So what did the kid do? He posted Hankerson's 3-point shooting stats justifying why he said he needed benched.
Hankerson is shooting 32.7% from 3-point range. Nance is shooting 30.8% from 3-point range.

I guess since that's the only justification a "fan" needs to call for a player to be benched, it would be okay for me to tweet that Larry Nance needs to be benched too.

I don't even know where to start. How to start. Holy shit man.

First of all, don't tell me the fuckin stats. I don't give a shit. Tell the kid who said Hankerson should be benched since that is who your issue is with apparently.
Secondly, it was about Hankersons poor 3 point shooting recently. Not on the season.

Finally, you really want me to explain why Larry Nance shouldn't be benched and Hankerson should based off their stats?

Reading your posts lower my IQ.

Wow I read this thread and decided I must step in. It's easy as an older fan to sit back and defend this team without knowing some backstory, but let me chime in as an anonymous (yes we are allowed to that, but more on that in a minute) gentleman who happens to go to school at UW and see these guys on a routine basis. Did stuff like this happen back in the day? Sure, but I can assure you all that I am flat out embarrassed by not just our player's reactions on twitter, but the off the court conduct. Here's a rundown:

1. This runs far deeper than any of you know. As someone pointed out Larry does not follow this kid but there is absolutely a deeper connection via the two males which is likely why Larry saw it. Some of you may know the connection, others may not. I will not go into it but you may be able to fathom a guess. Certain things have a knack of changing a guy, one of those things being money. In this case it's not money, it's that "other" thing. What makes it worse is the connection is only secondary affiliation. (None of that makes any sense but moral of the story is there is a reason for why Larry called out this particular fan). For Larry to stoop to these lows of calling out a fan for tweeting an opinion is absolutely ridiculous plain and simple. Grow some thick skin, quit being a baby, and get over it.

2. The level they took it too is absurd. To go as far as to say "we don't want you as a fan, don't come to our games". Jesus you'd think he stole the players' mother's Wyoming shirts and was burning them in the town square. Look I get the we got our brother's back mentality, hell I respect it even....but under different circumstances. Since when are fans not allowed to be disgruntled and vent. He said what we were all thinking. He backed up his opinion with facts. Now YikYak is a different story. People get down right dumb aggressive and mean about our players on there. Say disgusting things. Had the team banded together and responded to that I wouldn't have batted an eye. But instead they make asses of themselves for getting on a kid who said what we all were thinking. What's the danger in playing someone else for a change? No need to be crybabies on social media.

2a. In response to the players asking what that kid ever did with his life or how he has no room to talk never having played college basketball. I hate to break it to them but people can be informative without having played college basketball. Heck, I know several people who are great basketball players, incredibly skilled, and have a great basketball iq (something this team lacks in my opinion) but lacked the body type to play at this level. It's tough to argue that DC is not athletically gifted, but could you imagine if he had the other essentials? Simply put, people can know the fundamentals of basketball and basketball strategy without having played. I would even go as far as to say that ones who have played or coached, have thought exactly what that kid tweeted. To me the players came off as bullies in this situation basically saying "shut your damn mouth. you don't even play college basketball". That is where the stats don't lie as much as the players would like you to believe. They say he brings passion and energy, which can be a good thing, but what else? You can dress my 90 grandmother who is in a wheelchair (dire hard pokes fan btw) up in a #1 pokes jersey and she could fire up the team like you wouldn't believe!! But I wouldn't hesitate to bench her if she was failing time and time again to convert in areas that a Division I basketball player should. Fan's have a right to voice their opinions.

3. Trey Washington....what an idiot. This one's almost too easy to criticize. Seriously wtf kind of reaction is that? Do we really want that to be the face of the University? Scary to me. It's also scary to me that we have students like this on campus. But it seems to fit in with another issue that will be once again discussed later in this post.

4. To the guy who insists that everyone is a coward for hiding behind a message board: What do you think the point of a message board is? Most fans like to anonymously voice their concerns about the athletics program without fearing the repercussions that could happen otherwise. Not to mention, why are you openly advocating that someone should try and fight one of our student athletes? Did we not learn our lesson from that 2 years ago? Sports fans are notorious for being brutal on social media. Most players feed off of that and turn it into passion and motivation. Instead ours went on a butthurt rant saying "don't come watch us. You're not a true pokes fan". This is irritating to no end. In the words of Coach Bohl, he wants players that come to play for the University of Wyoming, not just at it. Almost all of our players are the latter. I've might as well had a steamboat tattooed on my chest the day I came out of the womb. I drank brown and gold milk straight from the teet. I've shed more tears of both sadness and joy for this program over the years to fill a swimming pool. I've stood solo in a section of 5,000 screaming BYU fans in Provo proudly wearing my brown and gold. I would do anything to see Wyoming athletics excel short of giving up my first born child. I would be absolutely pissed if a player who simply came to play at a school told me to not come to games for simply voicing an opinion (which was tame considering the choke job we watched). An opinion not tweeted directly at anyone about what that person truly felt was at least worth consideration for potentially giving this team a spark. Questioning someone's fan-hood or in this case trying to revoke might as well be fighting words.

