We have a new President

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise we got a provost as a new President instead of a foundation executive.

No surprise at all. It's standard. Folks move up the ranks to provost, then a presidency. Our last four presidents were provosts.

OK fair enough. One of them has moved up in the world since being UW president. Two retired. One was run out of town. The one that moved up has this to say about his time at UW :

"In 1997, Dubois was named president of the University of Wyoming. In that role, he led the development of comprehensive academic, support services, and capital construction plans for the campus; stimulated a growing volume of new capital construction projects and building renovations; expanded UW's role in statewide economic development; and improved the recruitment and retention of students. During his eight-year tenure, state and federal legislative support increased significantly, while private gifts to the university more than quadrupled. He was honored in 2004 by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with its District VI Chief Executive Leadership Award."

A guy like that would not want this post right now.

"A guy like that..." would be looking for exactly this kind of opportunity, provided he felt the BOT (his bosses) reflected high horizons for what is possible. Right now, UW is saddled with people on an unaccountable board who appear to have much higher priorities than their roles as trustees, and/ or all the ambition, courage, and vision of a French Capitulation Officer.

I get the unaccountable thing, or at least I think I do. You're talking about them being unelected? I might come down on the other side of that one...as I picture about 7 Cindy Hills turning UW into a community college.

Why would he go for this job, in a state with declining revenues who will be cutting your budgets, and where the major donors will also be losing revenue and therefore cutting their contributions? Maybe if he thinks it's a buy low sell high situation, banking on a near term recovery in commodities and energy.

Where is Tracy Ringolsby this time? He sure hasn't when Sternberg was hire but I guess he is ok with this kind of hire?

Whoever was disappointed with our new pres having only an education background - I agree. It would be nice to get a business-oriented president.

He will surface after she takes office (and a few months of results after that) to form his opinion. :D
