Overconfidence??

Talk about in depth coverage haha. First off it's 7220. Secondly, Mile High hasn't been invesco for years.

I think any team prepping for their opener in Laradise would say the same thing.

To be fair, most teams are going to feel confident against the Pokes until we punch one of them in the mouth...

To me this game is huge. Gosh, it could really set the tone for where the team is at.

Football season is here! I love it.

Hell, most Wyoming fans are overconfident we're going to get smoked and there is nothing (elevation, scheme, act of God) to stop it. You would think this NIU team was Alabama...

Guilty.

Until proven otherwise, this (below) looks like a team that should be confident to kick our asses. Especially considering we have 6 wins in 2 years under a new coach who tore it down to the bottom to "build it the right way", and quite honestly, owns 2 of the worst losses in the modern-day history of the program.

Northern Illinois:

2015 8-6 Poinsettia Bowl

2014 11-3 Boca Raton Bowl

2013 12-2 Poinsettia Bowl

2012 12-2 Orange Bowl

2011 11-3 GoDaddy.com Bowl

2010 11-3 Humanitarian Bowl

The last time Wyoming won more than 10 games (1996), the last time in a major NYD bowl game (1976), even the last bowl game (2011 drubbing by powerhouse Temple).

Don't give me shit about not being a "real fan" because I tell it like it is. I love Wyoming, everything about it, and especially Wyoming athletics. But a spade is a spade...and while some may disagree with me (which is part of a message board), Wyoming has done very little to rise above, bring the wood, war daddy, cowboy tough, pride / excellence / tradition our way out of the GD cellar, in a watered down shit conference.

I am NOT implying anyone is a real fan or isnt. But is becoming abundantly clear that I am in the minority that believes Saturday is going to go a lot differently than most. I think this game is going to be much closer than the Pokes are being given credit for and I think we will win.

And you are right, we have had a ton failure over the past few season but NIU used to suck as well but there was a point where the switch flipped, and it started to change. There is no reason this game, this season, can't be the switch. If I am wrong I will eat all the crow you can serve.

And the reverse is true as well! I will happily stuff my face with crow (that you can hand me on a silver platter), but know - that I will gladly eat it - with a huge smile on my face! Go Pokes!!!

Well hell. After last season I said that's it, I don't care if I'm blind I will not wear brown and gold goggles again. Dammit, I can't help myself. The offense is good, if not studly, and the defense is, well, the defense...pokes win, by 4...

Don't forget they got their asses kicked in about every bowl game. Last bowl win was 2011 against Arkansas st. They've been feeding off of the three Directional Michigan teams forever. That conference isn't great and I know EMU beat us last year. Yeah we were bad. But I think their record is a bit inflated. There's no doubt they are a good program but it's not like they're even in the same hemisphere as Boise. It will be shameful to get blown out. We should hang with them. Maybe we don't win but 10 pts sounds about right.

I always start each season out with an optimistic outlook, but also prepare myself for what has recently been the inevitable crashing back to earth with a devastating loss in the first few games. I think it's a bit humorous to pound our chests and mock the "overconfidence" of our opponents, when in fact, most of them are able to pencil a W next to our name on the schedule. The only way to get respect is to earn it on the field with wins, and not lose to teams like North Dakota and EMU. I sincerely hope Bohl improves on last year's debacle. If not, his coaching seat will warm considerably.

NIU will score points on our defense. This game basically comes down to whether or not we can score enough points to keep up with them.

I think we will be able to score some points but will it be enough is the question? We will find out Saturday evening.

Did y'all listen to the press conference yet?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1xQ2qVRP-4

I think it really comes down to if you trust Bohl. You can't watch that press conference and suggest he is answering questions the same as the first two years. He is a much more confident coach. He believes his team is better. I know it's so hard to believe after the dry spell we have been through over the years, but he is a much more confident coach then seasons past. Now, I still encourage each of you to progress cautiously with your emotions. It's like when you take the 'totally outta your league' hot chick out on a first date. be real...she will probably realize it soon enough. don't let your heart get too close or you will end up crying in the gutter in your own puke (oh wait...that's a different memory). anyway...i digress....the fact is that Bohl is a much more confident coach and to me it seems like he is doing all he can to keep his enthusiasm in check. "The calvary is coming".

Just an unfortunate set of circumstances. Being very young and very inexperienced to start the year and maybe not taking the opponent seriously enough. The team improved quite a bit from beginning to end. Injuries kept it from being better than a 2 win season.

UNI comes in with a strong pedigree....but this is a game Wyoming can win. Just need to see continued improvement from last year.

I think the team will definitely be better this year, but still see some gaps keeping this team from taking a big jump.
1. Starting a true freshman at guard, moving Roullier to Center. Starting a RS Freshman should be rare, never mind a true one...this move is plugging a whole. Rush may be great in the future, but this is not good.
2. As others have mentioned DL aren't a strength, hope I'm proven wrong... We seem very susceptible to the run again.
3. I get the sense that Prosser has the best DE ability, but is 25 lbs too light right now.

So better, but still young at many positions, with a couple gaps. Thinking 6-6 would be best case. Next year could be great.

Bohl also tempered his words during the conference. Still some big challenges during the game. I believe he thinks we'll be pretty competitive

Since people are so obsessed with weight/strength around here, Gavin Rush is one case where that isn't a problem. He already comes in at over 300 lbs....only four linemen on the two-deep are heavier and three of them are starting.

That's the glory of today being the final day of August. Soon everyone's talk (optimism or pessimism) will be worthless and the games will be played. There is a great opportunity for UW on Saturday to squash negativity right off the bat. A win vs. NIU would be a great step forward to a potential surprise bowl season.

This is still a young team. I won't be shocked by anything from 3-7 wins. IMO, only 0-2 wins warrants Fire Bohl talk this fall. 2017 will be the "get it done or get going" season.

But for the time being, this is the way it is. Make no mistake about it: MW peers view UW as a conference doormat. When they see "Wyoming" on the schedule, they see a fairly painless victory. Nothing will change that until Wyoming proves them otherwise.

My concern on this point isn't his size...just not a position you want a true freshman in. Also shows a huge lack of depth. Having him next to and learning from Roullier should help a lot.
