Coaches Presser 10/12

Nothing of real note.

Was asked about RZ offense
  • Missed blocks
  • bad execution
Were beat on double moves at SJSU and NIU does a lot of double moves in their route tree

Deen will be back this week at CB with a cast on his hand.

One reporter, not Alex, Cody or Dion, asked why WR play has been ass; yes he literally said ass in his question to Coach Sawvel.

What was Sawvel's response?

This man is a hero

If only he could have followed up with a similar question about the defensive play calling.
I was ok with the defense. We held them to 13. Fresno St held them to 10 but scored 26. Didn't feel like D was a problem at all. It seems like it because the games are always tight due to not scoring on O

I would have asked about rotations because it is evident that Perez is our best LB

Rutherford has been such a disappointment at LB. He just doesn't read the game well. Always seems to be a step or two out of position.

I don't think Stuhlsatz is 100%. He has still been OK, but he looked better early in the year.

Put in sims
Sources say that Sims is widely seen as by far the best QB on the roster, but Taylor is playing favorites with Hughes, given their histories together at W&M, to the detriment of the team. Apparently Taylor's interview with 7220 where he gutted the backups to heap praise on a feckless Hughes has gone over like a fart in church up and down the roster. In related news, sources also say that the locker room is a mess and we are likely facing a mass exodus following the season. Given the level of play to date, I don't know what I think about losing some of these guys (could be addition by subtraction) but I do think it speaks volumes about this staff and their ability to motivate. I also worry that we will be in triage mode trying to fill a roster with a lame duck AD and coach and will have a roster full of FCS and D2 also-rans trying to play FBS football. Then again, that strategy may just get us to the Tossed Salad Bowl this year...so...yippee. We celebrate the mediocre here better than most any other fanbase in FBS so of course we will run it back again. Finally, sources indicate that Sawful is seen as an incredibly awkward guy that doesn't have a clue how to connect with players. Just going off of his press interviews and sideline demeanor - this seems to track.

My guess is that we probably come out with wins against NIU, AFA and UTEP and it relieves some of the pressure on the General, TB and Jay so they can get through another year of Jay's awful contract so the buyout is manageable after what is shaping up to be a generally craptastic 2027 season. If you look at the collective win totals for the teams we beat this year, it really is a matter of us being the tallest midget. Leadership will tout we have turned the corner and "look at us - we got a bowl so we can't be bad" will be spoonfed to us by the Information Ministry. Most of us here will gag. The luxury box set will golf clap. Another year of my life will pass without a decent Wyoming team (what's new?). And my distance from UW will widen even more. Oh well. Candidly, I don't want TB to pick another coach at UW, so if it means that we eat another poopwich next year and save ourselves from another unimaginative and uninspiring hire, I'm ok with it. I am worried about the collateral damage that two straight years of ugly and frustrating football will do to an already apathetic and unmotivated fanbase though. That said, it they don't care, why should I? Maybe Sundance can excite us on the hardwood? Ezell sure as hell isn't going to.

Honestly most of the guys on the roster would enter the portal and never see another D1 team again. I could see WRs leaving and we probably retain Sawvel for another year. With that Tripodi and Bouknight would probably need to be shown the door and more than likely the new CB coach.

I have a harder time believing he does not connect with the players, but I guess we may not know. With a roster of 105 it would be really hard to connect with all of them so 5-10 players saying they are not connecting with the coach would be outliers from the roster overall.

The QB situation is wild to me and it afflicted Bohl and Sawvel where they don't start the best QB, see 2015 and Cam Coffman starting over Josh Allen. The my way or the highway coaching seems to crossed over a bit. Josh Allen was a gunslinger and Bohl hated it. We can see Brantley at WR is far and away the best option but has been benched all year...probably missed a random block on one play