5) Oh those off the court issues. Happens everywhere no doubt. My childhood idols on the 2002 championship team probably were just as bad, but can these players at least consider the fact that little kids look up to them? The stories I know about some of the individuals on this team make me sick to my stomach. I pray that none of them are true for all parties involved. Some things most people are better off knowing but it's too the point I cannot even clap my hands for certain individuals on this team. It would be comparable to rooting for Ray Rice for me. If a player is reading this, please take a good hard look in the mirror. Quintillion believed being a good man meant imitating the good people you idolized. You are idols to kids, please act like it and not like someone who belongs in the state pen. I see no need to be in the Buckhorn every waking moment but that is college. Hopefully someday we can get some gym rats who would maybe take a Thursday or Friday night to go to an empty gym and practice free throws. I hate BYU to death and beyond, but I will give them that. They have hard workers who care about winning more than acting like celebrities to get the "local cuisine" that night.

Grow up and act like men, don't ostracize your fanbase. It's comparable to a bratty child who always gets what they want and throw a fit when they get told no for the first time. Our players are idolized to an extreme level and get insane amounts of SportsCenter tweets, etc. When things go bad the first thing you do is verbally attack someone for expressing a largely irrelevant tweet, you are showing weakness. It shows the kind of character you have. When you get a bad grade are you the type who bitches and moans that the teacher is unfair, or are you the person who studies harder and leaves no doubt on the next exam? When the going gets rough you find out a lot about person/team. I don't like what we've seen from this one.

This post is extremely long, and most will not read, but I spent a great deal of time typing it because I'm exercising my right to opinion on my Wyoming Cowboys. I will always root for the Pokes thick and thin regardless of circumstances. I hope this season ends up with us holding the trophy. Call me what you will. Delete it if you want. It's just one college kid's take.

Obviously you're not a REAL fan if you're not willing to give up your first born child. You can always have more.

please give more info.....no need for names etc if not 100% sure its true.

Seems as if you are stating it is more serious than just going out and looking for strange.

This. That was one of the best, albeit vague, posts in a while. There's gotta be something you can elaborate on

Well, now. Isnt this is a bombshell start to a day.

Just a word of caution. Although all of us like a juicy story, I still remind everyone to be civil and tread lightly. As soon as fans jump into the drama we've stooped to the same level. Stay away from speculative defamatory stuff. That is where fans could get in trouble.

That said, what a shame if this stuff is true. You'd think after LukeGate that Shyatt wouldn't want this ever again. And. ...here we go.

Lack of focus is GLARINGLY obvious right now.

I am probably in the minority on this one, but other than Trey Washington's tweet (more on that in a minute), I just don't see the big deal regarding the Nance/Adams/etc. tweets.

Yes, it's probably not productive for players to engage fans in twitter debates about playing time of their teammates, but it was a debate with one fan and the players were sticking up for their teammate. Watching the team through the year I can definitely tell this is a pretty close knit group. Not everyone, but most of the team is very excited when other players make plays. We want them to, pardon the cliche, "have each other's back" on the court, so we shouldn't be surprised when they have that mentality overall.

Also, I know nothing, but the post by pokingaway indicates there might be more to the interaction with that particular individual. Which would make sense, because I am pretty sure that one tweet was hardly the most negative thing written that night.

In terms of some of the posts about the players social activities, all I can say is "same as it ever was". Nobody cares when they win, but it's suddenly an issue when they lose. Now, with some of the history under Shyatt I am surprised there isn't greater restrictions during the season, but I can't really muster up any outrage that college students are partying. Shocking.

Now that I got that out of the way, let me tell why I am crushingly disappointed in what happened after this game. The stuff above is not a big deal and if we had twitter 10, 20, 30 years ago it probably would have been the same. However, you simply cannot have the following:

1. Student-athletes that represent the University of Wyoming challenging or threatening anybody (even BYU fans..well, ok maybe we can make an exception) in a public forum. That is an exceedingly bad look.

2. Individuals with known close associations to the coaching staff and certain players commenting negatively on twitter about Wyoming fans and UW. You choose your circle, and while you cannot be held accountable for what those in the circle do, you have to understand that your reputation will be associated with those individuals.

3. A continued "us against them" philosophy as it relates to our own fanbase. This ties into #2, but Shyatt himself as repeatedly called out our own fans. Now, I happen to agree with him most of the time as it relates to attendance in particular, but there is clearly a mentality of negativity towards our own fans that has been fostered and that is incredibly damaging in the long run. I wish we had better attendance, and it still pisses me off, but a little context is important. We outdraw BSU and CSU, two programs whose coaches are apparently not criticizing their fanbase. Also, two programs that are in the running for a NCAA berth and who have been to the NCAA in recent years (unlike our once in the last 25 years). Our attendance is on par with (Washington, Oregon) or greater than (OSU, WSU, ASU, Stanford, USC) many PAC12 schools. Our fans are not perfect but I don't think this type of commentary is warranted.

