Larry Shyatt's post game comment

tweaked said:
I love Coach Shy ... but I think he needs to ignore the twitter feeds (perhaps relayed to him via his son) and lay off the Wyoming fans a bit. It has been a long dry spell but the fans are beginning to show up. We had close to 8000 against a team that hadn't defeated a D1 team and on the heels of two nasty, nasty losses without Nance. For most of us close to the program, there is much love and appreciation for the character of the young men making up this team.

So Larry doesn't have the right to respond to people "anonomously" insulting him or his kids? That's b.s. If you come after me and my family, I have the right to defend myself.

He's got every right to call out the fans. At the start of this season we were averaging about 5000 fans for a team that had 20 win seasons in back to back years and only had those seasons derailed by the loss of our best player.

If what he says is bothering you it's probably because you're one of the people that needs to be bothered by it:

1. One of the people whining on twitter.
2. One of the people that rarely goes to games....

Etc.

I like what he's saying. It's getting the fan base to realize that they are equally responsible for supporting this team: either through positive encouragement or putting their ass in an empty basketball seat.
You apparently can't read...

I can read just fine, good enough to see threads on top of threads with negative crap about a team that's 21-6 and leaves their heart on the court every night for brown and gold.

It's one thing to bitch about Schroyer's mess. It's another to bitch about Larry Shyatt and the guys on this team. If you haven't noticed the difference between the two, I'm not going to explain it to you.

Maybe you should listen to your mother: if you don't have anything nice to say, shut the fuck up.
Haha ok. I guess I didn't realize that criticizing the worst two game stretch I have ever seen from a cowboy team means I can't tell the difference between now and 5 years ago. Right. Frankly what we saw those two games was far worse than anything we saw under Schroyer. Get off your soap box. We're one bad loss away from a 3rd straight CBI invite. Shyatt wants the benefit of the doubt? Get us to a tournament that matters, and there's only one

Larry Shyatt's post game comments bother people because he holds the spotlight on the people that are calling out his team. I think there's honor in that. He does it because he doesn't like to hear people insulting his players.

I agree with it. If you don't want your negativity spotlighted for all to see, than don't post it on a permanent message board where anyone can read it. Share it with your old grumpy neighbor that doesn't want kids to walk on his lawn.

You're obviously know more than Shyatt does about basketball. All you have to do is look back at the AFA game thread and read how Larry Shyatt doesn't run an "actual offense". If you want to be a message board expert, be man enough to stand up and take the kick back when you sling insults at his kids.
So the only way to be a true fan is to blindly accept the results on the field/court and never voice your opinion of them? Isn't that the point of websites like this... For fans to voice their concerns? If I have the gall to comment on a game I'm an Internet warrior? Are you serious right now? During the Air Force game was there one single thing to praise? And don't act like those of us critical of shyatt and the Cowboys aren't the fist to drink the coolaid and rabidly pump sunshine. We're high on this team when they play good. When they don't were not. I was under the impression that was. Wing a fan... Is there a fan on here who liked the way we played agains AF SDSU?

No, but when you get fired up you say things like, "Just imagine if we ran an actual offense". You can't take that back. You could edit it, but if someone quoted you, it's there forever.

You're telling a coach with 40 years of experience that he doesn't run an "actual offense". It's damn offensive. You wouldn't say that to his face. You're pussy enough to drop it on a message board where you can cowardly slink back into the shadows without anyone knowing who you are.

Conversation/social skills should apply to the message board. Either learn how to talk to people on the boards like you do in real life, or don't be offended when someone holds the spotlight to your cowardly worm droppings. You earned that.

It's not just you. Look down the page. People are calling out Hankerson's desire to play, when he's paying his own way, and works his ass off defensively every night.

Shyatt has every right to defend himself. If it bothers you, stop being an anonymous coward and say it to his face, where he has a chance to defend himself. Either that, or learn how to talk on the message boards with the same skills you use in everyday life.

Jeremy is that you?

