And so, are some here ready to stop with the glorification of Larry Shyatt?
Don't misunderstand me, I believe he is a decent coach, knows the game very well, however, I've started to believe he's brought the program as far as he may be able to bring it.
In 5 years just where is the program from a recruiting standpoint?
Sans Larry Nance Jr, where are the difference makers he's brought to Laramie? Where are the shooters? Capable ball handlers?
This offense is a tough watch, man, and my goodness, the predictability of our offensive sets (which never change) make game planning for us a piece of cake for opposing teams.
I'm also skeptical of hearing some claim we have a great defense. As has been mentioned here before, I think much of the statistical minutia surrounding our defense has much to do with our milk it until the last second offense.
Lastly, be careful when criticizing coach Shyatt, as he seems to be pretty prickly about anyone not being satisfied with what his team has accomplished this season.
This is really snapping into focus for me as well. I have found myself wondering in the last few weeks if he's the guy for us. He recruits the same players, undersized, raw talent, projects and none of them have panned out. Cooke can't shoot, Grabau doesn't do anything great, Adams is seemingly regressing, Hankerson blew his load in non conference, Herndon has no killer instinct and no muscle to make his shot (Cooke 2.0), Aka Gorski and Lieberman seem like compliments and not leaders, and Mac is average at best. I see nothing going forward to lead me to believe were going to take that step to the next level. Am I missing something?
Okay. He's recruited better each year. This year far outweighs the last, which far outweighed the one before it. I know you don't fully believe that, but even the ratings on our recruits shows that our recruiting has gotten better year after year.
On top of that we've had zero depth since he's been here. That will happen when the team your taking over completely disbands and goes elsewhere. Nance was a Shyatt recruit, who was not rated, we've seen the progression and stardom that he has accomplished with someone who buys in. Adams is there, and has gotten better. All these teams know what Adams is capable of, based off of what he did last year when Nance was out. Teams hound on him. So he does what anybody does, he takes what the D gives him. Some shots, but when he's covered he finds the open guy.
Now Adams is our only Jr. We have two SO. The rest are Fresh. And I expect most of our Fresh and incoming players are better and have more potential than Grabau, Nance, Bentz, Hank, or Sellers did when when they first got here.
We would be a far cry better aswell if we didn't have multiple players transfer each year, all because they didn't realize that it wasn't about them but an actual team unit. Good luck to those that transferred, but that was the depth that you all continually question where it is.
We've started from ground zero and built year after year. It took Fisher about 7 years before SDSU hit perenial status in the conf. Before that it was year to year of 14-14 to 21-12 to 11-18 back to 16-14.
Finally after year of building and bringing in his recruits, we can see what he's accomplished.
We've had Shy (BACK) for four years and we've seen growth in wins, to top recruits to top 20 wins.
Building a program actually takes time. I know you don't believe it, but if we had Fisher here with his first few years of results, you all would be questioning his job probably even more than you currently are Shyatts.
And then you would've lost what Fisher was capable of building.
I've seen progression in almost every area of this basketball program, and until I see us starting to falter in those same areas, then I say leave it alone. And be happy you have a program on the rise... But isn't quite there yet.
Take it however you want.
