Goldenbear said:His run at Cal dipped when Kevin Riley drove my #2 ranked Bears down into the red zone against Oregon State and decided to get tackled in bounds rather than throw the ball away…time expired and we lost a #1 ranking, can't remember who was #1 but they lost that day as Cal played. Anyway, JT lost a little of his edge that day and his downfall began. I think it's more than that though. He had to deal with the worst facilities in the Pac..which he was able to lead a massive renovation. He had to deal with the Treesitters…Berkeley, sigh.
I think JT was just tired. Cal is a tough nut to crack for sports. Graduation rates are really what killed JT's tenure. Say what you will about Cal but we do want our players to graduate and when the rates fell to the bottom of the Pac-12…he had to go. I tend to believe it was a combo of everything that wore the guy out.
That one play was absolutely brutal. I still remember Tedford's reaction which was cut off some on this clip. If Cal was winning, that graduation rate business would be conveniently ignored. I agree that it was part of the reason he was fired and am also hopeful that if Wyoming can pull this off, it would be a huge get. If grad rates were Tedford's biggest knock, that's really the least of my concerns at Wyoming.
Side rant: For anyone questioning the perceived move from the Bay Area to Laramie, do more research on his history. 8 years in Canada before Fresno, Oregon and then Cal. Different places are cold, and lazy media plays up Laramie being cold. I wish the average fan didn't feed that paper tiger. /rant over
