Wyoming's Nance leaves no doubt in first game after injury scare

Larry Nance Jr. left no doubt.

Entering Wyoming's conference game against Boise State on Saturday, it would have been reasonable for Nance's teammates and fans to wonder if the player who stepped on the Arena-Auditorium court at 4 p.m. would be the same one that hobbled up and down for large stretches of Wednesday's Border War.

Nance had received a scare, tweaking the same right knee that had been shredded late last season, then surgically repaired. Few could blame him for his tentativeness, for his well-deserved concern.

Watching the highlights it really seemed like today was the Larry Nance show.

He is definitely making a strong case for MWC POY. Along with Adams making a case for 1st or 2nd team All-MWC.

Second-half surge lifts Cowboys to seventh-straight victory (WyoSports.net)

A big part of the game plan was to defend Boise State’s perimeter shooters.

It took the University of Wyoming men’s basketball team a half to truly get that right.

But in the second half, UW played much better defensively and got offensive sparks from a number of players in a 65-54 victory in front of 7,024 fans at the Arena-Auditorium on Saturday.

“I thought our guys didn’t focus on the scouting report they’ve been so good at in past,” coach Larry Shyatt said. “Yes, (Boise State) made some shots, but there were breakdowns that didn’t have to happen.”

Herndon beefs up Cowboys' offense (WyoSports.net)

University of Wyoming redshirt freshman forward Alan Herndon added 20 pounds of muscle last year and was described by coach Larry Shyatt as “less thin” before the season.

At 6-foot-9, Herndon is listed at 205 pounds, but he dropped below 200 prior to Christmas after a bout with acid reflux that prevented him from eating anything substantial for a few days.

Herndon lost about 14 pounds during that time, but since he felt better, he’s played a big role in UW’s 4-0 start in Mountain West play.

In battle of similar styles, Wyoming prepares for San Diego State

"I don’t think that physical confrontation and bullying is always what I want our players to define as toughness," Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said. "I think toughness sometimes is a level of self-discipline. What shots should I take? What pass should I make as we come down the home stretch? Who can we get the ball to so we can get fouled properly?

"That’s more mental toughness, and I think our team has shown a level of consistency there over the course of these 17 games.”
