OT: Idaho/New Mexico State get the ax

It is going to be a tough road to hoe for both programs unless they can find a landing spot. Idaho's only realistic FBS option would be MWC and that isn't going to happen.

NMSU would be a geographic fit for CUSA, but I don't think that will happen either.

Other than Independence, I don't know what their FBS options are. I feel for them and hope WYO is never in a similar situation.

Doesn't mean I like it, but wouldn't be shocked to see one or both in the Mountain West.

I know everyone thinks the Mountain West is way better than them, but sometimes, these moves happen for more reasons than just on-field/on-court ability.

The sad thing is that if the P5 really does split, then none of this conference realignment stuff matters to anyone outside of the P5. The P5 will absorb all of the wealth and whatever division we are in will have financials similar to FCS.

MW politics 101: there isn't a chance in hell Boise State allows Idaho into the MW. This was attempted in 2012 and and the MW gave a stern no.

And NMSU? No. Nothing REALLY against them, but UTEP would be the overall better option in such a scenario.

My slightly-educated guess for both schools....

Idaho will accept the standing football invitation to go back to the Big Sky. It'll be the first time a I-A (FBS) school dropped down a level but they really have no other choices.

NMSU will probably end up in C-USA partly to even up the football membership once UAB rejoins for football in 2017.

NMSU to the Southland Conference?

Probably won't happen due to the fact the SLC is I-AA (FCS). Can't see both schools dropping down a level.

Because for Idaho it might be more expensive to stay in FBS than the loss of money they would see in a drop to FCS. However, for NMSU, it would cost them more money to drop than it would cost to still operate in FBS in either C-USA or as an independent. This is mainly due to the geographic isolation of Idaho as compared to NMSU. I realize Las Cruces isn't exactly a huge metro area, but it is only 50 miles to el paso and a lot closer to a lot of other FBS schools than Moscow is.

What he said, Mr. T. :)

Reading an NMSU board, it sounds like they're pretty confident they can go independent until 2020 financially if bad comes to worst. Sounds like dropping down is not being considered at this time. NMSU has decent facilities and good recruiting beds in west texas and AZ, not sure how they've been so bad for so long.. I always thought there was potential there but nobody has been able to harness it.

A winning NMSU program would have great attendance. I was in Las Cruces for a conference and there were 2 high school teams playing at the Aggies' stadium. The place was sold out. Like us, they can't overcome that losing hurdle for whatever reason, but if they did, I think they would have good support. I've always thought that if things did blow up for the G5, a core of the following teams wouldn't be terrible (note: I do not prefer this to the current MWC; this is only if the P5 split and all revenue in the G5 is gone anyway):

WYO
CSU
AF
UNM
NMSU
UTEP

Las Cruces High School Vs Las Cruces Mayfield... it's a big deal, I went to that game when I was there and they had 33K in attendance. There's actually some decent high school talent in NM but like WYO they often go out of state.
