Whats funniest to me, through this whole thing, is how some of us get roasted for having the nerve to talk ill of Coach Shyatt yet its fair game when it comes to talking shit about Burman. One UW affiliate is fair game over the internet but not another. Haha what a joke. Hypocrisy in its definition.
For the record, I love Coach Shyatt. I run hot and am speak first, analyze later. I hate losing. I hate losing when its a situation where we could have won. I hate getting lambasted by teams that are worse than us. I am who I am. If this isnt the place to vent and talk (good or bad) about the Pokes I may just head on down the dusty trail some where else.
Coach Shyatt is a good man and I think a terrific ambassador for the program.
That said, he's not beyond reproach, second guessing, or even outright criticism from time to time.
Personally I thought his comment the other night after the game on the radio was something better left unsaid. It was an inspiring victory, it rejuvenated the fan base (and hopefully the team), and the onus should have been about all of that - not whining about how the fan base doesn't appreciate the efforts of the team.
What do we all want from Coach Bohl? A MWC championship. What do we want from Coach Shyatt? The same exact thing and a trip to the Big Dance.
I for one have zero interest in another CBI invite. I still hope we can get to the Big Dance this season - but I also believe that an NIT trip would be a measurable sign of a program that is on the rise.
I think the NIT is under-shooting. Sure the 3 CBIs suck, but had Luke Martinez not got suspended, and Nance not torn his ACL, we would be sitting on potential back to back NCAA Tourney bids.
For instance, this is our first year with a winning record in the MWC in a while. Yet last season we went .500 in MWC play, and finished the season something like 1-6.
There was a poll taken on ESPN or CBS Sports about which team in the MWC outside of SDSU is the most dangerous team and Wyo won in a landslide. We had all sorts of momentum before the Nance ACL injury.
So we go 9-9 in MWC play last season when at one point we were 8-3?
We lost to AFA at home, and we absolutely should not have, along with being up 15-0 on Boise and still losing (at home!).
Now, with those two games alone taken into consideration, let's change those from L's to W's, we go from 9-9 to 11-7 AND finish 3rd OUTRIGHT in the MWC even without Nance.
Had Nance not gotten hurt? We might have fished something like 5-1 instead of 1-5. We were absolutely an NCAA Tourney team last season before the ACL.
Let's go back 1 more season.
13-0 and ranked 25th. Sure, it was an incredibly weak OOC schedule, much like CSU's OOC this year.
Luke Martinez and Leonard Washington were looking like GREAT MWC players as they were in the middle of their senior year and 2nd year with Shyatt. We were cruising.
Boise upset us on a buzzer beater with a "injured" Luke (we didn't know he had a felony arrest coming his way in about 72 hours). We have Luke, we win that game. Luke gets arrested the team falls apart. We were well on our way to at least the NIT, if not setting ourselves up for a good MW run and making the Dance.
The MWC sent 5 of 9 teams to the tourney that season. One of them was Boise. We were easily one of the best 5 teams in the conference that season.
Now, with all that said, a potential NIT or Big Dance, followed by a SURE THING Big Dance last year is where our team has been in terms of talent.
We didn't have the luck, we had the bad luck. Whatever reason, we had the talent.
So with that in mind, going from 2 potential Big Dance's to an NIT Larry Nance, Derek Cooke, Charles Hankerson, and Riley Grabau would be a fuckin travesty.
This group of seniors should be working on a 3rd tourney in a row, at least a second tourney in 2 years. We are above the NIT.
They are above the NIT.
This group of seniors has put in the work to get to the Big Dance.
