12.31.14 Men's Basketball vs. UNLV Highlights (WYO-VISON)

Highlights from the Pokes 76-71 win over UNLV on New Year's Eve. Larry Nance, Jr. led the way with 29 points while Derek Cooke, Jr. chipped in with 14.

This game against UNLV showed me something about the Pokes. We kept getting ready to pull away then UNLV would hit a 3. That happened a lot. I'm not saying we blow them out if they weren't so hot, I'm saying it's a more comfortable lead in the final few minutes.

UNLV hit 10 3-pointers. If they even miss a couple of those it's an entirely different game. The Pokes held in there though, they kept responding when we needed them to for the win.

UNLV played as well as they've played in any game this year, Arizona included, and it wasn't good enough. I love this Wyoming team.

I agree. They were playing out of their minds. How often do they shoot 50% from three on over 20 attempts?

3. Larry Nance Jr. would be a major factor in any conference in America

Smooth, skilled and always under control, the versatile forward is on a tear for the Cowboys, who are looking more and more like a legitimate threat to win the Mountain West Conference. Nance has made 20 of 31 field goals over his last two games and is averaging 30.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks during that span. Blessed with great size at 6-8 along with an unbelievable feel for the game, Nance is an effortless passer who can dominate a game without it ever feeling like he's forcing things. Despite missing the second half of last season with an ACL tear, the senior power forward looks like he's back in vintage form and his profile will only continue to rise as Wyoming becomes more of a factor nationally. Normally only players from UNLV, San Diego State or New Mexico get individual recognition for their efforts when people are highlighting players from the Mountain West but more and more people will understand just how good Nance is as this season progresses.

Especially against a defense like Wyoming's. They had a few open looks, but for the most part I feel like teams have a tough time knocking down semi-open looks against us because there's so much pressure to score on each possession. We have a pretty high efficiency offense, and baskets against us come at a premium. Pair that with the reduced number of possessions per game, and the pressure of each possession seems to shrink the basket for opposing teams.

You can color me impressed with how UNLV played against us on Wednesday, but having said that, I'm walking away even more impressed with Wyoming than I was before...and I'm VERY high on this team. I absolutely expect a win in Fort Collins next week.

I think early on we made a decision to play off of Wood knowing that he was too quick off the bounce for Nance at this point (which was exploited a little bit later on after he forced us to adjust). Before the game Wood was 6-26 from 3, including 2-2 in the previous game against a really bad team (SUU). He had been 4-24 against legit competition, so going into the game I am sure we thought that Wood jacking 3's in a road game in a venue he had never played before would be better for us than him taking it to the rim or putting the ball in the hands of Vaughn who we would struggle to contain. To Wood's credit, he made us pay big time.

That makes this win even more impressive. Wood is a great player, but he is not going to hit from the perimeter at that pace in most games. The fact that we overcame that to beat them is a great sign.

The Pokes got back to doing what they were early in the year with good cuts and ball movement to generate a lot of quality looks.

I do think Nance looks more comfortable. He still looks limited athletically a little bit compared to last year (you can see it statistically in his rebounding and block rate, but I notice it more via the "eye test" when you see him to try to close out on Wood or crash the glass. Just not as quick laterally or with his second jump), but he is back to being very comfortable in the mid range. If Nance is going to hit that mid-range jumper than he is impossible to defend without help. I don't think there is any big man in the MWC that can score in the same variety of ways that Nance can.

UNLV has a lot of size and athleticism in the front court and they made the decision to play Nance straight up. He burned them, so I can't imagine anyone other than SDSU making the same call. Expect to see double teams and some zone to try to neutralize Nance. Grabau, Hankerson, Adams, and McManamen will have quality looks from the perimeter. Have to knock them down.

Wyoming looking inward against struggling San Jose State

Wyoming may not recognize its enemy, but the goal is all too familiar.

“Every game is crucial," Hankerson said. "Coach Shyatt was just saying how literally every conference game is essential to what we’re trying to do in the future. If we drop one, that’s a huge game.

"We’re taking every game serious and focusing on every opportunity.”

Did they even have a #SCTop10 for Wednesday night?

Cowboys focused on themselves heading into game at San Jose State (WyoSports.net)

“We need to worry about what we can do to make ourselves better for this game,” senior forward Larry Nance Jr. said. “We’re not necessarily worried about who’s there or who’s not there. If we play our game, we will be successful.”

“There definitely were some (defensive) lapses in the first and second halves against UNLV,” junior guard Josh Adams said. “There are little tweaks we can make, and we will make. We will be just fine on that end.

“Coming off a big win over UNLV, we realize the potential of this team, and every conference game is important from top to bottom. You have to win as many games as you can. This game is just as important as the UNLV game.”

SHORTHANDED SPARTANS ADD HELP
The Spartans made two additions to the lineup before the December 13 contest versus Seattle U. Andrew Vollert and Tyler Winston, two letterwinners on the SJSU football team, suited up and played 30 and 21 minutes respectively. Vollert will remain with the team on a game-by-game basis. Winston will not play again. The additions were made to help counter season-ending injuries to Jalen James and Leon Bahner as well as the indefinite suspension of: Rashad Muhammad, Jordan Baker, Frank Rogers, Jaleel Williams and Matt Pollard, for violating a team rule.

Adams provides spark for Cowboys at any time

“Josh is one of the most athletic people I’ve ever been or around and played with,” senior forward Larry Nance Jr. said. “When you have someone like him that is a spark plug, it’s fun to sit back in awe and watch. He definitely brings energy, whether it’s coming off bench or whenever. He’s just a fireball of energy, and I’m glad we have him.”

No problem. I usually have 6-8 different websites pulled up at any one time (financial/investment, sports, Twitter, etc.), so I'm able to catch the Pokes-related stuff fairly quickly. The forum software used by WyoNation really adds color to the information flow by easily allowing embedded tweets and youtube videos. Beats the crap out of a lot of message boards. Thanks for the comments. Just trying to keep the interest flowing. I see good things ahead for UW's athletics programs.
