Gagliardi column: Winning plays key for Cowboys (WyoSports.net)

Larry Shyatt isn’t a guy who delves too deeply into statistics.

Sure, when the University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach and his staff are formulating a game plan or analyzing their own team, certain stats come into play.

But more than anything, Shyatt likes to talk about “winning plays.” Those could be made baskets, key rebounds, defensive stops or scrambles for loose balls.

Dave Southorn: Wyoming's Larry Nance Jr. back and better than ever (IdahoStatesman.com)

When your home floor sits more than 7,000 feet above sea level, it only seems right to play above the rim.

Laramie, Wyo., is the New Dunk City, and the mayor is senior forward Larry Nance Jr. It's a family tradition - his father played 13 NBA seasons and won the first-ever Slam Dunk Contest in 1984.

Less than a year removed from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Nance has keyed making Wyoming a legitimate Mountain West contender seeking its first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years.

"They have a great system for him, and he's … probably the best player in the league right now," Boise State coach Leon Rice said.

Excerpt from Rival's story:

Boise State Prepares for Dangerous Wyoming

Even though the Broncos are facing some adversity early in league play, team leader Derrick Marks says no one is panicking yet, and he is insistent that the expectations for this team have not changed. "Our goal is to still win the Mountain West, and even though we are off to an 0-2 start, no one's lost faith yet, and I don't think anyone will lose faith." When I asked Derrick what kind of effort it will take to steal a game on the road against Wyoming, he said they are "going to need all 14 players that come with us, we're going to need everyone in our corner to just bring it, and come to play."

After injury scare, Wyoming's Nance is ready for Boise State

He bent down, grimacing, resting his hands on his questionably healthy knees.

Was the comeback just a precursor to another agonizing fall?

"I felt a pop and a twist, and it just freaked me out," Nance said. "I was mentally out of it a little bit."

"He was worried. I could see it on his face," Shyatt said.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming looks to keep rolling against Boise State

REPLACING DRMIC

Boise State also has plenty of experience playing without Drmic in the past. The senior forward missed several games with injury last season as well, including his team's 72-63 road win at Wyoming on March 1.

The Broncos learned how to survive without him as a result.

“[Coach Rice] is very fortunate that he has three guys in the lineup who can go for 20-25 any night. So that helps reduce the loss," Shyatt said. "The other thing that they’ve experienced is that they played many games last year without Anthony. In fact, they beat us here without Anthony last year.

Cowboys return home against formidable Boise State squad (WyoSports.net)

On the surface, it would appear the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team has an advantage in today’s game against Boise State.

The Broncos are without senior guard and leading scorer Anthony Drmic, who is out for the season with an ankle injury. That’s a 1,500-plus points scorer for a team that comes into Laramie having lost two straight in conference play.

But UW coach Larry Shyatt isn’t buying into that.

“They played a lot of games last year without Drmic, so they should have a level of inner confidence that can get them over the hump.”

A 60-54 victory gets Wyo to 14-2, matching Colorado State's mark. Lotta talk on Twitter about the Cowboys being the Mountain West's best now. I'll take San Diego State for sure, but all three of these teams could/should be in the NCAA Tournament.

A hidden delight of a game here. The Mountain West brings the fun at the top of the league with regularity. Can't wait for the return trip; Wyoming hosts CSU on Feb. 4.

Second-half defense, timely shooting push Wyoming past Boise State

On Saturday afternoon, fortune favored the brown and gold.

With 3 minutes and 43 seconds remaining and Wyoming clutching onto a nervous 52-47 lead over Boise State on Saturday inside the Arena-Auditorium, senior guard Charles Hankerson Jr. barreled into the lane, swarmed by a herd of Broncos as the shot clock continued to bleed.

As he brought the ball up for a shot, it was knocked out of Hankerson's hands and caromed fatefully into the waiting grasp of redshirt freshman forward Alan Herndon, who was stationed in the corner, just beyond the arc.
