Wyoming Spring Practice 2014

If you watch the interview posted on wyosports.net, CCB said more teams lose on Saturday than win and I've been thinking about that quote for 20 minutes

Vorel: Wyoming cornerback Hayes strives to turn heads, erase doubt

Doubt is a powerful thing.

It can cripple and destroy. It is hungry. And the more you feed it, the more it grows. Doubt builds momentum like an avalanche, gaining steam and laying waste to entire cities.

Doubt is a virus. And once you catch it, it's difficult to shake. If you think otherwise, ask Tim Hayes.

Definitely sounds funny. I think he was trying to say that teams a lot of times beat themselves by making dumb mistakes or dumb turnovers. Just my interpretation though.

LOL...More like a Yogi Berra-ism. I'm sure what he was thinking made sense, but it came out wrong. That's okay....he's not paid to be a mathematician.

That's how I read it too, and it definitely happens a lot. One dumb mistake turns the tide because the team lets it cost them their focus and they start panicking.

I think if he had just added a few words we all would have said makes sense.

" More teams lose on saturday than win "

" More teams lose on saturday that are expected to win "

I'm fairly sure he was commenting on teams that beat themselves and I think we all got that but I actually played the youtube video over right after he said it because in my head I was thinking did that makes sense?

I immediately started thinking about dumb things coaches say past and present which it didn't seem near as bad.

I think it made perfect sense. The mathematical incongruity is what makes one focus on the more salient point that is self-focused rather than opponent-focused. I like it.

Your interpretation is correct. A free t-shirt for you. Bohl is just saying that more teams lose games because of mental mistakes and careless/bad turnovers than win games through solid execution. As he says, the goal is to minimize mistakes and take care of the football. (And physically beat the crap out of the opponent in the process.) :D

Vigen: Move from NDSU to Wyoming "liberating". Plus depth chart notes:

One thing I noticed from the article was the comment about a glimpse into the QB depth chart. I think Vorel misinterpreted what was going on when he noticed the order of reps taken.

He saw Kirk. go first and Thornton second to start the 7 on 7 drill and assumed those two had been slotted as one and two. What he wasn't aware of though, is the coach broke the QB's into two groups and had KIrk. and Young in a group with the "1's and 2's" and Thornton and Stratton with the "3's and 4's". Kirk. happened to start the session for his group and then they alternated to the other group which then Thornton led off.

Easy mistake, but I know that Kirk. and Young spent all of Saturday in that same group of offensive players out on the field the entire practice and never switched with the other guys inside.

Sounds like we have some guys stepping up on D, which is good. I am still worried about what has plagued us always and that is depth. Seems like we would be in games with Nebraska or Texas for a half and eventually they wore us down.

Wyoming Football: UW goes young to fill fullback role (WyoSports.net)

It’s something Drew Van Maanen knows well, but not so much for Brandon Lukenbill.

Those are the two leading candidates to play fullback for the University of Wyoming football team this fall.

The fullback was non-existent the previous five seasons as UW ran a spread offense. But first-year coach Craig Bohl wants to run more of a pro-style offense that utilizes the fullback.

yeah saturday Young and Kirk got the "1's" reps. they alternated for about 35 plays and then later on Stratton, Thornton and whoever the third guy is TJ i think split the "2's" reps they got about 30 as well.

Kirk is not forcing things although check downs every throw might get old for coach, young hasn't made mistakes just likes to take shots and throw them up, coach wants a bit more control from him. so they're about neck and neck, in terms of Positives and negatives.

Good stuff, thanks for the report!

Interesting.....still a long way to go, but that's a tough call for Bohl and co. Go with the guy who plays it too conservative, or the guy who takes one too many risks. Young will have to be careful....all signs from Bohl are that TO's are a good way to end up on the bench.

"...mathematical incongruity...salient point..." I like THAT! Couldn't have said it better myself!

I agree. And also, if it's 3rd and 8 and nothing is there, maybe dumping it off and letting the running back try and make one guy miss and pick up the first down for a new set of downs and another opportunity to make that big throw. It's a tough choice for Young right now since he's shown to have a better passing skill set. Maybe he needs to play it a little safer as he gets on the same page with the receivers.

Windows are really small and it may not get executed right at this stage in spring. I know their expecting a lot right now, and it was only the fourth day, but everything will come down to these next two practices and then the first scrimmage to see who the coaches want to lean on the next two weeks.

I would say to Young to take it easy and build a foundation, and take your shots when you have good match ups. I know it's hard to take the dump off, especially if the other guys are doing it frequently. Looks like Young is trying to take advantage of his arm strength to impress. IDK, tough call. I've heard good feedback from my sources on the team as far as his capabilities, but his decisions need to improve and quick.
