Wyoming would drop the sport and go all out for basketball Gonzaga style before moving to the Big Sky.

I would be all for this. I think we can build a strong basketball program in the vein of Gonzaga, Wichita State, etc. While I would certainly miss September tailgating in Laramie, I wouldn't miss getting pounded game in and game out. I can't remember the last game I went to the team actually won.

You would be all for this? Are you out of your mind? Drop football? Get lost. We have only just begun to build a perennial conference contender with Craig Bohl. When we're on the cusp of winning the MWC in the next few years and the state is going ga-ga over Wyoming football again for the first time in eons...I'll remember your insane thoughts.

Nope, I didn't write it, but I don't have to tell you I agree with it 100%. It's long overdue we move down to where we can compete.

I know you all disagree. I have facts on my side. You have history and hope. So, keep thumping your chests about how good the football program was in the 60s, 70s and 80s, and I will keep pointing out how it's been one of the worst football programs in Division I/FBS since the late 90s. Keep enjoying those three and four win seasons with the occasional New Mexico Bowl thrown in there. Talk about a bowl to get excited about. Keep enjoying getting worked over by Eastern Michigan. But hey, we're FBS, right? Yahoo!!!!

You say I don't care about the program, but look in the mirror. It's you who doesn't care. You don't care how bad the team is, or for how long. You can't see the forest for the trees. You don't care about Wyoming football at all, you care about the FBS designation. Twenty years from now, when three more coaches have been hired and fired and the next guy is "going to turn it around," you'll all still be here, parroting the same things over and over. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Pick your cliche. I'm convinced that you're projecting your own surrender monkey life experience onto UW Football. Thank God the program's sooooo much bigger than you or your way of thinking. Somewhere in there, I believe, is an agenda to make yourself feel better about settling for whatever instead of getting what you really want (because, darn it, it's just too hard and you're just not good enough) by seeing UW Football do the same. You DON'T have facts on your side. FACT is, it's not an option. UW can either play FBS Football or not play football.

Apparently we do have a choice. We haven't been competitive at FBS football for nearly 20 years. You probably believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy as well. What you call surrender I call common sense. Let me ask you, realistically, how many years of the status quo are you willing to take before enough is enough? Oh, you're right. We can play FBS Football or not play football. That's the choice. FCS, from a financial and Title IX standpoint is not an option.

Well South Dakota State would destroy Wyoming. And even *gulp* Joe Glenn's South Dakota Coyotes would probably give them a run for their money.

Maybe they'd beat us at football, maybe they wouldn't but they will still be the South Dakota whatevers, and we'll still be the University of Wyoming Cowboys. We'll still have an endowment of $586M and rising with competitive men's and women's Basketball, Wrestling, Volleyball, Soccer, etc. What will USD have?

I truly wish "University of Wyoming Cowboys" held a fraction of the cache you think it does. You must be in your golden years, because you seem to think UW football is held in the regard it was many decades ago. Now it's a program that was recently ranked 127th out of 128 teams. Ok, you drop to FCS - three fourths of you team will bolt, the coaching staff will bolt, nine tenths of the fans will bolt, and the money is all gone. What are you going to do now?

OK someone answer me a question then. I truly want to know. If you're one of the people who say you would stop following the team if it dropped a level, tell me why that is the case. Why would you incredibly passionate fans suddenly stop caring? What is it about the FBS designation you hold so dear? Why could you turn your fandom off overnight? Is seeing a Nebraska or Texas come to the War once in a while all that captivates your interest? What about being 3-9 year after year in FBS is so much better than being 10-2 in FCS? It's still football. It's still on Saturday. It's still tailgating. It's all those things, only we don't know we are going to get trucked prior to kickoff. So someone please tell me what the big deal is?

I'm as loyal to UW and its mission as anyone else, and I will express that loyalty, financially, as its needs inspire me to. An FCS Football program doesn't exactly make me reach for my checkbook too quickly. Same goes with most of the people I know who park around me...

The problem you have, SD, is you think most of Wyoming's fans think like you, They don't, and they won't. Those are facts. Most successful, generous, bleed-Brown-and-Gold Wyoming fans are ambitious, forward thinkers who don't believe in quitting. That's a fact.

The initiator of the thread, who most likely wrote the letter to The Boomerang, is fighting a big time losing cause in that there is not now, nor to the best of my recollection since becoming a Brown & Gold devotee back in 2002, any conversation on a substantive level by any UW officials about a drop down to another football level.

So then, what are we really talking about here?

I'd prefer another thread about the senseless suggestions that somehow The War gets topped off with a dome.
