2024/2025 Wrestling Season

Whats the story on this guy? Looks like a top recruit that has bounced around a bit?

He has signed a few places in Illinois and Penn before ending up at OSU. When the coaching change happened he decided to leave and head to ISU. Not sure that was the right fit for him and making 197 is probably too much. He is dominant in Freestyle at 97Kg (213 lbs) and doesn't carry much bodyfat at that weight.
He will probably be 230 as a HWT and only around 5'8/9 so his speed and strength are going to cause issues for people. Wyoming has two legitimate title contenders at 197 and HWT now. The backend of Wyoming's lineup is going to be powerful.

F. This was our prize recruit of a couple years ago. It didn’t seem like he was close to cracking the lineup, so maybe he’s not that good
He may not have been able to make 133 consistently and was not beating Cole Brooks in the room either. Sometimes recruits don't pan out. You have Saenz (limited action) and Luke Willochel (incoming) to compete at that spot. I suspect Wyoming looks in the portal for a 25/33 as they have 3 open roster spots

Makes sense. Wrestling rooms are competitive, and not every recruit ends up being the perfect fit. Hoping he finds success wherever he lands next.

I am guessing you are making the assumption Novak returns. The portal is open until May 2. I’ll actually be surprised if we keep him just from a money standpoint and what he can probably fetch on the open market.

You are right in the portal is open, however, some young men are more educated in the NIL and transfer realm. NIL does not have to come from random donors and some young men are able to get NIL money via their own means and brand and sponsorships.

Check out this interview with Wyoming new HWT as he talks about NIL and transferring

Sefton Douglass has signed with UW by way of WWCC. Should be the 125 starter.

They recently signed another 165 HS signnee, Owen Hull.

Doesn’t seem like he’s very good since he couldn’t even crack the lineup here
I think he was good but I don't think he could make 133. If he wanted to be a 41 or 49 then he would have to beat Cole Brooks (full season under his belt) and Willochel at 49 (Avila will press).

OU also signed a 133 from MN so my assumption is he will be more comfortable at 41/49.

The real unknown for the starting line-up next year is who does make a go at 133? Saenz or do they roll with a TF (I prefer RS) in Willochel.

Is he good?
He was a NJCAA champ at WWCC then signed with Michigan State. I had heard he even took a visit to Iowa prior to that. He also beat Wyoming 133, Cooper Birdwell, in a dual in Laramie.

I say all that to say he definitely has the potential to be good. We just haven't seen him on the D1 circuit as he was RS last year at Michigan State.

Two Wyoming kids have the potential to start at 25 and 33 next year.

125 - Douglass
133 - Phelps
141 - Brooks
149 - Willochel
157/65 - Swan or Hill
174 - Davis
184 - Neitenbach
197 - Novak
HWT - Carroll

Incoming Lane Foard will press for that 74 spot as well as Isiah (125) and Luke (33/41). If they are TF I assume RS, but I have been proven wrong year after year. Gunner Henry is also a name to watch but more than likely to RS due to jam at 84-HWT

I think it is great to have two potential Wyoming kids starting at Wyoming and both NJCAA champs at Western Wyoming. Interestingly Phelps will likely replace former Western Wyoming NJCAA champ Garrett Ricks. Phelps record last year was 6-7 in tournaments so realistically we aren’t replacing the talent we lose with Volk, etc…but you build a program and interest in a program with the local kids that want to be there.

Ricks was supposed to be 125 and Volk was supposed to be at 33 so that is why Ricks was up at 33. I think Ricks walks about at like 140 so 33 was a little much for him.

Sefton did beat Volk once in FS in 2017

Shaping up to be a very competitive team
Dual team very much so. This team could be like the 2021 team and make a solid Big 12 tourney run as well. Some guys have crapped their singlets in March in the past so these guys may be able to get over the hump.

A couple of years ago teams would start duals against Wyoming at 25 or 33 because they knew the front end was not as good and flip the momentum quickly in duals
