BYU in no hurry to return to Mountain West (WyoSports.net)

Wyoming hasn’t played BYU or Utah since the split in any of the three sports.

That appears to be fine with Wyoming fans.

A current WyoSports poll asks if fans would like to see Wyoming return to playing BYU and Utah on a regular nonconference basis.

Of the 772 votes cast, 300 voted for “absolutely not.”

That's what "I have to root for the conference" means.

Top 5 Wyoming, BYU football games (WyoSports.net)

5. Oct. 18, 1969: Wyoming 40, BYU 7

The score wasn’t the significant part of the game, although with the home victory the Cowboys improved to 5-0 and maintained their No. 16 national ranking.

Fourteen black football players wanted to wear black arm bands to protest what they felt was racial discrimination by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Coach Lloyd Eaton said no, one thing led to another, and Eaton kicked the 14 players off the team.

“A lot of fans felt like we didn’t need those guys after we beat BYU,” McKinney said. “We would have beaten anyone that day. The team was fired up, and it was a buzz-saw for the Cougars.”

TURELLI'S TAKE: Cowboys arrive for Poinsettia Bowl (WyoSports.net)

Even with all the delays, we did not let that take us off our schedule. We got straight to a meal and then had meetings. After the meetings we drove about 20 minutes away to our practice site where there was a nice, hour-long practice. Everyone looked good and it seemed like the flight had no affect with the focus of the team.

With brother in MLB, Wacha pitches in for Wyoming football (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Wyoming senior linebacker Lucas Wacha, who will start his final game for the Cowboys on Wednesday in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, remembers the night in Boston as “one of the coolest experiences ever.”

On Oct. 24, 2013, Wacha’s older brother Michael – then a 22-year-old rookie who’d already been named the NLCS MVP – allowed only three hits and two earned runs over six innings to power the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the World Series.

The brothers’ sporting lives had drifted to be worlds apart, but they were together again at Fenway, as they will be for the Poinsettia Bowl when Michael joins his parents, Tom and Karen, and younger sister, Brette, in Qualcomm Stadium for Wyoming’s matchup against BYU.

ESPN already has put in a request to interview Michael Wacha during the game. Michael, beset with shoulder problems while posting a 7-7 record in 2016, will no doubt be happy to let his little brother take a turn in the spotlight.

TURELLI'S TAKE: Wyoming has usual busy Sunday in San Diego (WyoSports.net)

Early morning wake up calls were needed to make it over to breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast there were various meetings before we boarded the buses and made our way to the junior college we are practicing at. Practice was an hour-and-15 minutes in helmets and shoulder pads. Players responded great to a new practice location, different schedule, and having different sorts of responsibilities. The offense was executing at a really high level, and defense had enthusiasm throughout. Redshirt junior nickel Jalen Ortiz wins my defensive practice MVP, and I would give my Coach of Practice award to Mike Bath. He got the running backs/fullbacks locked in and ready to go. He also is very funny, in my opinion. After practice the offensive travel team had a lift.

Wyoming continues to practice for Poinsettia Bowl - on grass (WyoSports.net)

UW redshirt sophomore quarterback Josh Allen said the first couple of practices went well.

“We’ll be ready to go come Wednesday,” he said. “We’re going to use the Mountain West championship loss to San Diego State as a source of motivation. You always want to end your season with a win. That’s what we’re preparing to do and that’s where our mindset is.”

Big plays a big part of Wyoming's offense (WyoSports.net)

“Huge plays at the right times,” said senior wide receiver Tanner Gentry, who leads UW with 65 catches for 1,213 yards and 12 touchdowns. “We have a really good quarterback who is able to extend plays longer than last year, which has allowed us wide receivers to make plays on the football.

“It started with that first game. It not only showed our big-play capabilities, but how resilient our team was. That kind of made the mark of what we wanted to be for the whole season.”

A road trip to Las Cruces to make up for cancelling a road trip to Moscow, Idaho in 2018 since dropping to I-AA/FCS that year. Interesting.

It'll be the first time we played NMSU in football since the 1950s.
