Northern Iowa's Bohannon carries on family's NCAA Tournament legacy

"When I first saw the 5 seed, I was kind of taken aback. I thought they were a 3 or a 4," Zach said. "But once I saw the bracket and how it played out, you couldn't ask for a better three- or four-game draw. Villanova is probably the 1-seed that you want to face and (second-seeded) Virginia is a great matchup."

Already looking past Wyoming to Villanova. I guess UW and Louisville aren't big enough fish for them. I hope we pound a mud hole in them Friday.

To be fair it wasn't Jason who said that it was his older brother Zach who played at Wisconsin that said it.

Klee: Wyoming not supposed to be in NCAA Tournament, and that's a good thing (Gazette.com)

"It's a tremendous story, and he's a tremendous young man," Shyatt said. "Sometimes in this game you have to get a little lucky. We got a little lucky."

It wasn't lucky that assistant coach Allen Edwards spotted Cooke on the juco circuit. Edwards, who played at Kentucky, knows a good player from a bad one. But UW was quite lucky when rival recruiters erroneously identified Cooke as a sophomore.

UW hopes to see long-term financial impact from Cowboys making NCAA Tournament (WyoSports.net)

Another long-term impact could be with the Wyoming Legislature. Sparks said he saw several legislators at UW’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show watch party in Laramie on Sunday, adding they were “grinning ear-to-ear.”

UW athletics has done a lot through the years in facility upgrades and new construction by raising its own money and getting matching funds from the state. The most recent project was the $10 million first phase of the Arena-Auditorium renovation. Funding has been secured for the second phase, which will cost $20 million, and construction begins this spring.

Jack Bentz: NCAA thoughts along the way: Day 3 (WyoSports.net)

Editor’s note: University of Wyoming senior guard Jack Bentz is providing WyoSports with a daily diary of his thoughts as the Cowboys go through the process of preparing for the NCAA Tournament.

After a solid morning practice in Laramie, we loaded up our bus and headed to Laramie Regional Airport. There waiting for us was a huge 737 charter jet, accompanied by some pretty distinguished guests. Gov. Matt Mead, Maury Brown, Tom Burman and Adam Waddell were all on board. That’s not to mention our cheerleaders and other members of the Cowboy Joe and UW athletic administration.

Run to the NCAA Tournament has been special for Shyatt family

“With (my dad), it’s a little different because of our relationship,” Jeremy said. “I think he counts on me not to be a ‘yes’ man, per se. He’s helped me become a better coach, a more well-rounded coach and decision-maker because he has given me a lot of responsibility.

“With that said, I think he can say stuff to me that he probably wouldn’t say to the rest of the staff,” Jeremy added with a laugh. “Conversely, I can say some stuff to him that I couldn’t say to (other guys I’ve worked with) because he’s my dad.”

UW-Northern Iowa men's basketball Q&A with Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register

At 30-3 there hasn't been many times the Panthers have struggled, but when they have, what have teams been able to do to beat them?

If 6-foot-8 senior Seth Tuttle struggles, the Panthers have problems. He was limited against Virginia Commonwealth, and Evansville has a deceptively good defensive player in the post. There have also been times when UNI struggled with quicker guards (Illinois State) who take defenders off the dribble and get to the basket for layups. So, if you’ve got big bodies in the paint, flex your muscle. And if you’ve got a talented point guard, attack.

Former Cowboys see common thread between 2002, 2015 NCAA Tournament teams

In that moment, whether he knew it or not, Nance was paying tribute to Cowboys past.

"He put his 3’s in the holsters," Davis said with a laugh on Monday. "And if you look back at old tape, that was kind of my thing. Some of the similarities are shocking."

“The great thing about the NCAA Tournament is that there’s really no pressure at all," Bailey said. "I think all teams go out there and lay it all out on the line. There’s just a lot of heart that goes into every play of every game.

More Story: Former Cowboys weigh in on current Wyoming team

Marcus Bailey

On the Wyoming fans:

“It’s great to see something like this happen, because the fans are so loyal. We just have the best fan base around, I think. To see them do it the way they did, I feel like they’ve just had such bad luck the last few years.”

Josh Davis

On the similarities between Davis and current Cowboy forward Larry Nance Jr.:

"He’s long, athletic – probably way more athletic than I was. He’s a great player to watch. It is kind of funny, looking out there and seeing the same number and the high socks and everything. It’s like getting flashbacks every once in a while.”

Jr.'s back must be feeling better because he dunked one two-handed. At times this season he looked like he couldn't jump over a lunchbox. This is probably why he's playing better. We were rolling teams early in the season when Jr. was contributing a lot; we need him.

IKR, I saw him dunk and I was like wait is that real I didn't think he could do that because I've never seen him dunk.
