Larry Shyatt's post game comment

I admit, I haven't been to a game in Laramie this year. Every trip to Laramie is $500. Doesn't make me less of a fan. I haven't missed a game this year that I could have watched.

Yeah I'm pretty sure someone criticized me for not being at Wyoming games this fall. I don't get it.

I don't even remember what or who said what. No worries. I love this board. I think the fans on here are real fans. I have no problem with both extremes. I can be pissed at Hankerson one day and love him the next. I am sure he knows this comes with playing D1 ball.

At the end of the day, our passion for UW sports is really the same. Different levels of expectations maybe, but we all do love the team. That is why I will likely be in Vegas next month and Laramie a few times in the fall.

+1

And if anyone wants to get me down to Vegas for the MWC-Tourney, you have a place to stay in Corvallis while the Pokes are in the Portland NCAA Tourney

I was struck by a comment that Larry Shyatt made following last night's glorious come-back win at Nevada.

Following the game while being interviewed by Dave & Kevin, Shyatt, when talking about how special a group this year's team is said: "I keep telling people about this group...and if they can't see it yet they're missing something special. If they can't see it by now I don't know what to tell them...maybe I'll go and buy them Kentucky season tickets."

I found this a bit odd considering the euphoria surrounding last night's great win.

I'm probably alone on this one...or am I?

Sorry I'm chiming in late on this one, but when I read that, I don't know that he is necessarily referring to any person on this board. The fact that we even take time to comment on here means that we see something special in this team. I think he could be referring to perhaps those people in the state that are just so used to a bad program that they think we could just be a fluke. But even more, I think he is also referring to those people(like on the selection committee) who keep saying we don't deserve to be in the Big Dance this year. Either way, I think we are taking this personally. Coaches say this type of stuff even if they aren't receiving any criticism.

Whats funniest to me, through this whole thing, is how some of us get roasted for having the nerve to talk ill of Coach Shyatt yet its fair game when it comes to talking shit about Burman. One UW affiliate is fair game over the internet but not another. Haha what a joke. Hypocrisy in its definition.

For the record, I love Coach Shyatt. I run hot and am speak first, analyze later. I hate losing. I hate losing when its a situation where we could have won. I hate getting lambasted by teams that are worse than us. I am who I am. If this isnt the place to vent and talk (good or bad) about the Pokes I may just head on down the dusty trail some where else.

Coach Shyatt is a good man and I think a terrific ambassador for the program.

That said, he's not beyond reproach, second guessing, or even outright criticism from time to time.

Personally I thought his comment the other night after the game on the radio was something better left unsaid. It was an inspiring victory, it rejuvenated the fan base (and hopefully the team), and the onus should have been about all of that - not whining about how the fan base doesn't appreciate the efforts of the team.

What do we all want from Coach Bohl? A MWC championship. What do we want from Coach Shyatt? The same exact thing and a trip to the Big Dance.

I for one have zero interest in another CBI invite. I still hope we can get to the Big Dance this season - but I also believe that an NIT trip would be a measurable sign of a program that is on the rise.

I think the NIT is under-shooting. Sure the 3 CBIs suck, but had Luke Martinez not got suspended, and Nance not torn his ACL, we would be sitting on potential back to back NCAA Tourney bids.

For instance, this is our first year with a winning record in the MWC in a while. Yet last season we went .500 in MWC play, and finished the season something like 1-6.
There was a poll taken on ESPN or CBS Sports about which team in the MWC outside of SDSU is the most dangerous team and Wyo won in a landslide. We had all sorts of momentum before the Nance ACL injury.

So we go 9-9 in MWC play last season when at one point we were 8-3?
We lost to AFA at home, and we absolutely should not have, along with being up 15-0 on Boise and still losing (at home!).

Now, with those two games alone taken into consideration, let's change those from L's to W's, we go from 9-9 to 11-7 AND finish 3rd OUTRIGHT in the MWC even without Nance.

Had Nance not gotten hurt? We might have fished something like 5-1 instead of 1-5. We were absolutely an NCAA Tourney team last season before the ACL.

Let's go back 1 more season.
13-0 and ranked 25th. Sure, it was an incredibly weak OOC schedule, much like CSU's OOC this year.
Luke Martinez and Leonard Washington were looking like GREAT MWC players as they were in the middle of their senior year and 2nd year with Shyatt. We were cruising.

Boise upset us on a buzzer beater with a "injured" Luke (we didn't know he had a felony arrest coming his way in about 72 hours). We have Luke, we win that game. Luke gets arrested the team falls apart. We were well on our way to at least the NIT, if not setting ourselves up for a good MW run and making the Dance.

The MWC sent 5 of 9 teams to the tourney that season. One of them was Boise. We were easily one of the best 5 teams in the conference that season.

Now, with all that said, a potential NIT or Big Dance, followed by a SURE THING Big Dance last year is where our team has been in terms of talent.
We didn't have the luck, we had the bad luck. Whatever reason, we had the talent.

So with that in mind, going from 2 potential Big Dance's to an NIT Larry Nance, Derek Cooke, Charles Hankerson, and Riley Grabau would be a fuckin travesty.

This group of seniors should be working on a 3rd tourney in a row, at least a second tourney in 2 years. We are above the NIT.

They are above the NIT.

This group of seniors has put in the work to get to the Big Dance.

I re-listened to his comments again after reading the thread and I'm still convinced you can even hear a smile through his tone of voice on the Kentucky comment and he was trying to make a joke.

I also think the comments about band-wagoners was directed outside of the fan base. More towards committee selection members and media. People that talk bout how good Wyoming is and then a week later talk about how bad they are.

Now don't get me wrong I could see how someone might think it was aimed at the UW fan base but I think this thread was built off misconception of a comment and taking as criticism when it was a lighthearted joke at the end of an interview and a jab at media members not being able to decide how they feel about Wyoming.

I don't know that he is necessarily referring to any person on this board.

That's the thing about where this thread started. It's like some aren't even reading what Shyatt said.

He is, jokingly, referring to people who he has talked to and who are still not excited about the team.

First, no one like that exists -- it's a rhetorical device, ya know? -- as you'd have to imagine some guy sitting there crossing his arms as Shyatt gives one of his great speeches and saying, "Nope. No. Not me. Still not excited."

Second, by definition he can't be referring to Wyoming basketball fans. They're already on board.

I'd hate to see the size of the chip on the guy's shoulder who takes even tiny offense at Shyatt's remark.

No kidding.

Heck, even as someone who's never been to Laramie, I can't wait until I can get out there for a game. Though I'm afraid that if I move out there I'll never want to leave!