I don't think we need to have any elaborations or more details. Pokingaway made a good post and makes good points. Hopefully his post will make its way to someone with the wherewithal to act upon it. We have all heard enough stories and rumors about the athletes in Laramie over the years. Nothing new here, but we do have to trust in Shyatt and Bohl to run a classy program with discipline and respect. I don't care to hear any of the "dirt". To an extent, kids will be kids. However, anything serious I would hope gets relayed to the coaching staffs to let them handle the situation(s).

my big thing outta all this is we have a good to almost great team and all the pieces are there to get over the proverbial hump to be a factor in the conference year in and year out, but then it seems we lose one of our best players to a suspension, injury or something stupid over all. It's really hard to follow, pour all my emotions into this program year in and year out only to be let down. I sometimes want more too, and I don't think I'm being unrealistic in asking for us to win a Conf Championship every 15 years or so. Yes I'm a passionate fan, yes I voice my opinon, yes i go overboard from time to to time, but I'm allowed as a fan and alumni. I only want the best for my team, my school
Opinons are just that and in no way should they ever be taken personally, frustrations will always run rampant, but be better than the tweet and be the bigger man during the rant. It kinda made the team look bad reacting to something that really wasn't a personal attack on a player, it was just a thought that shoulda been in an inside voice, but it is what it is. We can dwell on this, point fingers etc. but in the overall status, let's rally together do what we can to help our team beat a pesky Utah St team on Wed. Let's try to pack the AA , send our stud seniors out the way they truly deserve to be sent out and then make one heck of a push to make a great tourney run. if it's NIT or CBI or anyother, I'll love them all the same. Thanks for a wonderful season Cowboys, we aren't done yet. Into every life a little rain must fall...status quo

Good first post pokingaway - I appreciate the honesty - and you do write well. Thanks for posting, that is the type of post that makes this message board great.

Hopefully, Kevin McKinney of someone within the Athletics Dept. is giving the basketball team a lesson in public relations. Sometimes there are things you need to address and respond to. An example might be if someone is falsely posting that Player X is constantly beating his girlfriend. Something like that you need to address get the right information out and quash the misinformation. There are other times when something is posted you will only make worse by responding. The players took exception to what was posted, responded and basically poured gasoline on a fire. I truly think if they would have not said anything the post would have experienced a fast and quiet death. I understand having your teammates back, I understand there may be some history with the tweeter. Still, if the players wouldn't have responded most people would have thought the tweet was just some knucklehead spouting off and the tweet would have filtered down and been lost in cyberspace.

All that being said, is Hankerson an offensive liability? lately, yes, but the kid works his ass off on defense. I didn't play basketball past high school, but I had more than one coach say if you can play defense there's a place for you on the floor. Take that for what its worth.

Goddamn can't we just leave this thread at what it is? Young 20 somethings fucking up. Guess what? Happens about 300 to 400 million times across the planet daily. The next step is you TRY to learn from your mistakes, gain experience in life, and then move on. As we well know some people NEVER DO. They just stay in the horrible cycle of it all. I feel like we need to get off this subject. As far as individual dirt on players too. I don't really care. That shit has always been going on at UW. I know plenty of stories from the old days myself, but I'll keep them close to my chest. Really not any of our business and life will happen to all of us.

I'm pretty positive all of you on this board FUCKED UP hard in your early 20's too at least a few times or are doing so right now. Your full of a lot of stuff at that age and guess what? Most of it isn't intelligence.

Amen Cosmic.

This stuff has been going on for years. The stories about Dembo and that gang will turn your hair white. And the things I saw during the Dees/Joby Wright years would do the same. Quinn Higgins didn't have knee problems because of stuff that happened on the basketball court.

Do I wish these kids all lived like the Pope and did nothing but practice and lift? Sure. But I'm almost 40 and have a little more perspective on the fleeting nature of youth than they do. Some things have to be learned the hard way.

18-22 year old athletes are going to party and try to get some strange. Thus it ever was, and thus it ever will be.

Is 22 the cutoff?? Shit, I've been breaking the rules for quite a few years now... :thumb:

No. Because this "whole world is against us" is total bullshi and they are alienating the very people paying their way. Just today, our good friend Cooke took to Twitter AGAIN.

"I know you heard things...I'm not new to this...nobody really likes us except for us. All I ever needed was the squad so that's what up."

What the hell does this even mean? NO ONE IS AGAINST YOU GUYS!!!!!! Hellfrey david. You sound like jr high girls whining. "All I ever needed was this squad"...oh really, cause yesterday you were begging for fans to "come show up and send our seniors out the right way." Its hypocrisy and absurd.

UW is bigger than any player. Players come and go. Legacies are earned by action and appearance. Not in 140 characters.

I think it's a lot deeper than just attendance.

You're right. It's because we don't blindly support the players and AD regardless of what is happening with them, think for ourselves, and call their bullshit. I have nothing to back this up, but I doubt you could find a similar school to Wyo that travels to tournaments and, to a point, away games in general as good as UW fans do. Or one that has enough vocal, passionate fans, to support having 2 different message boards like this.

time to move along, all of us that have twitter and friend them just maybe we need to send true appologies...LOL...NOT
