SEC over 31 mill per school

The Southeastern Conference will distribute $436.8 million out of an NCAA-record $455.8 million in revenues between its 14 institutions, it was announced Friday.

Each league member will receive $31.2 million -- an increase of more than $10 million per school from last year's payout of $20.9 million per school.

 That is just conference distribution and not any other revenues (state money, donors, tickets, clothing, etc.).

If you take men's bball and football out, I'd bet that number would barely break 1 million per school.

Honestly, I'm rethinking this. I get that Athletic Departments as a whole have issues, but it doesn't change the fact that these kids are raking in billions for Universities. If an academic student discovers something patentable, then that student (and likely professor) receive up to 50% of the patent and subsequent royalties.

I don't know. I get the whole free ride thing, but no other students are treated like this. If any other student on a free ride or otherwise does something that brings in lots of money, they likely get a big chunk of it. Athletes don't.

I guess I'm just not sure how I feel about this anymore??

I do know this...the more those numbers go up, the more the non-P5 conferences/schools are becoming a new subdivision altogether. Not on any terms are we legitimately on par with those types of programs. Only a matter of time before a split comes. Enjoy these days in which UW can claim to be "Division I football" while you can.

Yep. I know everyone talks P5 expansion, but I wonder if the next step will be contraction along with a clear split?

I think those profits could be sustained or even increased (fewer teams to split between) if some of the P5 teams were dropped.

When I was on a walk yesterday I heard a song playin'. It was "Dixie", I kid ya not.

Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten.
Look away, look away, look away Dixie Land!

The South done rose up again, in football!

CFB has been changin' for years in a way that I don't like.

As I keep telling people...the SEC is the South's revenge for losing the Civil War.

A 9 year old girl was walking with me at that time. She knew she recognized the song somehow but I taught a bit of it to her. And then it was over.
Also, the weather up North lately is not very attractive to recruits. I would never play up there in 10 feet of snow or whatever it is they are getting now. I'd say more but I'd make Wyoming fans mad at me by talking about teams around the country.

Snow? Today was clear, and the most we've gotten before is a couple of drizzles for the last couple of weeks. No tornadoes, floods, or torrential downpours here.

Wyoming is not "the North". By "lately" I mean the winters the last couple of years or so. You gotta know what I mean.

The arms race is over.

Wyoming, and scores of schools just like us, have lost.

Yep, they may as well go ahead and formally split the Power 5 from the other conferences and let the pieces fall where they may. This amount of money is absolutely ludicrous.

ESPN is most to blame for this. Don't they run the SEC network? They control the bowls, the polls, and the conferences via TV contracts and every cable/satalite subscriber pays multiple hundreds of dollars to that single network alone every year (knowingly or otherwise). The only say we have is our dollars and they are compounding in a big way - cut the cord and let them implode.

To paraphrase a line from, probably one of the worst sci-fi movies of the '80s, Dune..."whoever controls ESPN controls college football"

Or better yet...Appease ESPN and the world's your oyster....hint, hint, Boise State.

espn/P5 also controls the ncaa. They have hated Wyoming since the power fail debacle in the night football game against Utah which was an abc/espn joint telecast (and probably before that).

That was a colossal disaster beyond anything I've seen regarding Wyoming football.

Mustn't hate us too much, they keep giving us games on TV every year, which the MW cuts us a fat check for.

It will be interesting to watch, but we are definitely out. If Bohl doesn't get us to the auto-slot before the next playoff contract expires, I don't think we will ever have a chance.

I wonder if it will move to 4 power 5 conferences + everyone else. I know byu is hoping for expansion (thought I don't think anyone would ever want them no matter what), but I wonder if we won't see a contraction where only 56 teams (14 teams x 4 conferences) are in the P5 (currently there are 65 + ND).

The 10 that drop are those like Stanford, Northwestern, etc. that hold academics in higher regard. Maybe they will be teams like Wazzu or??

When the last "split" happened, many of the Ivy League schools were among the tops in the country. They wouldn't sacrifice academics for what it took to chase TV.

It sucks; I like the current format better than where we are heading. I don't care if the P5 has more money; I like the opportunity to compete for the NY6 spot.

All MWC fans or even all G5 fans cutting the cord or boycotting would have 0 effect on ESPN or the system and that is why the system is what it is.

For the life of me, and not to derail the thread, but in a society that is banging the drum about income inequality all of that stuff, I can't figure out how it is okay for Universities to say: "You can't compete with us because you aren't rich enough, don't come from the right lineage, and you aren't popular enough".

Are you saying there's a group at ESPN collectively working to keep us down because of something that happened all those years ago?

ESPN cares about dollars. If Wyoming can make them dollars, we'll be on ESPN

I started reading what ragtime wrote and would you believe some the SMU fans think that a 6th power conference could become for the future. It would include BYU, Boise State and San Diego State. OK, maybe something like that happens.... I can't believe how many people dream of having BYU in their conference. One of the alcoholics told me to go home that I am drunk for not wanting something like BYU in the conference.
I would love to unload about that but it's not worth it.
Also, it doesn't seem like the Big 12 is popular for staying in a power playoff thing. And TCU and Baylor got left out. It seems easier to have 4 conferences to choose 4 or 8 playoff teams from.

There are some on the MWC board who post similar things. You have FresnoFanatic who is borderline tin foil hat wearer with his obsession, LoboBlast and his ridiculous obsession of State schools over "city state" (like Boise State or SDSU), and several Aztec Posters that still crave to be in C-USA 2.0. AKA, the AAC.
