Pokes @ Zips Game Thread

I’m not sure what to make of what I just watched.

Kaden looked awfully inaccurate. I was very disappointed by his performance. He has to be a lot better if we are going to win more games than we did last year.

Outside of Durr, our receiving corp underwhelmed again. Dropped balls, poor body positioning, lack of awareness from that group as a whole.

Sam Scott needs to see the bulk of carries at RB. Was not impressed by the other guys.

Defense looked great, but that Akron offense was pretty anemic. Their QB was not good at all. We were also very lucky their best player went down with an injury.
Holman was good too. Bentley needed to shield the defender better on that deep pass which was broken up. Yeah, kaden seemed rushed a lot when he didn’t need to

Ugly W but a win is a win. There were some positives (Durr, Scott, defense). Oline and quarterback play could be a lot better. Some questionable coaching decisions. Let’s see what they do next week.

Not exactly an inspiring win. I don’t know what to make of it.

Kaden was 19/36 for 260 yards. Area for improvement? Sure. But there's been plenty of years where we would have had a parade for that kind of passing performance.

The Pokes are coming off a 3-9 season and just went on the road and beat another bad team. I'm not saying we're winning the conference - but we're acting like we eeked out a win over an FCS team at home.

Wyoming was unquestionably the best team on the field tonight, even if the score doesn't show it.

I need to re watch, (watched 4th Q …. Coaching football, Thursday at 5:00 might be the worst time for a game in my lifetime) but we looked a lot better. Dominated statistically. Kaden did look not very good though. Either underthrew or overthrew everything. Didn’t lead Sargent? on what should have been a huge gain. Kaden needs to be better and I think he will!

That’s a completion percentage just barely over 50%. Close to 100 of those yards came off of two plays - the deep ball that was underthrown and gets broken up by a better DB and the Durr TD which was all YAC by Durr.

Kaden also missed the read on the 4th down inside their 10 yard line when Scott got stoned and we turned the ball over. If he pulls that ball, he walks into the end zone untouched. I know he isn’t a running QB, but he has to pull the ball there.

Nobody is going to convince me Kaden had a good game tonight. He had a mediocre game at best.

Given the past few years, I will take mediocre qb play.

I was my usual surly self most of the game being irritated that this program continues to struggle in the point scoring category. When we got the late TD then I was comfortable feeling the win was possible.

It was a dominant performance statistically but we made sure to feed Akron multiple opportunities.

There was a good representation of Wyoming fans present. The Akron fans are generally unemotional and understandably so with the continued losing.

Parked for free across the street from the stadium and all east side tickets were $19 general admission so we sat on the upper deck 50 yard line. Not a bad little stadium.

There is some potential on this team and a good test for this staff will be to enhance the ability to score. If this team is going to be competitive for bowl eligibility they better be dominant next week in the home opener not just in total offense but on the scoreboard as well.

I was happy to attend the game in person and walk out of the stadium with the W.

36 pass attempts, and going downfield. Nice to see them open up the field a little more, even when the results weren’t there. Clean up some of the rushed throws and increase the completion % and the offense will be moving more regularly

I'm pretty conviced that Kaden's struggles last night were due to the fact that he wasn't getting enough time to set his feet. O-line (especially the left side) played like absolute dog shit. That being said, here's some good stuff!
  • Sam Scott - What a game for Sam. Looks like the coaching staff finally recognized that he's the best answer at RB. Also, dude spent a lot of time in the weight room this offseason. He's HUGE.
  • Brayden Johnson - This is exactly the type of dude we were missing last season. Jenkins was EVERYWHERE on defense. It didn't matter where the play went, he was around it. Just an unreal nose for the ball.
  • The DTs - The interior D line had a rough first half, but they came back with a vengeance in the 2nd half. Those are 4 giant human beings, and they move faster than anyone that size should be able to move.
  • The CBs - I couldn't tell you who was playing corner most of the game, which is exactly how it should be. They were locking down receivers in a big way!

I also liked the secondary play a lot. Not sure who it was, but in garbage time their WR made a catch on the sidelines and our DB drilled him and dislodged the ball. Had the thought about how rare this was for UW and how little physicality our DBs have played with recently.

That was Justin Taylor flying in. They used him on some blitz packages also

I assume you are talking about Brayden Johnson, our weakside linebacker.

I agree that he was fantastic. That weakside LB spot is responsible for cleaning up a lot. They have to have good eyes and be able to read a play, flow, and then make a one on one tackle. He did all of those things pretty damn well. He has good speed for his size, but I think he might struggle a little more when we face teams with faster skill position players. We may see more of Gary Rutherford against those teams.

I'm in hold on the secondary. I must have watched a different game but as many solid plays I saw a lot of plays where it was fortunate that Akron couldn't throw or catch.

I didn't see every play but Anderson looked really inaccurate when he was forced to roll left. This worries me because the left side of the line looks like 1 on 1 can contain that side for the opposing d. That means bring pressure on the o's right and force things left is probably the scouting report.

D, including secondary, did have a good statistical game, pitched a shutout, but we'll know more after cu and Utah. Good first out though.

Honestly, Bohl ball probably wins this 17 or 24 to 0. The run game looked really good at times. In Bohl's last year, we averaged about 7.2 yards/attempt and threw about 24 passes/game. 7.2 yards per attempt on 36 attempts is about 259 yards (which is close to Anderson this game). What's interesting is that Bohl averaged 36 rushes for 4.4vy/a (39 rushes for 4.3 y/a this game). Against Akron, there was 75 possessions vs 59 for Bohl's average in the last year. The time of possession was 33 for this game which is more or in line with Bohl's.

This year's squad is running a faster tempo, was able to sustain drives to get the TOP up there but just couldn't convert when it counted. If the critical conversions and passing percentage increase, this O could be pretty decent. The flip side is that if the tempo stays, passing completion stays, and we run into a better D which shortens drives, it might be a long day.

Andrew Johnson saved our bacon several times in the first half in particular. Very happy for that young man. Wyoming kid that paid his dues.

Our OL needs a lot of work. They have the talent and size...but Tripodi's squads have underwhelmed for a while.
