Summer Hoops Notes and Pics

Question: What is Afam doing in Laramie/UW? Lol...I think it's totally random. Are him and Brandon Ewing just working in Laramie, living the life, and being involved with the UW hoops program as much as possible?
If so...I'm jealous.

Brandon has a few things going on...he runs his non-profit which provides food and scholarships to needy families in Denver and Wyoming, and he runs basketball camps.

check out onceacowboy.org My wife and I just signed up to help fund some thanksgiving meals for folks in Wyoming through Brandon's foundation.

Austin Conway (2015 UW commit), along with LaDarius Thomas and Justin Bassey (2016 offers) have been selected to play in the "Top Twenty" game of the Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase on October 4th. Elijah Coleman will play in the "Junior" game. A few Wyoming HS kids sprinkled throughout (see .pdf link below).

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming hoops gears up for new season

FRESHMAN CLASS

Junior guard Josh Adams didn't hesitate to dub Wyoming's current freshman class "the best group of freshmen since I’ve been here.”

It will certainly be interesting to see who among guards Jeremy Lieberman and Alexander Aka Gorski and forwards Jonathan Barnes, Tyrell Williams and Diontae Jones will be able to contribute right away for the Pokes.

But thus far, impressions have been positive. In fact, head coach Larry Shyatt said he recently met with each of the freshmen individually to talk about their progress throughout the summer and discuss their roles moving forward.

“Sunday afternoon, I met with all five of them off the court and just talked about how proud I am up to this point,” Shyatt said.

Austin is smooth on those pull up jumpers. Ball just floats out of his hand. Need that jump shot threat. Great addition

Battle for the Rankings – Class of 2015

Nearly 150 participants descended upon St. Thomas University in Miami to participate in “The Battle for the Rankings” this weekend. This report will focus on the better players in the senior class and later reports will look at the underclassmen that stood out over a two day period.

Justin James: The 6’7 wing out of Oldsmar Christian was arguably the top performer in the senior class at the event. Committed to the University of Wyoming, James’ versatility really stood out. He has the ball skills of a point guard as he changes direction quickly, protects the ball from pressure, and delivers catchable passes on target. When James decided to head to the rim to score, he finished with either hand thru contact in traffic. In an up-tempo environment such as this one, James didn’t have to shoot the ball from distance much but when he did he was reasonably accurate. Maybe the most impressive part of his play was at the defensive end. James anticipates well and is quick to react to movements of the basketball. His length and foot speed allow him to cover a lot of ground quickly and create turnovers.

Andrew Moemeka: This 6’8 long and bouncy athlete is now at Oldsmar Christian. Another Wyoming recruit, Moemeka’s energy and athleticism are the keys to his success. He is fast in transition, has the ability to finish above the rim and is very quick off of his feet for tip dunks on offensive rebounds. As a post defender he lacks heft so he isn’t a straight up shot blocker when defending down there. When Momeka gets the chance to help out that is when he becomes a potent rim defender. Because of his quick leap and long arms, Moemeka is able to rebound out of his area on a regular basis. We’ve seen him make shots out to fifteen feet in the past but that wasn’t on display this weekend. If Moemeka is able to step out and score from the high post and short corner areas, he becomes a very potent weapon.
