Raiders to LV?

The Rebels are also looking for a new football stadium, since they have played in Sam Boyd Stadium since 1971, and the Raiders could join them at a potential new home. Gutierrez passed along part of the memo from Jessup:

This could have significant positive effects for UNLV.

Like the article says, I'm not sure the NFL allows a team in Vegas.

I think the gambling concern is overblown.

$$$ still talks in LV...and I agree, the gambling concern is overblown, and so 1970.

IF, and it is a big IF, the NFL green-lighted the Raiders moving to LV, it would be absolutely monumental for UNLV football.

Sports gambling is legal in London, and Goodell has a hard-on to get a team there. There's no way the NFL can talk out of both sides of their mouth on this issue any more. They've shown their hand with London. They cannot use gambling as their "no to Vegas" play any longer.

So UNLV could play in an empty pro stadium in front of their 15k fans?

Yeah, I'm not sure how it would help UNLV, unless they got access to some better football facilities. From a market perspective they will have competition for football fans.

Imagine if in 1950, Wyoming thought, what the hell, we only average 8,000 fans per game...so why build a bigger stadium that would seat 20,000 - we don't need it.

If UNLV gets a close-to-campus (or on campus) NFL caliber stadium to play in, it will be a game changer...no doubt about it. To think otherwise is just being blindly jealous. Doesn't matter who plays there on Sunday...pretty sure if it were to happen, there would be a substantial increase in attendance (and fanbase).

I wonder if LV would give an NFL team the support it would need to survive in that market?

That's the real key. Historically, the answer would be a solid "NO". Way too much of a transient population.

How has it worked out for SDSU? I guess they averaged about 29,000 / game for a pretty good team with a good recent history.

This was my thinking. And like you mentioned, McPEachy, the transient population doesn't help. Plus I'd imagine that people would have to choose which program to support. Tickets are getting expensive nowadays

I thought about this as well, and then I realized that this is Vegas we're talking about. The visiting team could bring in just as many fans as the home team. I have zero desire to go to Oakland to watch my team (Packers) play a road game. But if they were playing in Vegas, hell yeah, sign me up. It's one of the few cities where the game would be just one of the reasons you go instead of the only reason.

Looks like the Nevada state legislature has approved a $750,000,000 room tax in Las Vegas that will pave the way for the construction of a domed stadium that seats approximately 65,000. The taxes will provide $750 million, the Raiders will pony up $500 million, and Sheldon Adelson will cover the balance of the costs - approximately $650 million (total projected cost is $1.9 billion). UNLV will share the stadium with the Raiders. The move from Oakland to Las Vegas has to be approved by the NFL and 24 of the 32 owners.

Leave the Raiders in Oakland!! I hope they stay for the community over there. I know both the Athletics and Raiders want a new stadium but I love the Coliseum. It's got a real nice, old school-ghetto stadium vibe that I dig. A funky 70's style concrete rock stadium and it gives me goosebumps when I approach it from the train. Haven't seen the Raiders play there yet but A's games are a blast (A's games are always super empty and when fans talk shit to the players it's like a direct conversation). Not sure if I'm ready to pony up 100 plus bucks to be around some crazy ass Raiders fans, but I bet that would be fun a experience. Maybe I'll go this year.

Sorry, Cosmic but.....It'll be the Las Vegas Raiders in about 2 years. Sounds better than Oakland Raiders or Los Angeles Raiders anyway.

Heard rumors a few months ago the A's might move but I doubt it since it's harder than crap to get MLB to let a owner move a team. Still surprised MLB allowed the Expos (Montreal) move to Washington, D.C.
