.

The frustrating part has been that we haven't been able to pull out the win in any of the games that are toss ups (@DU, SMU, @Nevada). Those were all games that I thought we had a legitimate chance of winning heading into the game, but we just weren't able to quite get there. Hopefully we can begin to win similar games as the season progresses. Right now, I would consider Utah State at the AA and on the road at Air Force to be good examples of games that could swing either way.

I'm not going to predict we beat New Mexico on Wednesday night, but it is certainly not a guaranteed New Mexico win. If you're thinking about not tuning in for the game, I'd advise otherwise.

Your surprised? What year under Shyatt has proved we will be anywhere close to .500 in conf? Now this year we go and start out with a loss to one of the two teams in conf with a losing record! Well, that does not promote confidence now does it? Just looks like same ol same ol to me, maybe worse.

We went 9-5 in his first year/tenure and 6-8 in his 2nd (1st year of 2nd tenure), before going 4-12 last year.

Really? Our conference record from 15 years ago? You really think that will hold water on this topic? So far he is 10-20! That is all that matters. And from where I'm sitting, it looks like we're getting progressively worse. 6-8; 4-12; 5-13 (maybe?). The percentage seems to be on the downward trend.
I really hope I'm wrong! I will eat all these words if I am.
But most of us get our hopes up when we win the majority of our games against a bunch of nobodies. 9-4 to start conference. We had a good showing in Colorado, a decent showing at OSU, overall as a team we looked pathetic against Denver (Nance is the only one to show up in that one), and we played pretty bad as a team and yet lost close to SMU. Did we beat anyone with a pulse? Oh wait, I guess there was Ark St. With their over inflated 9-4 record. Kind of like ours because they beat a bunch of nobodies! Who else? Mont. St. With their 7-6 record. Northern Colo? Their 8-3 record.
We are currently 6-2 against teams with losing records right now, a combined record of 39-74. That is not good.
Black Hills St. We played pathetic!!! Did you know that we (the D1 school) counted that as a real game, but they considered it an exhibition!
Western St. By far the worst team that we've played and will play all year. Currently at 0-12, we beat them 69-52. Their D has been giving up an avg of almost 90 ppg. We managed to play them at home and come away with the LOWEST score that they've held anyone to!!! D1, D2, D3, NAIA, it doesn't matter, other teams will scored 80 to well over 100 on these guys. We hit 69... (We're second lowest if you count their exhibition to Northern New Mexico St!)
The point is, if we went 4-12 with the likes of Leonard Washington and Gillmore, this team is going nowhere... And it shows.
Because now we have conf games, and because of our "success" against a bunch of nobodies, your feeling like we have the potential to make some noise, only to be disappointed by the end results.

Shyatt needs to tell these guys to quit player so unselfish and shoot it when you have an open look. As many have pointed out, why wait until the close runs down and forces us to shot an bad shoot....just shoot when you have an open shot. The last 4 or 5 shots by Nance were all forced. Pass it out when you get in trouble Larry. I realize you're the best player on the team, but you took some bad shots late in the game yesterday. And both Granberry and Hankerson need to be more aggressive as well.

Shitty outcome to start the season...but at least we didn't lose at home like UNLV.

ps. Shyatt has missed on some recruits and started with a bare cupboard. The good news is the last recruiting class is more of what we need to push the program forward.

He didn't start with a bare cupboard and I don't know where you see anything from the last class that indicates an improvement. Lieberman is in the Grabau mold, lacks MWC athleticism but is known as a shooter and heady PG. Jones is in the Keonta Vernon mold, undersized 4 man known for his effort, and Barnes is a project in the Herndon/Haldorson/Sellers mold. I don't expect any of the three to have an impact next season.

No empty cupboard? What about the 3 guys who transferred out? That is starting with an empty cupboard. Both Martinez and Washington were unknowns, except for practice, when Shyatt took over. And don't you think depth was an issue the past couple years? Yes, the cupboards were bare.

Lieberman looks much more like a point guard than Grabau. Jones will be a 3 not a 4. And at this point we don't know how Vernon will turn out. Barnes is a project who was recruited by some big programs and shut down the #1 ranked center recruit during an AAU game.

Look into your crystal ball all day, but the proof will be in what we see on the court next year and the future. Nothing worse than painting will a broad brush.

Jackson, Harrison, and Mbaye all transferred out after Shyatt was hired. Having said that..addition by subtraction there, so I don't fault Shyatt for not being able to re-recruit them (if he even tried).

However, he inherited the following line-up:

Luster
Martinez
Cruz
Washington
Waddell

Other than Nance, who else on the current roster breaks into that lineup?

In terms of the recruits, it is certainly possible that they will develop into great players, but at this point in time they are not at the same level as players being recruited by our conference peers. Sometimes you get lucky and an unheralded recruit develops into an impact player (Nance is an example). But building an entire roster of those types of players is not a recipe for success.

In terms of 15 years ago, I agree but you asked "what year under Shyatt has proved we will be anywhere close to .500". That seems to be a bit of an extreme question if your sample size is only two years. If that's the case, than we were close to .500 in exactly half of his seasons. So, it's a 50/50 chance we will be near .500 (yes, that is TIC).

I agree on the performance YTD. It has been poor.

Next two games are going to be really tough. I hope fans pack the AA for UNM....the team will need it. And then next week Saturday will be very tough too. Boise went on a 24-0 run on Fresno at one point yesterday. At least the team pulled the tall straw and only plays SDSU once (in Laramie).
Pack the AA. Thats really funny.

But god forbid we reduce the capacity of it! Because you know that one time every 15 years it does get sold out, boy howdy!