You're damn right I get fired up when the Cowboys stink it up two games in a row and then the next game the first word out of the coaches mouth is bad mouthing the fans he's been begging to come support him. That's fucking offensive. He begs and pleads for fans to come watch and support him and his team and then turns on us when we say anything other than praise. There's something off putting about that. And I'm not suddenly reeling trying to take it back. I have never wavered in my opinion of this offense. I have publicly voiced my opinion the only way I know how and that is on the call in show. I don't have a press pass or I would ask shyatt what's up with the stagnation at times. Why we throw the ball around for 30 seconds just to throw up some prayer. What has shyatt said to any of us in person? He's just a radio warrior and can't say it to our face. See how I can do it too?

To attack me on posts from the heat of the moment is weird, I suppose, but I guess I can concede you're right. It IS an offense. Maybe I should have been more descriptive. It's an antiquated, boring, and predictable offense. But it is an offense.

If it bothers him, you, the pope, etc. to hear anything other than praise maybe it's best to stay away form forums.

Agree whole heartedly. We pay his salary. If were not stoked with being blown out by Air Force and embarrassed by SDSU that's our right. Focus more on th court and less about us off the court. I have always hated when he says shit like this
You do not pay his salary.
The athletic budget comes from subsidies and internal fund raising. I pay taxes which the state then funnels into a subsidy to the university athletic department so I have that part covered and I am football and basketball season ticket holder. Last time I checked, season ticket sales and donations are both internal fund raising efforts by the university. Remind me again how fans don't pay his salary?

If you are in Wyoming you pay a sales tax that goes to the State of Wyoming. If you are not a resident and you are traveling through Wyoming - you pay that same tax - regardless of who you are a fan of.

Wyoming Athletics is complicated. The University as a whole gets a bit over 50% of their money from the State of Wyoming.

Athletics is closer to being self contained. Unfortunately, in this day and age, that isn't quite enough.

You might have a point that fans pay his salary. However, the wealthy fans pay his salary.

Maybe you should start to pony up the big bucks?

I'm not the one that's arguing that the head coach doesn't have the right to respond to people that are insulting him and his players. You are.

If we were having this same conversation in real life, my voice would be elevated and both of us would probably be on the verge of knocking the other guy out.

Yet, on the message board you can sling as many insults as you want. On twitter you can drop garbage insults for him and his player to read that neither of them can respond to without making the front page of every newspaper in Wyoming.

If you don't want to be spotlighted for negativity and insulting comments then don't be negative and insult people without giving them a chance to defend themselves.

Just tell me this, if you had a conversation with Shyatt at a restaurant in Laramie would you tell him, "Just imagine how good this team would be if you ran an actual offense."

You don't have to answer that. I already know the answer. Now crawl back into your wormhole and hope the spotlight doesn't shine AGAIN on you and your cowardly insults.

I don't have a twitter account, so I have no idea what you say on twitter.

You drew first blood, Shyatt didn't. He didn't come to your job and leave a note that says, "ItsuckstobeaCSUram takes five breaks a day, steals from peoples lunch bags, and doesn't have any idea how to do half of the things that he's assigned to do"........From the anonymous "Itsuckstobeamessageboardcoward". Imagine if that's happening thousands of time at your job, after every bad performance or less than average day you have at work. Imagine that you NEVER have the chance to defend yourself from your accusers.

I'm not criticising you on the internet because I want to. I'm criticising you because I'm defending Shyatt's right to defend himself and his players. If I read your posts and met you at a game, I would tell you it's pussy to insult our basketball team anonymously. I would speak all of the same words to you that I'm typing right now.

Your comment is not the only one and it certainly isn't the worst. Public figures get flooded with 1000's of anonymous insults. It's part of the job. Just don't try and tell everyone that the other part of the job, is to sit their and be spoon fed insults without the right to defend yourself. That's NOT part of the job.

Once you give money to a person or organization, it is no longer your money.

You use a dollar bill to buy something, which someone else uses to buy a lottery ticket. They won. However, you do not have a right to the lottery earnings because the money used to pay for that ticket is no longer yours.

So taxpayer funded doesn't mean me, and Suckstobearam, and the other half million tax payers payed for it? Then who did exactly? Sure, not all of it is from the state, but some of it certainly is. Plus, I know a lot of people on here (not this poor college kid) make CJC donations, which add to it on the other side of that. So who is paying his salary?

