A great honor has come to a former Wyoming football coach. It was announced today that William H. "Lone Star" Dietz was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. There are seven inductees this year, including three coaches. Dietz, who is being inducted posthumously, coached the Cowboys from 1924 through 1926. A very colorful individual who wore authentic Native American garb, Dietz inspired Boston Braves owner George Preston Marshall, whom Dietz was coaching for at the time, to rename the football team the Redskins. Marshall moved the franchise to Washington in 1937, and the organization retains the nickname to this day. Dietz played tackle at Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, PA. He actually coached in a Rose Bowl. An accomplished artist, he contributed sketches for the Walt Disney motion picture Bambi.
