Tarleton State - MWC Target

Sensibility is prevailing. Tarleton makes zero sense. If Texas State and NDSU don’t want to come (as has been reporte), add Hawaii for all sports and call it good. Don’t water down this conference with teams that will eventually cause others to leave.

This is great news IMO. I also think that NDSU would come to the MWC, but wonder if the question has been asked. Thanks for the share!

It was reported NDSU doesn’t want to move to the MWC? Didn’t know they were interested
It’s been reported by a few MWC media personalities that NDSU hasn’t expressed an interest in moving to FBS/MWC. They must like being the big fish in an ever smaller pond.

I read something last night that the Montana and Dakota schools can't afford to move up since it involves adding FB scholarships, and at least for the Griz, adding another women's sport. I think that Cats would have to offer another men's sport.. to meet Title IX requirements. Not sure what the Dakota schools would have to do aside from adding FB scholarships. Facilities and UM and Bozeman St are prob on par with a lot of MW schools.

IMO, prerequisite for any addition is that they play football as it is intended. *see MT & MSU

Tarleton gets us into the heart of Texas and the central time zone. They are 1:30 or so from Fort Worth. They would have built in rivalries with the Miners and Lobos. They draw better than most of the remaining 8 and are building a new basketball arena. ( A big issue for Tarleton is that the need to at least double their athletic budget.)

Sacramento has a huge population with only one pro team. The would have built -in rivalries with SJSU and Nevada. They are building a new stadium and the Kings are going to let them play in the arena. They've already raised $35M. (One issue is that a lot of the money pledges are based on getting a Pac-12 bid, not MW - not sure how that will affect things.)

Tarleton has no rivalries. They were Division 2 just 4 years ago. And not even a good Division 2 team. They've never had a great football program at any level. They would significantly devalue the brand from day one just to be in the same conference with a "who."

Sacramento State also has no rivalries with any MWC teams. They might have money committed but they would also significantly devalue the brand from day one due to lack of name recognition. But they are a much better add than Tarleton that's for sure. At least they have been in Division 1 for quite some time.

Luckily - Hawaii all sports is taking shape and neither of these adds are likely.

I read earlier today that Sac St's own feasibility study said they should go to the Mountain West rather than PAC2/6/whatever.

Hawaii games are on average the most bet on college football games every week. There is some argument that you manage to get some television viewership out of this if you were creative enough with all the gambling going on now.

Still not sure I see UNLV making it much past a couple of years. They will get $12 million immediately. THen the tv deal gets redone. I don't see that being enough to keep them interested.

They signed a GOR through 2031. They aren’t leaving to the PAC before then. But their deal gives them a get out of jail free card if a P4 conference comes calling.

I guess Texas state would like to make $750k instead
They are holding out for an AAC defection and an AAC invite. This result is actually fine for the MWC because Texas State isn't that great and is basically another mouth to feed (just the best FBS option realistically available to the MWC right now).

I thought they were the target because they are a huge school in a hugely populated area that can actually increase the media payout (or at least not decrease it). Pretty much the only such school realistically available to us

They were the target because they made the most sense of the FBS teams realistically available to get the required 8 full conference members. They don't increase media payout.

That could end up being a blessing. Schedule 1 P4 money game per year, and a P4 2-1 mixed in. Then an FCS, and one or two G6 against the MAC or AAC.
The PAC will be in the same boat. I bet CSU becomes an annual game leaving the same 4 open dates for Wyoming. So no real extra openings for us.