I enjoy his comments criticizing fans for not filling up seats. this team deserves a sell out and unfortunately I don't think they're gonna get one, shame on us.
I have nothing to be ashamed of. Through migraines and blizzards I haven't missed a home game

So, then quit taking everything personal. Obviously you might not be someone he's talking about.
Unless it's negative comments online that he refers to.

Wow! I must agree with Cowboyjunky. I didn't even read through this whole mess before I commented on this comment.

Go POKES!!! I'll cheer you all on without bitching.

Boy, a lot of sensitivity on this board.

An offhand comment like Shyatt's is just one of the categories of sportspeak. I think you'd classify it as a subset of the Harbaugh Protocol.

The Harbaugh Protocol is named after Jim Harbaugh, way back when he quarterbacked Michigan. It went like this: Michigan would be favored by, like, 9 points. They'd win the game....by 3 points, 10 points, 17 points, didn't really matter. With the microphone in his face in the flush of victory, Harbaugh always gave some version of this: "I'm so proud of the team. We're fighters. We just kept fighting. No one thought we could do this! Nobody thought we had a chance! But we ignored them! That's what we do."

Scientists think that sports guys say these things to encourage an us-against-them, circle the wagons mentality. (All of this is discussed at length in the literature discussing the "We Are the Beleaguered Underdog Syndrome.")

I see zero logic in pitting the fans against the team. None. Us vs Them doesn't apply here.

I get what he's trying to get at and I love his passion, he's gotta remember Wyoming is a big state and fans come from all over the state. Wednesday night for the CSU games isn't the best way to schedule a big game like that. Unlike being in Florida where there's more people in a 50 mile radius in Gainesville than 1/2 the pop of Wyoming as a whole. We are all getting there the best we can, the new config of the AA is eye appealing but isn't fan friendly for those walk ups wanting to attend a game. Sitting the rafters isn't an idea of a good time for a lot of people.

Anyway I get what he's saying but he has to remember where we were, how bad of shape we were in and as long as this isn't a one and done season for building this program to where we go backwards instead of forwards.

True fans will always be there, the one solution always and will be if a game is on TV black it out in a 50 mile radius from Laramie and more fans will fill the seats and what he's desiring.

Keep up the good work Pokes and Papa Shy, we're all there with you, I'd rather be 21-6 and 10-4 in 2nd place at this time of the season than years past where we barely squeaked by to win 10 games a year.....bitching, moaning and complaining just means you want your good team to just be even better and better, there is no such thing as a perfect game in any sport

Coach Shyatt should realize that he is above this type of behavior. He does not need to engage the few negative posters/twitter accounts or whatever. Never going to make everyone happy but you certainly can turn off fans by always generalizing the UW fans based upon some stupid tweet or post. Don't lump everyone together as Shyatt seems to do when he is upset. Thick skin is part of the job description for any and every coach in America.

So if we don't give our dollar, who pays for it? This is an asinine statement.

It's sportsspeak.

It's an entertainment industry with certain cliches and conventions.

Don't read so much into it.

As I posted yesterday - and now that we have a new thread on the same topic:

"Let fans be fanatical, players play, and coaches coach. It is what makes the athletics world go round. Without fans, you have no athletics by the way...they are the engine that drives the train.

This generation of twitter / facebook / insta-whatever is a damn embarrassment at times though."

Oh, and as far as attendance, let's get off this shit can we? #21 West Vaginia beat #8 Kansas on Monday (in WV), with the entire upper deck empty - and an announced attendance (PAID) of just over 7,000. Attendance, as we have discussed here many, many times, is a national issue - not a Wyoming issue.

I've agreed with Shyatt all year, but his timing on this one was a little off. Fans, for the first time in many years have turned a corner. 8,000 showed up to a late-afternoon game on Valentine's Day to see a Wyoming team without their best player, after two complete ass kickings, play against the worst team in the country. If there isn't more evidence that fans are finally showing up to watch Wyoming play again, as opposed to showing up because of the opponent, then I don't know what it is.

Unfortunately the last two games are mid-week games, but if the weather is pretty nice, I bet we get 9,000-10,000+ for each game. The Utah State game could have a very large crowd if we win the next couple. It's not on TV, it's senior night, and it could have championship implications.
