The key to success

I mentioned this summer that two numbers had to change in order for this team to be successful: 3rd down offense and 3rd down defense

Offense
2015 - .333 (113th)
2016 - .420 (T-58th)

Defense
2015 - .456 (112th)
2016 - .425 (91st)

Any other numbers stand out to you as the key to our turnaround?

Red zone scoring. Off my head from the game stat. We're like 90% as opposed to 70% last year. I'll look it up real quick. Has a lot to do with having a kicker making all the short kicks

90% this year to 60.54% last year

27 for 30 with 22 TDs and 5 FGs

2015 we were 24 for 39 with 22TDs and 2 FGs

WOW!!!

But then again, couldn't be in the red zone if they didn't improve on 3rd downs...

How about on defense? These two stand out:
-Cut almost 85 yards from the rushing defense's average.
-Turnover margin: from 113th to 24th.

That's it for me. As soon as I saw our defensive tackles weren't getting blown five yards off the line every play, I knew we had a chance to be pretty good.

On top of that, how about the jump in scoring offense from 19 ppg (115th) to 33.9 ppg (37th).

Not yet mentioned key to success:

Russell Dennison.

I'm guessing he and the rest of the staff are about to get a big fat raise, but he might be the single most responsible man for the turn around of Wyoming football.

War Daddy my ass.

Another improvement is penalties.

Last year we were called for 6.25 penalties (71st) for 56.75 yards (74th) per game.
This year, those numbers down to 4.75 penalties (T-16th) for 45.63 yards (24th) per game.

Seems small, but pretty big difference in one year.

One of the players mentioned this week how big of a difference he made this summer.

That too. Other than a few exceptions, our guys got manhandled on every front the previous 2 years. Now? Both lines are worlds better. In 1 year. As a whole, the team is far more complete than, well, in a LONG time.

Not being constantly overmatched physically means you don't have to take penalties as much to not get overwhelmed. Do they have a breakdown of how many of each type of penalty we had?

I don't have the numbers to compare, but it seems like this team is consistently winning the field position battle. A staple of Bohl's approach.

And moving the ball on teams we struggled to in previous years.

The thing is that there is so much improvement going on across the whole team very quickly, that many of the stats are skewed.

How is that skewed? Wouldn't huge improvement be more accurate?

Maybe I used the wrong word. We have played 8 games, and what I was trying to say is the stats from the last 4 games are probably much better than the first 4 games because we have improved so much.
