Wyoming’s Nance tough challenge for UNLV in league opener

“We can do it. I definitely feel we can win the conference,” Vaughn said.

The race to the top of the mountain is led by defending champion San Diego State and includes Colorado State, UNLV and Wyoming. Those four are the leading contenders, and there’s not much separation. The unbeaten Rams are the league’s only ranked team at No. 24.

“We always talk about it, but it’s absolutely wide open this year with a lot of good teams,” said coach Dave Rice, whose Rebels finished 10-8 and tied for third in MW play last year.

Taylor Bern: Don’t expect UNLV’s New Year’s Eve plans at Wyoming to be pretty

Limping and wincing from a first-half ankle injury, Wyoming’s Larry Nance Jr. did everything he could the last time he met the UNLV basketball team. Nance hobbled his way to 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in a 48-46 loss, the Rebels’ lowest-scoring victory since 2009.

“I can already submit my (all-conference) ballot and put Nance on the ballot,” Rice said after the game on Feb. 8. “He’ll be in the NBA in a couple of years.”

Both are starters (25-26 min/game). Okonoboh=good shot blocker. Neither are big offensive threats. Both are horrible FT shooters.

Wyoming rides Nance, late free throws to exhilirating win over UNLV

On a night where Wyoming needed the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year to act like it, Nance delivered. He mercilessly pummeled the Runnin' Rebels with jumpers and hook shots, and even threw down a mammoth one-handed dunk over 6-11 forward Christian Wood.

After scoring 31 points in Wyoming's victory at Montana State on Dec. 23, Nance followed that up with 29 points, five rebounds and three blocks on Wednesday.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming 76, UNLV 71

SALUTING THE CROWD

The "Dome of Doom" certainly earned its nickname on Wednesday night, as the 6,011 fans in attendance seemingly willed the Cowboys to victory.

After the game, Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt was quick to acknowledge the fans.

"I think it's only right that I start with the most important piece, that is to thank the people that came tonight on New Year's Eve," Shyatt said. "I've got to tell you, when we needed energy, the people in the building gave us energy tonight. I believe that with all my heart."

Rebels like almost everything except the result in close loss at Wyoming (Las Vegas Sun)

Wyoming adjusted to Wood’s blistering start, though he was still able to pile up a career-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting plus seven rebounds with six turnovers. Cowboys senior Larry Nance was a big part of the defensive improvement and he matched Wood for every point at the other end, scoring 29 on 11-of-17 shooting.

“He killed us,” Wood said of Nance.

“He’s such a physical player,” Rice said. “He does a great job of dislodging the defensive player and making space for himself.”
