Gagliardi column: Maturity, preparation on side of Cowboys (WyoSports.net)

“We were kind of veterans last year with some older guys, but now we’re obviously a year older, a year smarter, a year stronger,” Nance added.

Junior guard Josh Adams chimed in, “We have another year together.”

Senior guard Charles Hankerson Jr. added: “This is a special group that believes in ourselves.”

“This group has level of seriousness when it comes to preparing for games,” Shyatt said. “Learning how to prepare is a process, and our young guys have caught onto that because of our older guys.

Behind Enemy Lines:

Basketball practice report: Larry Brown talks Wyoming (Adam Grosbard)

• Brown spoke about the Wyoming game on Friday. "They're 7-0, really well-coached, a veteran team. Anyone that can beat Colorado the way they did, you better beware. They're just real solid and I don't think you go 7-0 unless you have good players and good coaches."

• Sterling Brown also talked about the challenge that Wyoming presents. "They bring just a real quality team. They run the clock, they run their stuff and they don't take bad shots so we're going to have to play really good defense," Brown said. In particular, Brown and his teammates will need to focus in on talented scorer Larry Nance, Jr. "(SMU needs to) pressure the ball so it's difficult to get it into him and when he does get, just dig in and try to steal. Just stick to our principles really."

• Justin Martin practiced with the team on Wednesday, albeit with a brace around his right knee. He was not moving at full-speed but was able to put some stress on the knee. There is still no word on whether or not he will be able to play against Wyoming.

Wyoming bench prepares for first true road test at SMU

But how will so many first-time players react to a hostile crowd?

“I feel like when you’re on the court you just block everything out," Aka Gorski said with a shrug. "It’s five against five. It’s just like practice.”

“I definitely feel comfortable," Herndon said. "The first game, I had the butterflies and everything. Now, every game I’m just ready to play. I’m just blessed to have this opportunity.

"Now, I just love playing. The nerves are gone. It’s just, where’s the next competition? Where’s the next battle going to come from?”

I love seeing all these comments about freshman and sophomore players, hell and the high schoolers we got.

I think Herndon is going to be a freak in a season or two.
Same for Barnes.

Can we keep getting quality big men? Or do we get semi-quality, semi-big men and redshirt, and develop the hell out of them so when they are sophomores, juniors, and seniors they are elite?

With the way we are recruiting, if we keep winning, do we have a chance at landing a Top 25 class within the next 5 years?

Cowboys to face tough road-opener at SMU (WyoSports.net)

Four of SMU’s five starters are double-digit scorers, and it has held teams to about 65 points per game. The Mustangs also added two Division I transfers in 6-6 senior guard Justin Martin from Xavier and 6-6 sophomore guard Ben Emelogu, who combine to average 11.6 points per game.

“I’ve seen a lot of experience, and the two transfers not only gives them more strength and depth, but it seemingly makes them an even better defensive team — and they were awfully good before,” Shyatt said.

“They seem every bit as good, if not better, than they were last year.”

Game Preview: SMU vs. Wyoming

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Ben Moore vs. Larry Nance Jr.: Moore will have his hands full Friday night when he’s tasked with guarding the Cowboys’ best player in Nance. Nance has some size, about 25 pounds, on Moore, so staying out of foul trouble and playing physical defense will be key for the Mustangs’ sophomore. This is also a perfect game for Moore to break out of his 5-game streak of poor play. Moore will get pushed around some, but the key for him is not backing down on the offensive side of the ball. If Moore gets his confidence up on the defensive side of the ball, his offensive game should follow.

Be sure to check out this game for one of three reasons tonight. The first is to see whether or not Larry Nance, Jr and the Wyoming Cowboys can pass their first road test of the season. The second is to see how well SMU plays in another tough contest, and how well they play with Martin back in the mix. The third reason is a simple one: this game is going to be a great contest from start to finish!
