Jeff Tedford to Wyoming?

Holy hell...if Burman gets Tedford and some cash for assistants, that is huge. I know Tedford had a sour run at the end, but this was a guy that was getting romanced to go to the NFL or other, big-time programs, if I remember correctly. He is relatively young and hooked into assistants and recruits we have really never had a shot at. If he has the fire in the belly again, which an interview should sort out, we could be onto something big.

I do not think that the cupboard is bare - we have a lot of RS kids that will be able to contribute. However, the ability to take the raw ingredients in that RS pool (and returning starter pool) was never really there with Dave. With Tedford - different ballgame, at least IMHO.

I seem to think I remember he was fairly good at adjustments and in-game coaching, but at the time I was watching Cal, everyone was so high on him, that it could have been overlaid with a lot of hype. My two big questions for any coach:

(1) Can you develop the lesser known kids and get some of the middle tier players for the program? and
(2) Can you make adjustments at half time or are you going to be a stubborn mule about your game plan?

Complex, apparently:

There are all sorts of articles and blog sites about him overthinking the offense and adapting too much. But there are also multiple articles about Kiffin and Orgeron and others seeking him out to advise them.

He is one of the finest pro-style coaches out there. Many of teams would love him to be their OC but he only wants to be a HC.

He historically has ran a pro-style offense. Not sure if he would be able to pull that off here?

I wonder that too and also how he would handle losing? I think he would be a solid hire, for sure, and am not bagging him, but this is from a Cal beat writer:

Through the years, and in particular when he started losing, Jeff became closed off -- to both the media and his players. He restricted access to practices, become more and more vague about injuries, and generally distrusted the media and the fan base. Whereas I shared a beer with 2003 Jeff Tedford after the Insight Bowl win, I couldn't even shake the hand of 2012 Jeff Tedford during Spring ball. He stopped being a part of the Cal community and didn't make an effort to have the team be part of it either

Sadly that happens with a lot of good HC's. Much the same happened to Andy Reid. They say he is one of the nicest and most approachable coaches you would find but the last few years in Philly he went into a shell. Now he is back out of that shell in KC.

I would assume the pressure to maintain long term success gets so tough one just balls up once the walls start crumbling around them. Reason so many coaches don't stay at one spot for to long.

He's proven he can win at Cal, develop their players, make adjustments, and other things.

My questions;
1. Do we have the guys, especially up front, to run the pro offense?
2. Can we get a decent amount of money for coordinators?
3. Does he still have that fire to win and develop that made him a hot commodity at Cal for so long?
4. How would recruiting go for him outside the PAC-12?
5. Will he also do recruiting in Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, and other places where we have established recruiting pipelines aside from California?

I think those are all legit questions.

I don't think recruiting regions would be a issue. Much of his recruiting was in California and the Northwest. I'm sure he will have coaches with Mountain connections. Would still like to see us recruit in the Northern Snowbelt also.

Your point 1 is my concern as well. We haven't been able to get linemen forever. I remember Glenn trying to get linemen and smash mouth football. It didn't end well. Naturally, that does not mean all coaches would have the same problem, but I think it is a valid concern.

There is a reason most of the smaller teams transition to the spread: it neutralizes speed and superior talent.

With Glenn we had Demo and Wynell.

We just never had a QB.
If we had Brett Smith for 4 years under Glenn, don't you think we would have won quite a few more games?

I guess I don't see why the O-Linemen could block in the run game, but couldn't in the pass game.

It wasn't just the QBs that was the problem under Glenn. It was the o-line as well. Truth be told, our o-line play really hasn't improved much since.

Difference in opinion, I guess, but I don't remember a solid O line since maybe old pool shark. If I remember correctly, we could push a little his last year.

The highest I remember Glenn's rushing rankings was 34th and that as 08. Our lines have been bad for awhile. Even our best D lines in the Glenn years were just good but not great even within the MW.

I'm not being a downer here, but my opinion always has been that our shortcomings have been more the lines than anything.

How does Nebraska do it? They have tons of big farm boys. Oh, is it because we have ranches, where the kids work hard all day so they don't end up weighing 300 pounds, while Nebraska is full of a bunch of tractor riding, corn eating tubby boys?

Where do these big boys come from?

I like the idea of Tedford my only concern is that he did hire Marcus Arroyo away from us as his QB coach. I wasn't that impressed with Arroyo but maybe he is a good position coach.
