With Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas in the tank I don't think

this will happen, but UW just prepared a request to increase athletics budget funding by a total of 5 million a YEAR. That's a permanent increase in the budget and with our current state revenue projections, I just can't see this happening.

It would be great for UW athletics if it did.

Preaching to the choir here, but at most places investments in athletics end up paying for themselves.

There's no question we need it, especially after the Sternberg review and the reality that we're grossly under-funded at athletics to compete in the MWC. One title in twelve years is a damn joke.

Still, I don't think it's going to happen as long as the Saudis continue to flood the market with oil, Obama continues to fuck anyone in the United States that wants to work and get paid instead of drawing unemployment, and the price of natural gas waits for the nattie gas export facilities in Oregon to get built.

Word is that the state revenue projections are going to be fairly grim...and it's unlikely with this legislature, even if the revenue is even slightly off, that UW is going to get any big increases. It's probably equally likely that UW will get a budget cut.

Yep. The only thing that saved us last time was the investment income generated by the states stock portfolio. We had better hope like hell that it does well.

I don't know how the state defines a "rainy day", but with the three biggest cash cows in Wyoming taking a federal beating from Obama and the liberals, it seems like we've reached a "rainy day".

Our biggest problem is that we rely too heavily on states funds for our athletic budget. Most universities receive only a small percentage of their budget from the state. The vast majority for them is from student fees, ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, private donations, merchandise, etc.

Not sure how much of this we can generate given our populace and general rural setting, but more improvement needs to be done here as opposed to hoping the state will shell out more coin.

Pretty much this 100% Boise is a prime example with Taco Bell Arena. Instead we sell floor naming rights for a donation. Sure that money helps but not near as much if they actually did something like get a corporation involved.

Hold the phone Nancy. This makes it sound like the budget already has increased by 5 and the new request is for another 5.

Either way, it sounds like we're making progress on the budget. I think this 5 million was approved in the last session.

From the article,

"With the help of the state legislature and the university booster club, the Cowboy Joe Club, UW’s budget is expected to increase by more than $5 million this year, which would mark the largest single-year bump in school history."

State approved $5M in matching funds for one fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. UW is requesting that the state approve the same $5M in matching funds for another two fiscal years after that.

Paycheck to paycheck. Legislature would hate to commit long term money on anything

These two things together...exactly.

The legislature generously gives $5M....for one year. Well, you can certainly do good things with that money, but what exactly can you do? You can bank some of it. You can buy stuff, certainly. You can increase spending on what you do that year...recruiting expenses, for example.

But. You can't commit to any recurring expense. You can't use it for raises to keep/attract coaches, certainly. You can't promise a program that they'll have that recruiting money next year. Etc., etc.

It has created a very strange planning/budgeting/operational situation.

I find it completely hilarious that the WYOMING fans are hoping that the state government helps out the cause ...

If this situation is going to fix itself, it's because WYOMING FANS fix it.

I'm not going to throw stones - life/money has gotten in the way and I haven't been able to attend any games recently. And I FULLY ADMIT that I am part of the problem.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO GO TO THE GAMES.

If you consider yourself a hardcore 'Wyoming fan' - than you need to make AT LEAST one football game and one basketball game per year. Or you donate to CJC. Or you pay for some kid to go check out a game.

Otherwise, you're just a guy who follows Wyoming - and frankly, that's what I've been the past few years.

The push needs to be for everyone to make AT LEAST one game per year. Yes, season tickets are awesome - but unless you have the time and means, or you live in Laramie/Cheyenne, it's a severe time commitment.

One game? Yeah, I can figure that out - and I think just about everyone else who wears the brown and gold can figure that out, too.

the saudais think the US is flooding the world with oil. We are the ones who have greatly increased producttion while they remained flat for production. us has flooded its own natural gas market which in turn crushed coal prices.

It's nearly impossible for me to make games being in Arizona but I'll go to MWC Tournaments and any Bowl Games in the area and continue to support the team by donating.

If I ever move back to Wyoming again I'll move to Laramie but the weather is probably always going to keep me away.

I love the POKES and realize we have some budget constraints. I do think we need more funding all the way around at UW.

In my opinion, our leadership needs to do a better job of selling it through actual facts and figures. Give the legislature something they can tell their voters. Example "investing 5 million in WYO athletics results in x million in return to the University which in turn decreases the amount of money the state spends on the University. In other words, we are saving money by investing in athletics"

Now, if that investment doesn't return anything at all, then I understand the legislature's hesitation to provide it annually. It is up to UW leadership to clearly outline how that investment saves money and increases UW's profile. Then, it is up to the leadership to sell it to the state and the legislature.

My apologies of they have done this and I haven't seen it.

Don't forget the Iran nuke deal will mean Iran will begin selling its oil. Probably not the U.S., but to European markets. More oil flooding the economy means lower prices, of course, for the foreseeable future. Gas will probably get down to the $2/gallon mark again this winter, if not less.

Might even go below $1 here in Oklahoma this winter. Right now, gas is around the $2 mark here.

Damn the weather is nice here in the summer, though. Today for example, absolutely perfect.

July in Laramie is like December in Arizona :) I remember the first year I lived here going outside at 3am in November to have a smoke and it was 60ish outside. I hate cold weather and snow but I love sun.
