Not only a sad day for The University Of Wyoming and the entire state -- but an awfully pathetic and embarrassing spectacle as well.
This to me is a clear case of 'new blood' coming onto the scene, rattling some cages, creating some discomfort where 'comfort' had become the norm (for apparently the last 25 years)...and in the end, the status quo stomped their feet and held their breath long enough for Mr Sternberg to say; 'I'm out of here'.
I was fortunate to meet Mr. Sternberg briefly this past Saturday evening at The War.
After a brief on field ceremony that he took part in, I was able to shake his hand as he came off the field, and I told him to not let the bastards get him down, that we all had his back, and we loved his vision for creating a winning and consistent sports program in Laramie.
This news today is dispiriting yes ---> but the additional bad news and negativity that I will expect to come onto the scene soon enough --- is going to make today's (yesterday's) event seem like someone's birthday party when all the dust settles and the smoke clears.
Bring the 'Good-Enoughers' back onto the scene!
Watch out, Mike Vorel, a non staus quo reporter who has brought about much needed objectivity and clarity into his reporting with the CST since he's been here...they might run you out of town next, Mike!
My advice to Vorel is to quickly readjust his stance...make sure you begin cheerleading with your stories like the delusional Scott Nulph does in the WTE ('Wyoming is an average football team') or be prepared to be blackballed right out of town.
Here was a man in Sternberg who arrives onto the scene and wants Wyoming to be the best -- and if not the best, then to die trying.
Gee, what a novel concept...the room had become really complacent the last quarter of a century, lets see if we might all be able to raise our games and become something substantial?
Nah!!!
Why do that, the Good-Enoughers said...we're awfully cozy here in Laramie with the way things have been. How DARE YOU come in here and attempt to ruin out comfy-cozy existence!!!
In all I read and viewed it appeared he (Sternberg) wanted the very best for Wyoming not only in Athletics, but in all things across the campus.
Let this be a warning to anyone else...that if you come to the Cowboy State with anything considered to be innovative from an idea standpoint, that you keep those feelings to yourself...or else.
I've also found that most of the media here operate with the same Stepford Wives mentality that the status quo operators in Laramie employ...the media too, in my opinion, is guilty of falling into a marching line of not expecting too much from Wyoming football and basketball.
While in Fort Collins the ambition apparently has no ceiling, here in the Cowboy State, mediocrity is clearly acceptable.
Sorry that Mr. Sternberg hurt one too many feelings.
Sorry that Mr. Sternberg was far-far too ambitious.
Sorry that Mr. Sternberg wanted Wyoming to be the very best - or to die in the process of trying.
Unlike the status quo operators, Mr. Sternberg apparently knew who he was.
Rather I think, he knew who he was not?
He wasn't someone who felt that the same old same old was good enough.
If this was going to be the prevailing mentality...then obviously Mr. Sternberg refused to drop his own personal and professional standards to fit in with the merry band of clueless dopes who reside in the town of Mediocre, USA.
In other words, Laramie, Wyoming.
Oh yeah...before I close this out.
Go Pokes?
