1. It's actually only about a $1 million difference from Alvin Kamara's projected $3,868,505 contract as the first RB in the third round to Brian Hill's projected $2,625,505 contract as the first RB of the fifth round.
2. That's still roughly a 32% reduction.

Also, I thought there was a small benefit to being a 5th round over an early round pick at RB. If I am not mistaken, don't early round picks' contracts guarantee an extra team option year thus making the contract potentially longer? As a late round pick and if you perform well, you get into the 2nd contract quicker which is where the big money is.

Third reason is that 5th round contract is not guaranteed. NONE of it except the roughly $180,000 in signing bonus that's it. You have to be on the 53 man roster to get that contract.
