Coaches Presser 10/12

Sims has to feel he wasted his time rehabbing to come back from injury. I wonder - if Sims got 27 carries in a game, how many yards does he get? I’m guessing it is more than 92.

But rather than give a single QB that many carries, why not at least break it up between QBs?

I don't think UW had much over $1M for NIL so my guess he was around $250K but really here nor there because I doubt Sims or Drube are getting any NIL
I think I saw UW’s total football NIL was estimated to be about $2 million this year.

Most websites that project individual player’s NIL value put Hughes NIL value between $150-300k. If we truly paid $800k, then we probably overpaid significantly for him.

Where are you getting that from?

According to this article - Wyoming is apparently attempting to budget $5 million to football NIL.

I think the $800k is a confused number - and maybe I even stated it on this forum. Here is what I have learned. UW is paying Hughes somewhere in the $100-$300k realm. After he signed with us, CSU came forward with an offer of $800k - but he had already inked his deal with UW for the season. My guess is that he is getting $250k. Which is way too much - but a heck of a lot better than $800k.

There had to be a contract in place for him not to accept CSU's offer. Loyalty will only get you a lot but I doubt it would be worth $500k to $700k to second or third tier QB in the portal. I would love to see the actual contract that is being used by teams.

Your information appears correct!

I tracked down the UW BOT public session report from March 2026. On page 74, the report states that they are currently (as of March 2026) paying $2 million for football in NIL but intend to raise the figure to $4-$5 million.

That might be a signed deal that I would have advised him to breach if these facts are correct.

Presumably, Wyoming's deal would have had a liquidated damages provision for breach (i.e. if you breach the contract, you pay this amount of money...basically the same thing as a coach buying out of their agreement). Liquidated damages provisions typically are not going to be upheld if they exceed the value of the contract. So if he signed a $250,000 deal with Wyoming and if CSU offered him $800,000...

He might have been wise to breach the Wyoming deal and pay Wyoming a max of $250,000 and he still makes more by getting $550,000 net at CSU.

Accordingly, those numbers seem really suspect to me. It would be crazy not to take the $800K deal even if he already signed with Wyoming.

Even a contract in place would not explain rejecting an offer for more than 3 times the amount. Accordingly, I am very suspicious of these reports that Wyoming is paying between $100-$300K and CSU subsequently offered $800K. Every person is taking the CSU deal at that point.

maybe him and taylor really are in bed together then. because if that's true then he would be dumb to not take their offer (why the hell are either program offering 1/10th of their NIL budget to a QB like him anyways?

Just what I heard. I don't disagree with your analysis. Perhaps we could offer up a trade for the last half of the season if they take over his contract?

Sources say that Sims is widely seen as by far the best QB on the roster, but Taylor is playing favorites with Hughes, given their histories together at W&M, to the detriment of the team. Apparently Taylor's interview with 7220 where he gutted the backups to heap praise on a feckless Hughes has gone over like a fart in church up and down the roster. In related news, sources also say that the locker room is a mess and we are likely facing a mass exodus following the season. Given the level of play to date, I don't know what I think about losing some of these guys (could be addition by subtraction) but I do think it speaks volumes about this staff and their ability to motivate. I also worry that we will be in triage mode trying to fill a roster with a lame duck AD and coach and will have a roster full of FCS and D2 also-rans trying to play FBS football. Then again, that strategy may just get us to the Tossed Salad Bowl this year...so...yippee. We celebrate the mediocre here better than most any other fanbase in FBS so of course we will run it back again. Finally, sources indicate that Sawful is seen as an incredibly awkward guy that doesn't have a clue how to connect with players. Just going off of his press interviews and sideline demeanor - this seems to track.

My guess is that we probably come out with wins against NIU, AFA and UTEP and it relieves some of the pressure on the General, TB and Jay so they can get through another year of Jay's awful contract so the buyout is manageable after what is shaping up to be a generally craptastic 2027 season. If you look at the collective win totals for the teams we beat this year, it really is a matter of us being the tallest midget. Leadership will tout we have turned the corner and "look at us - we got a bowl so we can't be bad" will be spoonfed to us by the Information Ministry. Most of us here will gag. The luxury box set will golf clap. Another year of my life will pass without a decent Wyoming team (what's new?). And my distance from UW will widen even more. Oh well. Candidly, I don't want TB to pick another coach at UW, so if it means that we eat another poopwich next year and save ourselves from another unimaginative and uninspiring hire, I'm ok with it. I am worried about the collateral damage that two straight years of ugly and frustrating football will do to an already apathetic and unmotivated fanbase though. That said, it they don't care, why should I? Maybe Sundance can excite us on the hardwood? Ezell sure as hell isn't going to.
My sources deep in the program have told me the same. There is some major favoritism going on in the program on both sides of the ball.

The morale is hanging on by a thread because of the qb situation on offense and not playing/rotating or even starting certain defensive players. This is a major problem.

A competitive program whose goal is to win every game will allow the players to compete every week for playing time and does not have the lineups set in stone regardless of game performance or practice performance.

This will be a perpetually uninspiring team led by uninspiring coaches. It's shameful they have the audacity to live off the accomplishments of past WYO teams and actually believe they are in that club.

They should start Steven Perez. Not sure who else on D is not getting the rotation unless they are talking at Safety but the DL has had a ton of rotation and I have seen DeCosta playing a lot lately.

Now at WR it is evident Bouknight has issues with players and the best are not playing
