Seattle-bound: Cowboys draw Northern Iowa in NCAA first round (WyoSports.net)

“There’s a lot of great teams in this tournament, and we’re a great team,” said junior guard Josh Adams, the MW Tournament most valuable player.

“Upsets happen every year. Our motto is ‘Why not us?’ We’re capable of winning multiple games in this tournament, and that’s what we’re shooting for.”

“This is Step One for us,” senior forward Derek Cooke Jr. said. “We’ve worked so hard since preseason practices, but it was then that we said that if we wanted to have a successful season, we have to make it to the national tournament – and now we’re here.”

Upset special

No. 12 Wyoming over No. 5 Northern Iowa. First... you might be thinking about picking Belmont to beat Virginia. Don’t do it. Seriously. OK, now onto the actual upset special. This one would wreck brackets across the country, because the Panthers will be a popular pick to upend No. 4 seed Louisville — which is very possible, by the way — and get into a Sweet 16 matchup with (probably) Villanova. But don’t overlook Wyoming. The Cowboys love to play deliberate basketball (their adjusted tempo is 344th in the country), which means playing Northern Iowa won’t be a shock to the system (the Panthers are 348th in adjusted tempo). This game might be a first-to-55-point situation, and anything can happen when points are at a premium in the tournament.

Northern Iowa ready for challenge, familiarity of Wyoming in NCAA 2nd Round

Ben Jacobson has spent plenty of time watching tape of Wyoming basketball for the last few years.

The Northern Iowa coach said he has looked to Larry Shyatt's program in Laramie to study its defensive principles and to borrow strategies to implement in his own system.

NULPH COLUMN: UW's 2015 team bears similarities to 2002 squad

The 2001-02 team went into the Big Dance 21-9, while this year’s team is 25-9.

Both teams featured a star power forward. In 2002, Josh Davis was the engine that drove the Cowboys, like Larry Nance Jr. now.

Both teams also boasted athletic swing men. In 2002, Marcus Bailey didn’t make the same kind of highlight-reel dunks as Josh Adams this season. But Bailey was certainly involved in just about every big shot the Cowboys took – like Adams this year.

Both teams had raw but talented big men – Uche Nsonwu-Amadi in 2002, Derek Cooke Jr. today.

TRAVELING BAND
Vorel: Wyoming needs continued fan support to topple Northern Iowa

Even on Saturday, that notion didn't change. Wyoming met conference powerhouse San Diego State, owners of one of the country's premier student sections, simply dubbed "The Show."

But as the Cowboys hit open shots and piled up defensive stops, the "W-Y-O" chants rained onto the court during timeouts and stoppages in play. Sections of black t-shirts were outliers in an enormous gold ocean.

In the Mountain West championship game, Wyoming was "The Show."

They do know big wins they got Kansas in 2010, so we can't overlook them too much, afterall tho, they've never faced a team like UW neither...lol

5 Bold Predictions For No. 5 Northern Iowa vs. No. 12 Wyoming

4. Larry Nance Jr. Will Put Up 20 Points And 10 Rebounds

Watch for Larry Nance to double-double through the tournament en route to what could be a magical run for the Cowboys. The 6-foot-8 forward became a known commodity during the Mountain West Conference tournament, but after the NCAA tourney, Nance will be a household name.

Des Moines Register: UNI, Wyoming similarities start with coaches

"I had a chance to meet (Shyatt) two or three years ago," Jacobson said. "We spent some time together and have since had an opportunity to really get to know each other."

"I have spent a lot of time watching Wyoming play," Jacobson said. "Simply because they've been one of the best defensive teams in the country.

"When I saw their numbers, I got really interested in watching them play and trying to find some things we could add to our defensive system."

The WYO-Vision crew caught up with Head Coach Larry Shyatt, Larry Nance, Jr., Josh Adams, Riley Grabau & Jason McManamen during Sunday's NCAA Selection Show Watch Party at the Rochelle Gateway Center.

Shyatt: "I've got to tell you, there couldn't have been a Mountain West head coach that wasn't anything but envious seeing all that Brown and Gold all over Vegas."

I love that 5 bold predictions.

Nance going for 20-10 would be AWESOME. UNI doesn't crash the O-glass? HELL YES.
Nance becoming a household name... I love that. I could see it happening.
