Summer Hoops Notes and Pics

What happens when a Larry Nance Jr or Josh Adams or any of the new guys make it to the NBA and give Wyo a big donation in the future?
We already have the nicest facility coming to Laramie, what else could be done?

Let's put a glass dome on the AA so we can look at the night sky during games.

+1000

Nothing like getting comfy in the AA when it is snowing outside.

Look up and see the gentle snowfall while Wyo is beating the hell out of San Diego State.

Ladarius Thomas and Elijah Coleman in the house.......

Question: What is Afam doing in Laramie/UW? Lol...I think it's totally random. Are him and Brandon Ewing just working in Laramie, living the life, and being involved with the UW hoops program as much as possible?
If so...I'm jealous.

Just from twitter, it looks like he will be playing in Spain this winter and is just in Laramie to get in some workouts and visits prior to his season. Hope it works out for him. He has has been through a lot with the injuries.

Yeah thats how I took it too. I also know at one point Ewing decided to go back to Europe and play and was traing getting ready for that. But he has been in LAramie for a couple years doing different things. Setting up a non-profit/scholarship program"once a cowboy" and starting a clothing line. Afam and Ewing are two class individuals.

I really hope DC has improved in two areas.
1- FREE THROWS. Which by that picture looks like he is at least practicing them.
2- Being able to play consistently without Larry in there to draw attention away.

But I really think the first one is more important than the second.
If DC can hit free throws, we win more games. Simple as that.
There will be situations where we could extend a last minute lead to unreachable status, there's games where we could take the lead, and there's situations where his free throws could keep us in striking distance.
Not to mention the 3-8 points that would add up throughout the game.
Game changer right there.

If DC can be more dominant without Larry on the court, that could help in a close game with Larry fouled out or in foul trouble.

Say Larry picks up 3 fouls in the first half. DC needs to go about 10 minutes in the second half with Larry on the bench with solid production or else we become an all guard lineup trying to get lucky with 3's.

DC having a big year could be big to our success.

I was shooting on the same hoop as him at half acre earlier this year. It was only once, and for a limited amount of time, but he was knocking down threes and jump shots from around the floor. Everything I saw looked very positive. His mechanics aren't perfect, but they are smoother than they were last year. That should lead to a respectable free throw percentage.

Beaver, I would add that if he improves his free throw shooting, we can keep him (along with his freakish athletic abilities) on the floor when we have a 3 point lead with 90 seconds to go. We need his ability to gather rebounds and block/change shots down the stretch. With his current free throw abilities, Cooke grabbing a rebound down the stretch is as good as a turnover for Wyoming.

Nance and Adams are optimistic about the squad this year partly because they feel the other veterans and redshirts have taken the next step. Things have "clicked" for them, so to speak.

Derek can really help the team this year, if:

1) He can raise his FT% from about 45% to 60%.
2) He can try to keep more of his blocked shots in play. Sending a statement by swatting a shot into the third row is cool when you're up by double digits, but don't let the opponent off the hook by giving them the ball back in a close game.

Those are just a couple of things I'd be very happy to see out of Derek this year.

From my perspective, the biggest opportunity for DC to make a bigger impact is to no longer be scared of going to the line. You could tell from his body language at times over the past two years that he doesn't want to go to the line. I think it affects his aggressiveness around the rim. If he has the ball in his possession near the basket I want him going up strong with it. He also showed the ability against slower defenders to take one dribble and take it to the rim. Nothing fancy, and certainly won't be a primary option, but if he can make defenders pay for being slow to rotate back to him, it really opens things up for Larry.

Great point, I didn't even think of that.
It is very easy to just focus on the offense we get from him being able to knock down free throws and easy to not even think about the defense we would be getting from him in there.

Man, I am getting freaking stoked right now. We have had so many close games where it went to OT or we barely lost by one possession. DC makes free throws we can win those. Derek Cook by no means cost us 3 losses last season, but at the same time, we "could" have had 3 more wins if he was a better shooter. Not to mention the improved play by everyone else we have returning.

Is Sellers still on the team? I can't remember if he is or not. If he is, that will help DC and Larry even more.
